So is the general consensus that demon possession in the Bible was mental illness?

Evil thoughts does plays a roll in how the brain function or develops. If spirit can only uses what you have stored up memories in the brain in order to communicate with you. And if you cannot understand if the spirit that is dwelling in you, that if it is of God or of the devil through memories what it is written about the Holy spirit ; then you will be lost and follow a corrupt spirit not knowing that it is corrupted. The devil distorts the mind so that we cannot examine in our minds whether in how to test to see what type of spirit that is dwelling in us. And so, we need to recall things that were said in the scriptures to help us to know what spirit to listen to.
Amen brother! God says to test the spirits which applies to not only false prophets but anything we hear or read. 1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
John 4:

He also says we do not struggle against flesh and blood but 3 diff realms of spiritual warfare! Eph 6:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Oh dear. I guess I'll play along.

My proof is there are no "video, news article, or anything that documents a case of demon possession in the modern first world similar to those depicted in Bible times."

If you think this is untrue, then the burden is on YOU to come up with proof that can discount my claim.

how much scientific proof is there for the majority of mental illness? is it not mostly based on psychiatric theory.

i think one of the biggest differences between the two, there have been many cured of demon possession, and of all the mental illness in the world, and the list of disorders gets bigger every year, not one cure . . .

wow, I just stopped in to see this topic has added quite a few comments since my last check in. I did read through them all, and unfortunately, it would take me all night to respond to every comment in detail so I will just say this: I appreciate the responses from everyone (even the negative ones :p), there have been some new perspectives shared and great insights given since I last checked in, so that's appreciated.

I think maybe what's most different between demon possession now and demon possession back then is not the possession itself, but rather societies acknowledgement of the possession. In the old days, it was a very exact and definite thing. "The neighbor two doors down has a demon making her mute" or "my child has a demon making him writhe around on the floor uncontrollably" are things that people in Bible times would say and that the community as a whole would accept. Today, it's just different.

So once again, I appreciate the comments! Everyone take care!

I think you are placing demons in a box or you are viewing them from very specific circumstances instead of the whole picture.

What does the Bible say about demons?

What does Satan look like? What do demons look like?

Anyone today can be possessed by a Demon. It does not matter where on this Earth you live.

There are many today who are Demon possessed. The problem is that today we label then as having mental problems.

well that's a problem then

that is not what scripture teaches

further, the actual rendering of possession should be that the person has the demon...the demon does not have the person

people throw the word possession around without even giving two seconds thought to what it really means

if a person is bought with the blood of Christ and they are living for Him, what kind of Father would God be, to allow that person to become possessed?

I'm not saying Christians are not attacked or even oppressed by demons, but they are not possessed...possession denotes ownership

I possess a car...the car does not possess me...I can get rid of the car...the car cannot give me away...it does not own me

what I'm hearing is that you feel societies today often view religious subjects differently than societies back then... true!... though, most things would be different.

I think one could also say that Jewish societies view religious subjects differently than Gentile societies do.
