there are still Christians today that trace their roots back to John the baptist. Mandaeans i believe.
Surely the concept and command to water baptize came from heaven. So why are many not following the command to have their sins remitted in water baptism in the name of Jesus?
Angel told John's father:
"And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Luke 1:76-77

The Lord Jesus Christ Himself told us as to which Name we are to be baptized into. It is implied in Matthew 28:19 that it is the Name of God (the triune Godhead).
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
All performed water baptism references indicate the name of Jesus was used. Also, Jesus opened the disciples understanding prior to His ascension:
Luke 24:45-47
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Peter gave specific instructions regarding when and how sins were remitted while in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost:
Acts 2:38-39 (Jewish)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:12-17 (Samaritans)
But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

Acts 11:13-14
And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
Acts 19:2-5 (Disciples who did not realize they had to water baptized in Jesus name)
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ananias' instructions to the Apostle Paul of what was required of him prior to beginning his ministry:

Not only that, Mark says you must believe AND be baptized in order to be saved. Doesn't that show that water baptism is required for salvation?
In normal circumstances it is right to be baptized in water but there are extenuating instances such as the thief on the cross...…. Some say many are baptized by desire to be so.
Me, I liked it being baptized being like our Savior in that regard, and it seems any who believe Him shoud feel the same...…..God bless all, baptized or not………..but if not, try to get it done. Love in Yeshua...j

So you are promoting the false notion that the water of baptism is for the remission of sins, when Peter and Christ tell us that REPENTANCE (inward) is for the remission of sins.
Anyone on either side of this debate is partly in error. Since error is error, there is no dfference in partly and fully.
No one in the love o Jesus Christ would ever dny entrance to our Family in Yeshua simply because they, for one reason or another have not yet been baptized..

I did because I wanted to do as Jesus did…...I did, I am happy, but my realzation of being saved came with the infilling of the Holy Spirit……..to argue baptizm is kind of moot. There are people who were saved yet not baptized inthe Word, and all know this.

The thief on the cross was under the Old Testament covenant because Jesus had not died, been buried, and resurrected yet.
The New Testament water baptism is a God ordained component of a believer's spiritual rebirth. According to the Word, the believer is buried (spiritually) with Jesus in water baptism performed in the powerful name of Jesus Christ. (Romans 6:4 and Col 2:12)

Notice John preached after repentance that the Baptism was for the remission of sins:
Mark 1:2
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Luke 1:76-77

How does one follow Jesus in the regeneration? (spiritual rebirth) By following His example of being water baptized. (Matt 3:16)
Titus 3:5-6
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Surely God is Love. And He alone knows all.

My guess is that you attend a church belonging to the Church of Christ or similar? They are well known for their insistence on the requirement of water baptism.
Baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. This is being baptized in the name of Jesus is the power of Jesus. We are baptized when we hear the gospel and believe .The gospel and not water is the power of God unto salivation.
Water baptism has a different understanding having to do with a ceremonial law .
I would offer that water baptism does not replace anything.
From my understanding. Many refuse to acknowledge the key in understanding water baptism in respect to the affect that the "time of reformation" had on it as to what it performed.
The fifteenth century reformation seemed to be greater attention from the discussions I have been in with others. It was the great time of tribulation, the time of Jacobs trouble for the Jew .Greater than any time before or after. It is still doing its work of brining division .
From my experience it is all but forgot about and therefore removing the purpose as to what it was intended to do.
Water baptism has its roots in a old testament ceremonial law used as a shadow up until the time of reformation . This is when a member as a Levi had a personal desire. And not a sign as a confirmation he had the Holy spirit or was being filled. But again a personal desire to become a priest and administer the works . All from the tribe of Levi were not Priest .But all Priest on the other side of the reformation were of the Levi family. Other tribes were not given the responsibility.
These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. Hebrew 9 :6-10
It was the context of the conversation in John 3 below. The Jews knew according to law a person must be of the tribe of Levi as was John. But now John baptizes Jesus from the tribe of Judah bringing great tribulation to a Jew who was trusting in their flesh could profit for something .
Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” John 3:25-26
This brought in the new order of priest as a kingdom of priest after the manner of Melchizedek. Men and woman alike from all the nations of the world calling them and us kings .
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrew 9 :11-14
Hebrews 5:10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Water bapitism today carries the same idea. When a person desires to be a member and get the gospel out into the world they are shown as kings and priests sent as Ambassadors from the kingdom of God not of this world.
