THE LAW OF CHRIST

"The law of Christ” is not presented in Scripture as a replacement law with a new numbered code. It refers to living according to all Christ commanded.​

There is a lot of confusion about the expression “the law of Christ.” So let us keep this simple and look at what Scripture actually says.

The exact expression “law of Christ” appears only once in the New Testament:

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

James uses another similar expression to “law of Christ.” He speaks instead of the “royal law”:

“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you do well.” (James 2:8)

James then immediately speaks about the commandments against adultery and murder. He does not say that the Ten Commandments were replaced.

So what does “the law of Christ” actually mean?

The answer is found by looking at Christ Himself. Jesus gave His followers commandments and told them to keep them:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.” (John 14:21)

Jesus commanded us to love God, love our neighbor, love our enemies, forgive, show mercy, do good, remain faithful, and do the will of the Father. He also directed the man who asked about eternal life to the commandments:

“If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” (Matthew 19:17)

Therefore, if someone says, “I follow the law of Christ,” the biblical meaning is simply this:

I follow what Christ commanded me to keep.

That includes all the commandments Christ gave His disciples. It does not mean that Christ created a replacement law that cancels the Ten Commandments.

In fact, Jesus said:

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

So the phrase “law of Christ” should never be used as a vague excuse to throw away God's commandments. If we want to know what the law of Christ is, we should simply ask: What did Christ command us to do?

His commandments are all things He gave us to keep.

Rom 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

The rich man asked Jesus how can he obtain eternal life and He said keep the commandments that have to do with loving people.

Which love does not work any harm to a person so love is the fulfilling of the law.

The rich man said he did that but Jesus said he lacked one thing to sell all he has and give to the poor and then he can have eternal life.

But the rich man did not want to accept that which the love of money is the root of all evil because it neglects the poor and needy which is not love.

Act 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

Act 2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Act 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

Act 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

Rev 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

Rev 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Rev 2:3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

Rev 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

The early Church sold their possessions and distributed to those who had need.

This Church of Ephesus was neglecting that and Jesus said they were fallen and to repent.

There are millions of people claiming Christ neglecting this loving money and material things believing God is blessing them but He only blesses us with our needs.

1Ti 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

1Ti 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

That is not love.

1Co 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

1Co 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
1Co 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Charity, love in action, is greater than faith, and faith works by love.

Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

If a person hates, and does not want sin, and allows the Spirit to lead them they can fulfill the law.

That includes all the commandments Christ gave His disciples. It does not mean that Christ created a replacement law that cancels the Ten Commandments.

In fact, Jesus said:

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

So the phrase “law of Christ” should never be used as a vague excuse to throw away God's commandments. If we want to know what the law of Christ is, we should simply ask: What did Christ command us to do?

His commandments are all things He gave us to keep.

Christ said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God, so the Law of Christ is in complete accordance with everything that God spoke to Moses. Likewise, Christ spent his ministry teaching his followers to obey the Law of Moses by word and by example, so that is the Law of Christ.

The Law of Moses is perfect (Psalm 19:7), it is of liberty (Psalm 119:45), and it blesses those who obey it (Psalm 119:1-3), so James 1:25 speaking about he perfect law of liberty is not saying anything about the Law of Moses that wasn't already said in the Psalms. In James 2:1-11, he criticized them for committing the sin of favoritism, so he was not limiting what he was speaking about to just ten of God's commandments. The reason why the commandments to love God and our neighbor are the greatest two commandments is because they are inclusive of all of the other commandments, which is why Jesus said in Matthew 22:36-40 that all of the other commandments hang on them.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has the character traits that the Law of Moses was given in order to tech us how to embody and the way to love Him is by embodying His character traits, such as the way to love justice is by being a doer of justice, the way to love holiness is by being a doer of God's instructions for how to be holy as He is holy, and so forth. So the goal of everything that God has instructed is to teach us how to love different aspects of His character traits, which is why the Bible repeatedly states in both the OT and the NT that the way to love God is by obeying His commandments. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact likeness of His character (Hebrews 1:3), which he embodied through his works by setting a sinless example for us to follow of how to walk in obedience to the Law of Moses, so the way to love the Son is exactly the same as the way to love the Father.

Scripture is precise about what "the covenant" originally meant at Sinai, and that precision matters for understanding what gets renewed and what doesn't.

God's own naming convention is explicit. The tables of stone are called "the tables of the covenant" (Deuteronomy 9:9, 11), and the content written on them is called "the covenant" itself: "And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments" (Exodus 34:27-28). Moses says it again plainly: "he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone" (Deuteronomy 4:13).

This is distinct from the broader law Moses wrote afterward — the statutes and judgments covering sacrifice, civil order, and ceremony. That book was placed beside the ark as a witness: "Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee" (Deuteronomy 31:26). Only the Decalogue itself went inside the ark (Deuteronomy 10:4-5).

"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel... not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt... The covenant "in the day I took them by the hand out of Egypt" is the Exodus 19-20/34 giving of the Decalogue — the very tables just discussed. So the contrast Jeremiah draws is most precisely a contrast in location and inscription, not content: the same commandments, moved from stone to the heart. The new covenant does not discard the Ten Commandments; it internalizes them.

Christ said: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled" (Matthew 5:17-18). In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus was not asked about which were the only laws that he has for us to keep but about which commandment was the greatest. All of the 613 laws are either in regard to how to love God or how to love our neighbor, which is why Jesus said that those are the greatest commandments and that all of the other commandments hang on them, so the position that we should obey the greatest two commandments is also the position that we should obey the commandments that hang on them. If someone thought that they only needed to love God and their neighbor, so they did not need to refrain from committing idolatry, kidnapping, or favoritism, them they would have an incomplete understanding of what it means to love God and their neighbor and the same is true for everything else in the Law of Moses. The greatest two commandments are much easier said than, so thankfully God gave us the rest of His commandments to flesh out what it looks like to correctly obey them. Someone who was correctly obeying the greatest two commandments would be indistinguishable from someone who was correctly obeying the rest of the Law of Moses because they would both be following the same example that Jesus set for us to follow. Moreover, the way to obey the greatest commandment is essentially by being zealous for teaching obedience to Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).

Jesus also said that if your eye offends you, pluck it out. New covenant, new life and new law. The difference between you and me is that I follow the whole counsel God, not just the bits that suit me.

Yes. Some here ignore the truth that we die to the law. It's not unusual. Most Christians cling to to the law as some kind of spiritual life jacket, as if agreeing with the law enables them to keep it. God did not throw Noah and his family life jackets. He enabled them to build an ark. No doubt some of those perishing hung onto logs or floating debris in order to survive. No one could survive for long enough to escape.
