When a believer falls away from the faith it is not because of personal sins of the flesh, but rather because of a system of evil that has progressively diluted and deceived that believer through some form of doctrine and/or sublimation that is associated with affections and attractions associated with love for this present world and the things that are in the world, all of which are evil, whether they be good or bad. This happened to Demas in (2 Tim 4:10) and with others.

2 Tim 4:14-18

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:
15 Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.
16 At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.
17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Wrong doctrines are sinful. Revelation ends with telling us not to add or take away from God's Word. These are Commands or Laws; And transgression of the Law is sin (1 John 3:4).

If we as believers do not make a distinction between sin and evil, we will be trying to forgive evil when we are to overcome evil. Forgiving sin and overcoming evil committed by the same person is dealt with differently. We do not judge sin in an individual's life outside the cross, but we do judge evil, we abhor evil and we are to flee from it by having no fellowship with its unfruitful works. Those who are occupied and have a problem with evil and are deceived and being deceived are not subject to being forgiven through the blood of Christ, but they are subject to being delivered from evil by being rebuked, avoided and by themselves putting it away and abstaining from its appearance.

The scriptures do not instruct believers to forgive evil, in themselves or in others. Evil is something that God has to deal with outside the cross. Purity is the opposite of evil and God deals with evil through a process of purging fire, like a firey trial. Gold and silver is purified and refined by fire and firey trials purge the evil, which includes old leaven, from our lives that we might be presented spotless. It is only an opinion...but I believe that angels kept themselves purified by walking up and down and with coals of fire (2 Sam 22:9-13, Ps 18:8-14, Ps 140:8-13, Ez 1:4-13, 10:2, 28:14-19, Dan 7:9,10, 10:5,6, Zech 13:9)

The religious Pharisees were so occupied with living unto righteousness through the deeds of the law that they did not consider evil in their own heart. They were deceived in their heart not by sin or any violation of the law but through evil motives. They did not discern the Lord, who he was or why he had come into this world. They judged him as a sinner, a blasphemer and finally as one who cast out devils by Beelzebub. They finally considered him to be an evil man doing the work of the the prince of devils. Evil had influenced the perception of the religious Pharisees to such a place in their heart that they considered themselves good as keepers of the law and the Lord an evil man who had blasphemed, making himself equal with God.

These religious and self serving Pharisees had no discernment between their own sin and motivation of evil. They were constantly accusing others of sin while their own hearts were full of evil. Listen to what the Lord had to say to them in (Mt 23) and how he described them when he had had enough of their evil ways...

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

This is the best way that I have been able to explain the difference to people. Maybe it'll help for some, and as far as I can gather it does not contradict the Bible, but merely explains a bit different what transgression of the law is.

Sin is the actions, attitudes, thoughts, and words responsible for the existence of evil. (sin I'm sure can have a huge definition and both can still be true, but I believe sin is also this.)

Evil is the pattern of actions, attitudes, thoughts, and words responsible for the curse of sin. We know who the father of evil is, and even though God created the free-will to love... because free will exists, God did make it possible for evil to exist as well...otherwise we would be puppets pretty much. I would rather be a friend, worshiper, and admirer of God (among other things) because He's awesome, and because I know He's awesome, and because I want to know Him more for all eternity.

John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
"
A liar is evil, along with a murderer from the beginning, and one who does not abide in the truth because it didn't value it and such. Not valuing the truth is lying to yourself, or being lied to, and the father of lies is evil.

Some probably accept the book of Enoch as part of the living Word of God, and it says a name and then says to him ascribe all evil.

The curse of sin is part of something that God did not plant, water, or fertilize.

Sin is the acts that makes a soul become evil (corrupted). Like for an instance, if someone had slapped a person for no good reason at all, the person that has been slapped will be angry and which that person became corrupted (evil) behind a sinful act.
