There is no reason to be afraid of God. Jesus came on this earth for redemption
and reconciliation, not execution. If anyone wants to be afraid, they have the right
to do so but personally I feel perfectly comfortable living in His heart. There are
many verses that have fear the Lord in them in many different contexts. There are
also many that say; don't not be afraid. Once we've surrendered completely to Him,
I see absolutely no reason to be afraid.

It is going to be a terrifying thing to stand before God without Christ - in that case - yes those need to have fear as in being afraid as Jesus said in Luke 12:5 - about being thrown into hell.However - John said that this type of fear for the Christian means that they are not yet perfected in the love of God for them yet. Why? Because fear involves punishment and there is no such thing for a Christian. ( despite what works-based believers and those that think we lose our salvation think ) We are one with the Lord. As Jesus is - so are we in this world in our inner man - the real us - the new creation in Christ.1 John 4:17-19 (NASB) [SUP]17 [/SUP] By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. [SUP]18 [/SUP] There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. [SUP]19 [/SUP] We love, because He first loved us.
It was precisely this fear of hell that lead me to Jesus. At the same time, I had prayed I don't know how many times for Jesus to save me because for the longest time, I was not not assured of my salvation. Then sometime ago I was diagonized with OCD( I might have had it way before that) which is not a good combination because then I felt like I had to pray the perfect prayer and then would question if I said something right after I prayed it and would repeat the prayer.

Cherie - I think you will love this description I came across in the book of Job today. See below:

Job 28New King James Version (NKJV)

Job’s Discourse on Wisdom

1 “Surely there is a mine for silver,
And a place where gold is refined.
[SUP]2 [/SUP]Iron is taken from the earth,
And copper is smelted from ore.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]Man puts an end to darkness,
And searches every recess
For ore in the darkness and the shadow of death.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]He breaks open a shaft away from people;
In places forgotten by feet
They hang far away from men;
They swing to and fro.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]As for the earth, from it comes bread,
But underneath it is turned up as by fire;
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Its stones are the source of sapphires,
And it contains gold dust.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]That path no bird knows,
Nor has the falcon’s eye seen it.
[SUP]8 [/SUP]The proud lions[SUP][a][/SUP] have not trodden it,
Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]He puts his hand on the flint;
He overturns the mountains at the roots.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]He cuts out channels in the rocks,
And his eye sees every precious thing.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]He dams up the streams from trickling;
What is hidden he brings forth to light.

The above discourse is to indicate the sheer value of resources that are available under the earth to man. From Gold, Silver, Sapphire and other resources. These are not easily found. Man has to through great expense and effort uproot mountains, dig through rocks, etc to find these mineral resources - to which is attached great value in the mind of man.

[SUP]12 [/SUP]“But where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Man does not know its value,
Nor is it found in the land of the living.

Yet we find an interesting introduction here at this point in Job. The introduction of Wisdom and Understanding. The passages say that Mankind has no true sense of its value (v13), nor whereabouts it is to be obtained (v14). No amount of searching will do. It cannot, like the great minerals buried under the earth be sought through investment in time and resources, or patience.
[SUP]

14 [/SUP]The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
[SUP]15 [/SUP]It cannot be purchased for gold,
Nor can silver be weighed for its price.
[SUP]16 [/SUP]It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
In precious onyx or sapphire.
[SUP]17 [/SUP]Neither gold nor crystal can equal it,
Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold.
[SUP]18 [/SUP]No mention shall be made of coral or quartz,
For the price of wisdom is above rubies.
[SUP]19 [/SUP]The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,
Nor can it be valued in pure gold.

But we can get a glimpse that God values Wisdom and Understanding FAR higher than what man is able to pay. It cannot even be bought for all of the mineral wealth under the earth. It cannot be priced.

[SUP]
20 [/SUP]“From where then does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
[SUP]21 [/SUP]It is hidden from the eyes of all living,
And concealed from the birds of the air.
[SUP]22 [/SUP]Destruction and Death say,
‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’
[SUP]23 [/SUP]God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
[SUP]24 [/SUP]For He looks to the ends of the earth,
And sees under the whole heavens,
[SUP]25 [/SUP]To establish a weight for the wind,
And apportion the waters by measure.
[SUP]26 [/SUP]When He made a law for the rain,
And a path for the thunderbolt,
[SUP]27 [/SUP]Then He saw wisdom[SUP][b][/SUP] and declared it;
He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out.

This thing of great value, namely Wisdom and Understanding, of which is greater value than all the treasures of the Earth ---- God knows. He knows where it is to be found. And it comes forth from Him (he declares it - v27). And this is it below:

[SUP]28 [/SUP]And to man He said,
‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
And to depart from evil is understanding.’”

Wisdom is this - The Fear of the Lord
Understanding is this - Departing from Evil

If any false teacher here tells you that neither of the above are important.......well then you can come to your own conclusion.

Here is a corollary for the above scriptures in Job:
Mark 8
[SUP]36 [/SUP]For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? [SUP]37 [/SUP]Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? [SUP]38 [/SUP]For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and
sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Do you see how Jesus sums up all of this chapter in Job in one paragraph? Read through this carefully. Look for the comparison.

The fear of the Lord is to be scared that God can let you go to Hell, for doing what is evil, so it helps you to do right.

What is the fear of the Lord and how do you know you have it?
The meaning of FEAR GOD a Non-Believer.

The meaning of FEAR GOD or a Believer

Believer Fear Definition: The "fear" of the Lord is about "reverence toward God", "respect for Him", "love and appreciation", "holding God & His beloved Son in high esteem" "Awe".
(Reverence-Respect-Honor-Awe!)

Non-Believer Definition: "anticipation of danger" "dread of danger" "alarm"
(Danger-Dread-Alarm)

Ephesians 5:21 Submit to one another out of (reverent) fear for Christ.

Proverbs 22:4 humility and the (reverent) "fear of the LORD" are riches, and honour, & life.

Psalm 25:14 The secret of the LORD is with them that (reverently) "fear him"; & he will shew them his covenant.

Psalm 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that (reverently) "fear him", upon them that hope in his mercy;

Psalm 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that (reverently) "fear him", & delivereth them.

Psalm 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that (reverently) "fear him".

Psalm 85:9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that (reverently) "fear him"; that glory may dwell in our land.

Psalm 103:11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that (reverently) "fear him".

Psalm 103:13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that (reverently) "fear him".

Psalm 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that (reverently) "fear him" and his righteousness unto His children;

Psalm 111:5 He hath given meat unto them that (reverently) "fear him": he will ever be mindful of his covenant.

Psalm 145:19 He will fulfil the desire of them that (reverently) "fear him": he also will hear their cry, & will save them.

Psalm 147:11 The LORD taketh pleasure in them that (reverently) "fear him", in those that hope in his mercy.

Luke 1:50 And his mercy is alway's on them that (reverently) "fear him".

Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God "is a sun & shield": 'the LORD will give grace (FAVOR) and glory": "no good thing will he withhold" from them that walk uprightly.

Psalm 37:4 Delite in the Lord, & he will give you the desires of your heart.

So, by entitlement (not because of who we are, but "WHO'S" we are) we already have ALL BLESSING in above mentioned scripture's. We need to know, believe and confess this. Faith & Confession (the spoked Word) are the Key & Bridge to receiving them. Maranatha

2 Corinthians 5:21
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
(Every person that has received Jesus as Lord: Is the "RIGHTEOUS" before GOD thru Jesus Christ)

Romans 3:22.
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
(WE ARE THE "RIGHTEOUS" BEFORE GOD THRU JESUS CHRIST! So, His favour surround's us like a shield")

Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.

Psalms 5:12 The LORD, wilt "bless" the "righteous"; with "favour & surround him as with a shield"

What is the fear of the Lord and how do you know you have it?
Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Pro 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Heb 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Ecc 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil, and not want evil, for God will punish evil.

What is the fear of the Lord and how do you know you have it?
By the fear of the Lord one departs from evil (Proverbs 16:6 NKJV)

it is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate (Proverbs 8:13 NKJV)

The rewards for it are riches/honor and life in Proverbs 22:4.

You can have fear of the Lord by studying the Scriptures and living the Godly manners taught by it.

You wont be visited with evil (Proverbs 19:23)

The evil mentioned here for example is the destined punishment of God for Nineveh (Jonah 3:10)

meaning the evil mentioned here is God's punishment and to be clear are curses.

God's curses can be read in the whole Deuteronomy 28.
