I believe the Bible to be the word of God but I do not believe it is 'complete'. It does not contain all of God's word. There is nothing in the bible that says it contains all of God's word. Does God not continue to speak today? And are His words not scripture like times of old?

John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

He's still talking. Just a whole lot aren't listening to him. Lots of people know all the words written and have never heard the voice of God themselves. It is very sad.

No, the canon is closed. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Tim 3:16-17 (KJV)


Scripture being the Old and New Testament.

Yes, it is true that Jesus did many other things. The point is that God HAS spoken by His Son and has given us everything we need regarding His Word, as the above two verses of Scripture declare. Everything He wanted us to know is contained in the Bible. Whatever else is said to be spoken of God is to be tested against what we KNOW He has said.

Deuteronomy 29 :29 “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law


John 20 :31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

The voice of God is heard through the reading of His word.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God...so why not more scripture by inspiration of God. That scripture doesn't mean there is no more scripture.

Someone above mentioned Jude 3, the faith has been once for all delivered. In the past. The deliverance isn't in a continuing process. It's finished. Done.

People have changed the words of the bible over time. So God has left us alone...no more revelation? Of course not. He's not going to leave us to interpret his words for ourselves and try to guess the truth of all the doctrines being taught today. He continues to speak through a prophet and a quorum of the 12 apostles today (Heb 13:8). The people back then didn't have the bible as we have it today. The books were compiled over time into what we have today. Some of the people back then may have had a difficult time accepting more scripture just as many do today. They may have said, "The book of St. John...why do we need another book? We have enough!" God does everything in his power for the salvation of his children...so naturally He will continue to call prophets to speak the truth.

Ephesians 4:11-14 teaches us the need for Christ's church organization including the need for prophets and apostles today.

Ephesians 4 also talks about ministry gifts being used until Paul and company all come to a 'knowledge of the unity of the faith'... 'a measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ'.....

The completed Word of God fits this VERY well.. it is even something that allows people to no longer be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine... so it is about a standard.. a measure .. that gives unity of THE faith.. of Jesus Christ..

If this ain't the bible.. I don't know what it is!

Then you turn over to 1st Corithians 13

There is something perfect that causes tongues prophecy and gift of knowledge to cease..

Note--- this thing is related to prophecy tongues and gift of knowledge.. and prophecy and tongues and gift of knowledge were in part in Paul's day..
'we know in part and we prophecy in part'

When you look at the Greek word for perfect-- this is telios-- something complete or mature..
Also when you look at that which is perfect-- or the perfect thing.. it is an inanimate object..
So when you put something that is complete as the which renders the partial prophecy tongues and gift of knowledge as ceasing..
it becomes obvious - that which is in part.. is also the same thing that is complete later.

So this rules out the second coming of Jesus.. because He was never in part! What is in part in Paul's time is completed with 'that which is perfect'

SO

What was prophecy, tongues and gift of knowledge.. revealing? God's revelation
Prophecy-- speaking forth God's Word.. whether in reference to the future or in reference to already revealed scripture- revelation.
Tongues-- revealing God's revelation through earthly languages unknown to the speaker of them.. but known to the listener (Acts chapter 2)
Gift of knowledge-- knowledge of God's revelation

What is the bible? A record of God's revelation to His people! Complete.. mature.. lacking nothing necessary for completeness.

So.. Ephesians 4.. unity of the faith.. measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.. that allows stable reference point.. the bible is these things!

Corinthians 13.. something that is complete.. that renders the tools used to share God's revealed Word to be put away.. the bible is this this!


NOW

This does not mean God does not talk to people now! He does as has been posted before.. by applying scripture to your life.. learning from the examples set by the people in scripture. Try applying the scripture to your life and see what happens! You will definitely start to experience God directly relating to ya! Not through some audible voice.. but through a strong, quiet,noticeable guiding hand in your life!

Heed these words.. all who wish to add to the bible:

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Mat 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

Isa 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

We mustn't forget that what is recorded in the Word is only a record of what God spoke personally to the authors of that Word. We too can hear God in like manner.
Many people can read the bible but still not actually hear the voice of God speak.

Exactly, even everything recorded in the bible is such a slim record, (but the most important record) . And even what we do have, many only believe a slimmer portion still of that.

The OT canon was closed approximately 400 years before Christ. We are under the New Covenant of Christ. It is closed or we would never know if we are fulfilling his will. It has been once for all delivered. God spoke in the last day s by his son.

Sure, the canon is closed, we shouldnt make the mistake of thinking that God is still writing essential doctrine. But.. suppose a book was written of all the wisdom and insight, dreams and revelation and visions God has given Christians since, of all the miracles, of all the answered prayer, of all the divine intervention. It would not contradict the bible, it would confirm it even more.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 is referring to the OT. There was no uniform New Testament when that letter was written, and certainly no canon that included all of the same NT letters we have now. At least, there is no evidence that such a canon existed. Our current collection was solidified in the 4th century (though it had mostly been agreed upon a couple of centuries earlier). Anyone who has studied church history knows that. And that verse at the end of Revelation that talks about "adding to or taking away from the words written in this book" is referring to Revelation, not the whole New Testament or whole Bible; to say otherwise it to take the verse out of context. When the canon was put in order, Revelation was put last, thus causing the assumption that the verse refers to the entire Bible (i.e. everything that had preceded that verse, and that was now bound in one "book").

Parts of the Nt were completed by the time Paul wrote that letter, Peter referred to Pauls writings as Scripture.

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction 2 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV)

So Scripture at the time of 2 Timothy included James, the letters of Paul, Mark, Luke, and Acts. And 1 Peter is dated at 63 AD and 2 Peter at 63 or 64, the same as 2 Timothy.

The reason we don't add to scripture now, is because the whole point of prophecy, the entire OT and NT.. all the symbolism and anologies.. are about Jesus!

The OT.. symbolises and prepares the way for Jesus.. the NT shows what Jesus has done and His ministry and the way He works in that ministry not being physically present now.

The bible is complete because it is all about Jesus.. the whole thing! It is all we need to know. Record all that God has done since the bible and you won't have anything different from how Jesus was operating in the bible.. it would be an exercise that would reveal nothing new.. God's covenants of service with his people have not changed since the NT. The Holy Spirit doesn't work any differently than He said He did and will work.

If people want to have Jesus working exactly as He did with the earliest scripture.. including making new books.. bear in mind this:

When God flooded the earth.. .He promised never to do it again. A temporary act .. with a new promise

People were sacrifciing animals under the OT covenant.. this ended with Jesus as the ultimate lamb.. and the fulfillment and symbol of all sacrifices before hand. God enters into a new covenant with His people where the method of service changes with the NT. So another example of God remaining the same but not always doing the same things with His people.

This can also be applied to apostles.. and prophets..

apostles-- eyewitnesses of Jesus Christ.. their office ceased with their deaths.
prophets-- foretellers of Jesus Christ .. office ceased with Jesus coming and also completion of God's Word.

This isn't limiting God.. this is honouring the way He works with His people so that His way of working with us now is understood more!

Within the confines of the Word of God.. the bible are everything you need to know about spiritual things.. full stop. Apply what is in the bible to your life and that is how God willl speak to ya!

Actually in practice everyone adds to scripture in their own way. Every pastor who preaches a sermon not confined to the Word only, every believer who gets a good idea which is not found in the bible.
Know this expression?:
"God helps those who help themselves".
Not in the bible. Yet is accepted as scripture by quite a few Christians.
That's one example.
What constitutes adding to the bible and not adding to the bible is very subjective.

If your not hearing the voice of God today you are missing God. Pray to him. The holy spirit is alive and well and talking to those who are close to him. God bless you.
