The average person you come across on a day-to-day basis...they do make me smile. Typical comments from them:
1. She/he is "religious". What they mean by this of course is that the person they are referring to is a Christian. I then explain that Christians on the whole don't like being called "religious" because to them religion is just a set of rules. Not meaning to offend any Roman Catholics who may be reading this but this TO ME this is what the Roman Catholic church is all about - rules.
Oh yes and 2. When you say you aren't going to church one week - yes just one week they say "oh you will never be forgiven for that" LOL and I explain that again rules do not apply and there is nowhere in the bible that says one has to go to church in order to be saved.
There are many more examples of the way Mr/Ms secular thinks so I thought I'd start a thread and you can add your experiences of the way they think.

So, over to you...

People forget about God. They don't think about God. They don't think much about: "Where did we come from?" and "Where are we going?".

From an early age, we look around us and easily say to ourselves: "Everybody else is doing (or not doing) the same things".

Are we accountable to God at the end of our lives for deeds done (and not done) during our lives or not?

Some say "No".

The Bible's message would say "Yes".

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ...- 2 Corinthians 5:10

I've been thinking about this just recently and I came to the conclusion that we are in fact taught atheism by society, at least I believe I was. Although from an agnostic background I have always felt uncomfortable with not knowing God, I always felt that Christmas was right and Xmas was wrong, I always felt guilt when I knew I was doing something God wouldn't approve of. I think as I child I was persuaded by my peers to dismiss Him. I wonder if this is the case for all non-believers...or simply the case with me. Doesn't society reject God in favour of freedom to do as it pleases? Freedom from rules - sexual freedom?

Anyway this is slightly off topic, the thread is more about the things people say.

Listen to other people but decide on your own to do what you believe is good and best even if you must walk alone.

I have a sister who is a secular humanist. She has been twitting me about my faith since I got saved 34 years ago.

Her big objection to Christianity is that Jesus was never a real person. I know many secularists who say this. They say the Bible is just a made up book, too.

I wish they could read "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. The trouble is, my sister and others do not want to read a book that gives evidence that Christ not only lived, but was the Son of the Living God!

Both Tacitus (Roman historian) and Josephus (Jewish historian) who lived at the same time as Jesus and after both mention Jesus in their histories. That confirms Jesus was a real person. As for the deity of Christ, well that takes a revelation from God!

Sadly, I got very fed up with my sister this year, and called her on her constant mocking my faith. Now she self-righteously won't speak to me. I guess more prayer? Sometimes a heart is very hardened. God has put Christians in her path everywhere, and she appreciates them, but says they are believing a lie!

That is what bugs me about secular humanists!

Hmm yes I have a son just like your sister and it's tough when he visits. It seems that non-believers aren't content to leave us alone, it's the constant chipping away at our faith. Do they know you have to wonder. I have the book The Case For Christ and also The Case For Faith but I have yet to read either of them lol.

As for Jesus' existence, there is more evidence for Christ than for Caesar yet no one questions his existence. I guess it's the resurrection that people have the problem with. I think even most atheists these days believe Jesus existed though.

My step father was trying to point out to me last night that Secular people try to figure out the "why's" of life, and religious people are more superstitious and are scared of asking the "why's".

It was a long story but that is the abstract...

I personally hate whenever a secularist declares that since their philosophy cannot explain something, then your's can't either by default, for instance: Solipsism is impossible with the Christian philosophy, but a secularist will not accept this because they cannot destroy solipsism in their philosophy.

I agree with Angela, my biggest hatred towards secularists, is their refusal to disprove their own philosophy... I have known many people who make blank statements such as "Jesus never lived" and when you provide evidence to contradict them, they say "well that's what the believers say" and when you provide secular evidence they either use an ad hominem attack, or they claim that this is not enough evidence.... And when you back them into a corner, they give the silent treatment and laugh at you... Some times it's like arguing with 5 year olds...

I also like what CS Lewis wrote about Jesus claiming to be the Son of God, how we have to either accept what He said as Truth, or that Jesus was a lunatic "on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg". Nobody can say Jesus was just a great moral teacher because He proclaimed things about Himself that no mere mortal man could claim.

People have to choose to accept Him as the Son of God, or else decide that Jesus was a madman or something worse. But as CC Lewis wrote, “ Let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

Yep Jesus was either Liar, lunatic or Lord. Why would He lie when a lie would ultimately lead to His death? He certainly didn't behave like a lunatic so that leaves...

My experience is John the Baptist has it right, ...

"John 3:31a He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth:

Jesus has and is the cure...

John 3:6-7
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

We can throw in Paul for good measure. ..

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I love it when people accuse Christians of being "puritanical".

I explain that most Christians do not hold to all the odd ideas that atheists call "puritanical",
because most of those things aren't in the Bible.
Then I really confuse them,
I explain that even the Puritans did not ascribe to most of those "puritanical" ideas.

This always messes up their minds.
Then they get a quizzical look on their faces and say,
"Then what DO Christians believe?"
Ahhh... now we're getting somewhere.

it gets me , as would said above, if you do not want to believe, then don't. but do not mock and taunt and name-call us that do. as to why folks are secular, I read this a long time ago. don't remember where or who said it. here it is : no God no consequences know God know consequences.

This. At the end of the day, people are doing what they think is right. The Bible proves that God wants things set for those willing to follow. How people interpret it is what gives the difference.

I saw a debate with Richard Dawkins where he got backed into a corner with too many facts, and even HE finally consented that yes, Jesus was a real historical person, lol.

You can actually find him saying that right on video.
It's pretty funny since he spent years claiming the opposite.

read foxes book of martyrs, and jesus freaks, and 'in my father's house' , and ephesians and first john,
then
see if you can still say that people in chruch are saved. (most aren't). i.e. the 'church' is worse than secular -

as it is written "judgment will begin in the 'house of God'(or the ekklesia/assembly) " .... (because it is written)

Yes.

In the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), five of the virgins were not truly ready and were shut out from the wedding.

In the seven letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3, there are threats and promises. The promises are for those who overcome. Not all will overcome.

"She doesn't like to have fun she's deeply religious" and "her parents are so strict they won't let her go outside the house at home"
Both of these things have been said about me but not to me. The second one is not true.

Not sure what deeply religious means. When they say I don't like having fun I do not know what they meant. I think they meant having lewd conversations. I like reading, dancing, sports like tennis and swimming and ice skating, I like theatre and dancing. I have friends who like these things that I think are fun. I have one friend who knows the people who say these things about me and they seem to like laughing at lewd jokes and looking at stupid things on their phones.

They say "who do you want to win the x-factor?" and I said "I don't know, I don't watch that" and then I hear they have said "her family are so religious she's not allowed to watch TV".

One person's "meat" is another person's "poison". Our kind of fun isn't the secular person's type of fun - this I have found. Call me weird but I do not think it's fun to get blind drunk and the next day awake with a sore head, full of regrets over things said and done and a poor memory of both. I wouldn't want to look at sordid images on my phone either or talk smutty language. I used to think some of these things were fun but I grew out of it. I'd sooner have e meaningful conversation with a Godly man than lust after a semi-clad muscle bound image of a male model with limited intelligence.

My good friend at work, who very well knows I'm a christian, getting to know me he's like "So being a christian and you despise homosexuals.." I'm like woah woah! What? I had to explain to him about judgements on others (speaking on my own behalf and that I cant speak for others) but I can see how God can use that to help them see passed the misconceptions! Lol
