I don't remember that happening. I'm not that old, and you probably are not either. I've never heard that was the custom. And I would imagine the more pious Methodists who had circuit riders would have been opposed to such a practice and would have insisted on waiting for the preacher to come to town.
The preachers may have been pious but the people were cowboys, prospectors, gamblers and saloon girls etc. The preachers didn't deny them the right to get married or withhold the gospel from them in spite of their racial or professional background. Many turned to Christ as a result. These were places that might not have a preacher for many months at a time like Las Vegas over 100 years ago.
