THE BEST IDEA: Jesus often gives us unique information that no one has taught previously. Many cultures have so-called "golden rules", but Jesus gives us the best idea: "Therefore, whatever you want people to do to you, do also to them; for this is the law and the prophets" Matthew 7:12.

Unlike many "golden rules", this is pro-active, teaching us to reach out and help, even if others do not act first towards us, rather than to just do no harm to anyone. And it is underscored by "for this is the law and the prophets", giving us our goal and purpose here on earth.

Most unfortunately for us all, those who insist on creating a religion out of Jesus, in doing so greatly obscure the fact that much of what he says is focused on human behavior; how we should treat other people. This is not a religion any more than basic laws and ethics are a religion. And, it shouldn't be all that surprising that history's greatest teacher would give us the best idea.

Shortly before being betrayed, Jesus says to his followers: "This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you" John 15:12. Note this command is singular and it greatly simplifies not only God's law, but basic human rights and the entirety of legitimate ethics. Additionally, this singular command simplifies the positive manner in which we all should conduct ourselves during our brief time on earth.

I agree that love is what matters most.

I strongly recommend you use the NKJV rather than quoting KJV Middle English, which makes it difficult for sinners to understand the good news of Jesus. Obviously, "charity" doesn't mean the same thing as love to many modern people and words like "ye" and "shall not" can make God sound harsh and unforgiving. "You should not steal" is much less harsh sounding; Even atheists tell their children that they should not kill, lie or steal.

Actually, only last week I got the insight that the Golden Rule is God's basic moral law revealed by common sense or logic per Rom. 1:20 (cf. Rom. 2:14-15).

Many who defend Christianity apologetically make the mistake of asserting that morality is objective. However, “Do to others as you would have others do to you”, is as subjective as one can get.

Every human being knows when they are treating another person in ways they would not want done to them. By this subjective golden rule all are convicted by the question, “Would you want someone to do that to you?”

What people who break the golden rule do post facto to justify themselves in their own eyes, is to introduce supposedly mitigating circumstances that exempt them from breaking the rule. If they shop-lift, they will argue that the shop-keeper has more stuff than they really need, or they are charging too much for their goods, or the system is stacked against and is oppressing people like me, so I can't afford to buy what I want, etc. But deep down they know that, if they were that shop-keeper, they would not want someone to shoplift from them.

Our conscience, IMO, is this sense by which we compare whether what we are doing is something I would want done to me.

What is ment for making a religion out of jesus? If you are referring to scripture as our decision maker we are to believe the word of God and act accordingly.
God is love ...but make no mistake about that love, it came and comes with a price.
The preaching of the gospel has been diluted to where the full message is not preached. Society does not accept the consequences of there actions and lifestyles therefore repentance is not required according to many.
JESUS is coming back soon and the kingdom that will be established does not except many of the actions and lifestyle society has chosen to follow.
So when love is offered, ( that is to tell your neighbor the truth of what will be ) and be concerned about there very souls we find that love for the most part is rejected and often ment with contention.
The o.p. has expressed concerns on civil rights and LGBTQ and I have no problem with either but I do have to say the gospel is just like its author...never changing.

Actually, only last week I got the insight that the Golden Rule is God's basic moral law revealed by common sense or logic per Rom. 1:20 (cf. Rom. 2:14-15).

If God is love, and God is spirit, then the love God speaks of can only come through by the Holy Spirit.
He plants it in a garden for it to grow.
When the enemy seeds tares,those are the thoughts that oppose love entering your mind before being sown into the heart.
If it comes out of your mouth,or through your actions before rebuking it,then you are a "witness" to it rather than the Word which you were brought into this world as a witness.

Good insight/explanation of the spiritual meaning of analogical language.
I would relate it to Matt. 7:12 and Romans 1:20. 2:14-15 regarding general revelation as follows:

GW is the seed planted in souls having MFW with the intent that they be saved (1Tim. 2:3-4),
but some soil/souls choose to be hard (Matt. 13:14-15) and believe the enemy's lies, beginning with A&E (Gen. 3:6-9),
thereby becoming worthless as a witness for God and bound/bundled for hell (Matt. 13:30).

The Book of James explicitly states that if a person claims to have faith but shows absolutely no external change or spiritual fruit (which James calls "Works"), that faith is an illusion.

"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
