Long hair thread... @LifelongLearner would be interesting...I don't have super long hair but it would be interesting to hear how you take care of long hair, do you braid it, how often do you wash it, does it get annoying?
Also it seems really tall women seem to wear their hair long, I've noticed. I suppose to balance things. And film and tv stars wear extensions or wigs. Extensions require a lot of upkeep, not sure could handle it.

Men with long hair, would be interesting what their take is, for themselves or what they think of women's 'crown of glory'. I've also wondered...why do gentlemen prefer blondes? I wish I could have golden hair...
You have a lot of interesting ideas yourself, it would be good if it's a long hair in general thread, but us long haired old dears, could do with sharing successful tips, as hair does weaken as we age.

My hair has gone from well and truly bum length to a little above my waist, just cos it's suddenly started to weaken/tangle/break easily etc. The physical probs i've experienced recently are probably big contributors, i've developed some ideas which help. Might be useful to others who have developed probs too, hopefully, they'll be having lightbulb moments too.

My little cat's tea time, blessings and all that's good for now

As a man with long hair, I just don't care.
I don't have any treatment plan, I just shampoo and condition every time I take a shower. Whenever I think my hair is too tangled, I comb it out. I let the ends split and break off.
There's times when it feels annoying, and it quite often gets in my mouth when I eat.
But I've grown accustomed to how it looks on my head, so trimming it just feels like not the ideal option.
And I've been told by a few ladies in public that it looks nice, so... It's staying.

I don't think much about women's hair when I see it. Back in the old'n days, women tended to wear bonnets and other coverings for their heads all the time, and my generation just hasn't done that. There's a saying that things get less special the more often you see it, and for me that's the case with girls 'crown of glory'.
But I suppose if I saw a woman with really long hair, like hair that went all the way down to her thighs and below, that would be a spectacle.

I don't care if hair is blonde, white, black, or red. I think dyed hair only works under certain circumstances. But if the hair is somewhat frizzled, it'd imply to me that there's something about her lifestyle that's like mine, which is what I'd look for.

I've never known a gentleman who repeated that phrase who was actually a gentleman. In my experience, men who say that tend to also judge women in other unfair ways. So don't worry about your hair not being gold.
All the most influential women involved in my life had black and burnette hair, with the exception of some of my female school teachers.

I noticed my long-ish hair getting brittle a few years ago. I started taking powdered collagen, a teaspoon every day (I mix it with coffee). No more brittleness, and my hair is actually thicker now at 43 than it was in my 30s.

I think you're vegetarian though? 🤔 The kind I use is marine collagen, do you make an exception for fish/seafood?

Ooh! Your tips would be seriously useful when i get the thread going, you know your stuff for sure. Is it amateur or professional interest? Definitely not the sort of stuff people would know without good research skills, you have really helped me. The issues obviously won't just disappear, however, i'm so much more comfortable now thanks to you confirming the direction my thoughts were heading in and offering great further info. It rocks being able to type at a decent speed pretty comfortably again, that's for sure! 😻

Sadly no, i don't eat fish but am a good cook, stuff like my samosas, lentil based shepherdless pie etc, are to die for level. I'm not a preachy veggie, judging others is what i count a real crime, *walk a mile in my shoes is so relevant* eating or not eating meat is personal choice. I enjoyed eating meat myself when really young but finding out about factory farming, put the kibosh on that. Your advice is definitely always welcome tho, you really know your stuff.

I need to do OS reinstalls on all my rigs, it's been almost a year since last reinstall on two of them, which is an unwelcome record for me. I'll post the thread next week, might be done with the fresh installs by Monday or Tuesday if i knuckle down and go for it, have backed up all i want for the fresh installs to a 2tb nvme in a portable enclosure. Hopefully, you'll post some recommendations on the thread, this old dear will be grateful for sure!

God's blessings and all that's good from me for now SM!

I'm glad the advice was helpful! I've always been interested in medical stuff, growing up on a farm I was our resident amateur vet and figured out a lot of workable home remedies. Thought about going into human or animal medicine but didn't want to commit to school for 8 years, I liked being outside too much and already had a small business going by the time I graduated high school.

In hindsight I'm glad I didn't, I would have gone the conventional medicine route, learned how to push pills and ended up hating it. I met a pet herbalist in my 20s and learned a lot from her, so now my medical interests are nutritional, herbal, mineral, physical (stretching and such) emotional, spiritual, and even bacterial (the microbes are often overlooked when it comes to health but there's so many good ones out there, God made it all to work in a balance!)

I just give out free amateur medical advice to friends and family but I might go for a natural health certification at some point. I love how the natural remedies tend to be inexpensive and typically (not always!) low side effects, so often it doesn't hurt to give them a try. 😊

Ah OK, if you're totally meat-free then I would try flax seed meal for your hair. It can be used in most baked goods but you have to adjust the flour and oil in the recipe. Growing up on the farm, flax seeds were always a go-to for improving the critters' fur and feathers! They are packed with omega oils and help with joint inflammation as well. You won't see results immediately but give it a few months and your hair should be stronger and shinier 😎👍

:unsure:More and more I'm thinking I need to start tossing some in our food.

They are seriously good for you! The only drawback is a short shelf life once they're ground into flour. We usually buy them whole in bulk and grind them right before they are added to the recipe. Or you can skip grinding them and add them whole to breads, cookies or muffins.

They are very oily and taste rich and nutty, not too expensive when you purchase bulk whole seeds. 🤓

Ok good to know.
Flaxseed is in some LSA mixtures? Sprinkle in your porridge or something.

What I want to know is if any of you long haired ladies use hair straighteners. Or maybe curling wands. Just want to know what you do to style your hair, or whether you just braid it the evening and sleep in it and wake up in the morning with luscious curls.

Wow! I dabble some myself but you are seriously gifted in such matters, i'm not one for allopathic medicine either. Definitely going to try out the flax seed meal.

Just looking in quick, installing new operating systems on 3 rigs, 2 down, one to go. God's blessings and hugs from me for now :giggle:

Hi Lanolin, I had to look up LSA mix because I've never seen it here but yes, "linseed" is another name for flax seed, it is the L in LSA. Looks like a great way to add some extra nutrients to regular dishes!

My hair is only long-ish, currently just past my shoulder blades. I brush it wet and then wrap it around a long strip of terrycloth so it doesn't dry frizzy. It has a little bit of natural curl so if I can get it to behave until it's dry it halfway stays that way. 😆

I've learned that eating figs every day keeps my bald spot away. I've had occassion to test this four times over the years, and that's the way it is.

Much love!

I suppose I could google but I would clarify...what TASTY foods is collagen in?

Greetings and hugs SM, getting my rigs sorted nicely but just recovering from sudden cramping issues. Do think it's definitely magnesium deficiency, been really busy, like to fast 2/3 days a week to detox but this was the first time for a couple of months. I did still take the magnesium supplements but think i probably didn't digest them well enough, because of fasting.

Yep, i had really awful cramps, affecting both legs at once, which was a first. It was just the one day, thankfully, i'm eating today, taken about 450mgs of magnesium and all's good so far.

So hope i haven't put the kibosh on the improvement, wondering if i was /still am pretty deficient in magnesium levels. Don't think i've been taking supplements for even two months yet and that maybe i really need to be careful for a while yet. Would appreciate your thoughts about it if you have the time.

God's blessings and hugs from me for now ❤️

I hadn't heard of that, but it's interesting! A quick search confirmed that figs are a great source of vitamins and minerals that support hair growth and health. Great option for vegetarians like @LifelongLearner , too! 😎👍

Figs might not help for certain types of hair loss like autoimmune or hormonal issues, but no harm in trying them for anyone who isn't allergic. Thanks so much for sharing! 😊

What foods is collagen in?
I suppose I could google but I would clarify...what TASTY foods is collagen in?

Hi Lanolin, collagen is primarily found in skin and connective tissues, so the best direct sources of it are fish and poultry dishes that include the skin (such as barbecue chicken wings). Bone broth of any kind is a great source as well. Chicken feet are supposed to be an amazing collagen source but I have never had them, if I can find them prepared authentically I will definitely give them a try! 😆

If you are a vegetarian or younger than 30, you can go for the food sources that provide the building blocks for your body to produce its own collagen (this is a good thing to do at any age, but since our bodies dont produce collagen as well past 40 then most of us go for the animal-based direct sources that I listed above)

Good building- block sources for collagen are dairy and egg whites, seeds and nuts (especially linseed aka flaxseed), beans, garlic, and anything high in vitamin C (citrus, berries, bell peppers, broccoli, kale, etc)

I have been taking powdered gelatin (basically cooked collagen) in my coffee daily for years, I find it helps my joints but did not notice an improvement with hair health until I started adding the plain collagen powder as well. They both have very little taste and can be dissolved undetected in many savory dishes, especially soups and porridge.

Hope that helps!

Hey Lifelong, I've had a crazy weekend, sorry for the late reply!

Fasting actually causes your body to ditch magnesium and other electrolytes, which can cause severe cramping. Taking magnesium on an empty stomach can cause some other issues as well, it's recommended to take it with a healthy fat like avocado or nuts and seeds.

Given your particular situation you might want to consider a small, well- balanced, nutrient-dense daily meal rather than complete fasting. That way you are not taking your supplements on an empty stomach.

What form of Magnesium are you taking? There are different kids, like magnesium sulfate, magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate, etc. The bottle should tell you what kind you are using. 🙂

Blessings and cheers SM, glad i decided to look in here quickly. Hope your weekend was crazy in a good way and no worries, you're not late replying, especially since the great advice you offer is free and makes a lot more sense to me than the rubbish most allopathic "Doctors" spout!

"Fasting actually causes your body to ditch magnesium and other electrolytes, which can cause severe cramping."

Ah! I did wonder if there might be a link, sounds like it's likely best to take it with something it can bind with? Think i mentioned i haven't been one for supplements much so far but being old now and still veggie, it's probably best to start doing so. Your fasting rec. seems sound too, once again, strict fasting at my age can probably cause more problems than it sorts.

Cheers and hugs for your great advice, i'm going to have a pretty early night, it's just gone 10pm here. God's blessings and all that's good from me for now

Well, speaking of electrolytes, I found this brand STUR. At our grocery store it is so much cheaper than some of the well known "health brands". It does not contain fake sugars (aka sucralose, aspartame) They make electrolyte options as well as just plain flavor drops without the electrolytes. Oh, and the coloring is from natural sources, not factory made dyes.
1776817588906.png 1776817689452.png The electrolytes also come in drop form, I just can't find a good pic right now. They usually have a blue cap. When we have been sick or fasting and feeling the need for balancing those electrolytes we've noticed this brand to help.
