This is a subject that I have recently become interested in as well. I'm glad that you wanted to look at this scripture in Numbers in context. As I try to reason this out in "context" as you say I think the strictness of the law was meant for this people who had been under the rule and have adopted many practices of the Egyptians. God required a holy people but it took a strict law and 40 years of hardship to do it. Many died in the wilderness and never got to see the promised land. However, those people would have bought with them the pagan practices of the Egyptians with them. Here is how I look at that scripture where I can apply it to my life. There are some current Sabbath day routines or practices that I may need to remove (stone) out of my life. We must ask ourselves, "How does God want me to keep his Sabbath day holy?" We may be able to rationalize what we allow--"I'm only working because I need these sticks to keep my family warm...I'm only shopping on the Sabbath to feed my family...etc, etc, etc." Of course, we shouldn't be critical of others but we should look at ourselves and decide if there is something that we could add or subtract to our Sabbath day worship that would bring us closer to God. I love your other comments that mention that we should focus on doing good, helping others, and focusing on God. Showing love and extra commitment to God by setting apart the Sabbath as something special is something that we should do as often as we are able.
Thank you for your observations and comments. I find it challenging to put complex thoughts into words that communicate accurately. It's really nice, once in a while, to hear from someone who understands the points I was trying to make.

I can't believe the typos. And I can't edit,so I'll do this so I look like I've got some sense. lol

Typo fixer-upper:

Apostle Paul said,we are all one in Christ. Sabbath pre existed God's Ten Commandments given to Moses. Which is why the command reads, remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

I don't think we would say the commands regarding moral behavior and respect for God no longer apply due to the arrival of Jesus.

It is still is a violation of God's moral teachings to steal, covet, murder. So why,if we are all one in Christ, do we dare say the Sabbath reminder is for Jews only?

When there were no Jews in the beginning. And yet we somehow say the other nine commandments still apply.

We have our rest in Jesus every day. However for six days in the week our attentions are occupied by the world we are in. Yet,are not part of.

One day away from the world's occupations so to rest solely, souly,in God's peace is a gift.
As Jesus said.
The Sabbath was made for us.
We were not made for the Sabbath.

In the church, the whole community of Holy Spirit filled ,indwelt, believers there's an ideology that pushes back and in a sense double talks itself.

It goes like this.

Sure,you can honor the Sabbath.
Just don't try to say it has to be kept in order to remain in God's grace.

What Bible conscious Christian would even think that way?

When we are told,we are not Saved by our works,so that we cannot boast. Though many sure seem to think we are,so they can.

We are saved by the grace of God. Who gave us his day of rest for our sakes. Sabbath seems to be the go-to for the , selective compliance argument.
You can choose to rest on the day God gifted you,but don't think you have to.

What other commands, that aren't reminders, can we select to not comply with?
Adultery?Lying? Idolatry?

You have a legal right to request Sabbath day as a day off, when applying for a job in America.

Why wouldn't we want to avail ourselves of that gift of God? One day where we unplug from the world we are in?
To rest in the peace of God that we are eternally a part of.

Imagine if Jesus came to you at sunset on Friday and said, join me for a whole day. Just you and me. Talking, sharing, enjoying your space in this busy world, together. No distractions.
Would we say, sorry,no can do. Sabbath is for the Jews only?
Your stupidity amazes me according to the biblical text which is what we are talking about in Mosaic law was not given to man in any form ever prior to Mount Sinai to Moses that's what's called the Mosaic law

The fact that the most fake law incorporates several moral laws that existed prior to the Mosaic law is not to put the horse before the carriage murder was never acceptable to God and adultery was never acceptable to God however it wasn't relevant until God put it into a specific Covenant for a specific people for a specific time for a specific purpose

Nowhere in the Mosaic law does it explain anything of that Covenant prior to the Mosaic law being given to Moses so all of this let's color in and make up s*** doesn't fly

The reason none of this makes sense to you or for that matter others in the Hebrew roots and SDA mindset fail to realize and it's a real showstopper you do not understand the Mosaic law and yet you are espousing complete fallacies about it proving further that you don't understand it

There never was a mosaic law prior to the giving of it at Sinai there wasn't a dress rehearsal all the way back to Adam and Eve the Mosaic law wasn't that the only way people understood sin it was a collection of rules and practices imposed by God on a specific people for a specific time

By proxy since you don't understand the Old Testament law or the Old Testament itself you have no clue when it comes to the New Testament because you misunderstand pretty much everything that's written about it for example Paul's writings most of you hate them because they contradict what you are trying to impose upon scripture to your own demise

What if we don't gather together any more, or just gather on holidays, weddings, funerals?

Most churches (organized religion) is teaching thing Jesus and His Apostles did not teach.

God's Word warns us against following false doctrine so it would be better to not go to church so you aren't siting under false doctrine with all the other tares than to be true to the Lord and keep Him first place in one's like which is always better than sitting under deception.

Didn't Jesus say do not stop gathering?

He always gave warnings about following false teachers too as in don'[tr do it!

There is no penalty if you're a gentile and only if you are following the Mosaic law would there be any penalty

Those living under the Mosaic law will burn in hell for eternity because nobody can be saved following the Mosaic law which is why Jesus came and ended the law of Moses and started the New Covenant where those that love the Lord will follow the Law of Christ as taught in the New Testament

Leaves me out that picture

Exactly. He would have to reject Jesus as Lord and Savior in order to follow the Mosaic law

Are you thinking of these verses in the Epistle to the Hebrews?

(Heb 10:24-25 NKJV) And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

So all gathering, or most gathering are false teaching?
Sitting in living room is correct teaching?

Where ever the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ is at leading people in to the Truth of God's Word, that's where Truth can be found.

Those who know the Word of the Lord know and understand God's warnings concerning mass deception in the end times and those who are not accepting or considering the whole counsel of the Lord are the ones sitting under false doctrines at some of these "gatherings" getting deceived which is how they become reprobate.

Very few churches accept and teach the whole counsel of the Lord. The ones that do are typically small churches that are small because the preacher isn't not an ear tickler.

This i do agree, I enjoy small church, hold each other accountable, from leaders to members, iron sharpen iron.

Yep, small churches that actually operate as a church is always better than the big churches that turn in to corporations who brow beat the people for money so they can service the massive debt the corporation takes on as it builds bigger buildings

That's not what it meant.
Jesus saying someone was of their father the devil was a reference to their spiritual and moral alignment with the devil.

lucifer was not stupid.

The very definition is pure STUPIDITY is being God's top angel who decides to attempt to over thrown the Lord after having seen the Lord in action knowing He is all powerful.

There's never in the history of all eternity been anyone more STUPID that lucifer as he made himself to be God's enemy which is why God calls him satan which means ""STUPID NUTJOB who made himself to be God's enemy"

In the ages to come satan will forever be the definition of pure STUPIDITY!

That's not what it meant.

Actually it is what Jesus meant. He pointed out to them that they were enemies of God and yet they still insisted in rejecting Jesus to continue walking with the devil as their leader.

That's active STUPIDITY in action and is why they are burning in hell right now. They were slow, really really slow.

^^^ This!

@Seeker47, if you don't mind my asking, would you care to explain your reason for preferring that spelling of Our Lord's name, rather than the usual English spelling?

And another, unrelated, question:

Apart from the Seventh Day Adventists, are there any other Christian denominations that feel obliged to observe the Old Testament Sabbath?

No problem. If you follow my posts, I often refer to the Son of God several ways. Jesus, Christ, Messiah and Yeshua, his true Hebrew name. They are all valid and I use them interchangeably. I see no distinction and criticize none.

About the Sabbath, why do you call it the Old Testament Sabbath? Jesus kept the Sabbath as did his disciples and followers for the first 250 years after the resurrection. Constantine abolish the Sabbat in the third century. Historically, some believers have never abandoned this practice and it has remained prominent in several fundamental Christian churches. That is hardly "Old Testament".

I also must note that there are millions of Christ followers who keep Sabbath today, and the number is growing rapidly. YHWH told his people to keep the seventh day Holy; set apart for Him. Most of us do not keep Shabbat as orthodox Jews do, but honor God on His special day with prayer, study, family, rest, and doing acts of grace. We do this out of love and gratitude, not out of compulsion. Many of us then follow with the Lord's Day corporate worship according to church doctrine. We see no conflict.

I congratulate you for asking open and honest questions. That doesn't happen often.

Thank you, @Seeker47! In answer to your question about the OT Sabbath, I think it’s just as well to be specific because, in Christian use, we more often see the term used to refer to Sunday than to Saturday ― at least in English, though I don’t know of any other language where that curious shift in meaning occurred.

I’m inclined to disagree with you about the date when Christians adopted Sunday rather than Saturday as the day for church attendance and for the weekly rest from work. It’s true that the earliest manuscripts documenting the names of the days in Church Latin ― Dies Dominica, Feria Secunda, Feria Tertia, ... Sabbatum ― date from as late as the reign of Constantine. No doubt about it. However, that could simply mean that most Christian documents from the earlier period, before Christianity gained full legal recognition throughout the Roman Empire, failed to survive the 250 years or so of its semi-underground existence characterized by frequent outbursts of violent persecution.

7th day. Holy convocation. A commandment as well as a blessing.

Get together with believers face to face, not on TV. :)

@Seeker47, our brief discussion about the Saturday or Sunday question has reminded me of something odd I once noticed about Luke’s wording in a certain verse in Acts. I’d be grateful if you could take a quick look at the last few words in the opening post of a new thread I just started, titled “Significance of ‘breaking bread’ in the NT ― a question.”
