In honor of Zaoman's corageous blog posting about no-fap November, this is being posted on open forum to try and attract more men to the challenge, and to show others they aren't alone in striving for purity.
Some say it's a myth, some say it's a reality, but either way I have not found enough peer-reviewed scientific literature to completely back it up. However, it does seem to hold true. There is a documented 24 hour cycle where men produce the highest levels of testosterone in the morning (which explains a certain early morning phenomenon many men wake up to regularly). Also of interest, men produce the highest level of sex hormones in October (regardless of climate or hemisphere), so November is right during burn time fellow challenge participants. Another tidbit - according to that link, male testesterone levels oscillate as often as every 15-20 minutes!
But the 72 hour cycle theory varies. Some say 3 days, some say 5, but the theory is that if a man does not get release within that time frame, his body is going to compel him to seek it out (in some form or another). I have found this to be true. If you starve yourself in that manner, the first few days are going to be very difficult - several days in your body is going to start yelling at you that even the trees look attractive, go take care of this "problem" already. There may well even be physical discomfort.
This is because the male organs produce certain products which have a two week expiration date. These are actually produced daily. If they are not released, they will build up. More activity drives even more production. So with no activity, it's going to be a rough week or two.
The upshot? On the back side of whatever discomfort and frustration may arise, production will have slowed and it makes it much easier to control your thoughts and drives.
And no worries, there are two ways that the body deals with this unwanted product. One is that it is urinated out, and the other is known as a "nocturnal emission." The latter is very unlikely to happen if you've gotten your thought life in order and your dreams are as well contained as your waking moments are.
If you want to talk about this in more detail without offending the fairer sex (or young children), join us in the Men's Discussion Group. There you can use slang terms and more detail, and you'll have other brothers in Christ who are going through the same thing.
