The letter of the law does kill because it requires the death penalty when we break- the wages of sin is death, even in the NT Rom6:23, the only solution is to be in Christ- is someone in Christ breaking the commandments of God. No, this is a grave deception John14:15-18 John15:4-10 that the Holy Spirit would lead us to be unrighteousness and sinners breaking the holy law of God written by the Holy Spirit Exo31:18 from tablets of stone to tablets of the heart 2Cor3:3 Heb8:10 God New Covenant- His law becomes part of who we are- written in our minds so we know to do them, written in our hearts because we delight to do the will of our God by love Psa40:8 John14:15 Exo20:6

2Cor3:7 is speaking of the ministration, the wages of sin is death Rom6:23 so quite plainly by this passage 2Cor3:7 we know breaking the Ten Commandments is sin. There is no death penalty for keeping the Ten Commandments, only for breaking them. Jesus now ministers from a heavenly Temple, where there is still the Ten Commandments under His mercy seat Exo25:21 Exo31:18 Deut 4:13 Rev 15:5 Rev 11:19 or atonement seat. The law itself was never the issue, the law is perfect Psa19:7 holy, just and good Rom7:12 the issue is our sinful flesh that makes one not subject to the law of God Rom8:7-8. If we are under the ministry of the Spirit and are connected to Christ, there is no condemnation because we are keeping the commandments through our love, faith and the power of the Holy Spirit John14:15-18 Rom8:4 John15:10 its when we take our eyes off Jesus and start depending on self, we will fail every time.

Many professed Christians have not entered His covenant of faith because they reject what God placed on their hearts- His laws Heb8:10 Rom8:7-8 the Holy Spirit is calling us today to not harden our heart in rebellion and sin just as those who came before us Heb3:7-19. I guess its a matter of which voice one hears and serves Isa56:6- all is invited- all are called- few chosen because few respond to His knock.

2 Corinthians 3:6 - who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.
Why would anyone try to build their life on a foundation that the Bible says kills? Religious pride is probably a big component. It’s hard to compare yourself to others when you don’t have a checklist to hold over their heads. Maybe they find it easier to find safety in following a set of rules than actually having a relationship with the King. Maybe they have fear of freedom and the unknown. A stone tablet doesn’t ask anything of the heart, it just asks for your compliance. Why choose something that kills over a free gift of eternal life?

@mailmandan , @Just_A__Follower this verse (2 Corinthians 3:6)I have seen it many times, and have explained it also many times, and will continue to do so., here is what I answered elsewhere :

The argument most people make from this passage goes like this. Paul calls the Ten Commandments written and engraved on stones a ministry of death and condemnation. Therefore the Ten Commandments are abolished and replaced by the Spirit under the New Covenant. That sounds logical until you actually read the passage carefully in its full context and then measure it against what Jesus said.

What Paul Is Actually Saying

First let us understand the context. Paul is not writing a theological treatise about the law. He is defending his own apostolic ministry to the Corinthian church against people who were questioning his credentials and comparing him unfavorably to others who carried impressive letters of recommendation. He is saying that his ministry does not need external letters of recommendation because the changed lives of the Corinthian believers are themselves the evidence of genuine apostolic ministry. That is the context. A personal defence of his ministry. Not a comprehensive doctrinal statement about the law.

Now look at what Paul actually says about the Ten Commandments written on stone. He does not say they were bad. He does not say they were wrong. He does not say they are abolished. He says they were glorious. He actually uses the word glorious to describe them. So glorious in fact that the children of Israel could not even look at Moses face because of the reflected glory that came from his encounter with them. That is not the language of abolishment. That is the language of extraordinary honor and reverence.

What Paul is saying is that the ministry of the Spirit under the New Covenant is even more glorious than something that was already glorious. He is making a comparison between two glorious things not between something good and something bad. The Ten Commandments were glorious. The ministry of the Spirit is more glorious. Both are glorious. One exceeds the other in glory.

Why Does Paul Call It the Ministry of Death?

This is the phrase that trips most people up and it needs careful examination. Paul calls the Ten Commandments written on stone a ministry of death and condemnation. But why? Not because the commandments themselves are evil or wrong. Jesus made that completely clear:

Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not come to destroy but to fulfil. (Matthew 5:17 KJV)

The commandments are not evil. They are the eternal expression of God's holy character. But here is the honest reality that Paul is pointing to. When God's perfect and holy standard, the Ten Commandments, is placed alongside a sinful human being with no power to transform that person from within the inevitable result is condemnation. Not because the standard is wrong but because the person cannot meet it. The mirror is not the problem. The dirty face is the problem. The mirror simply makes the problem visible and unavoidable.

This is exactly what Jesus demonstrated with the rich young ruler. He pointed him to the commandments not to condemn him but to show him where his heart truly stood. The commandments did their work perfectly. They exposed the idol of wealth that had a stronger hold on the young man than his love for God. That is the ministry of condemnation Paul is describing. The commandments show you where you fall short. They cannot transform you from within. That is not a flaw in the commandments. That is their God given purpose.

What the New Covenant Actually Does With the Commandments

Now here is where the passage must be read in the light of what Jesus and the prophets actually said about the New Covenant. Because if you read 2 Corinthians 3 in isolation you might conclude that the New Covenant replaces the commandments with something entirely different. But when you read it alongside what God said through Jeremiah and Ezekiel the picture becomes completely clear:

I will put my law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts and will be their God and they shall be my people.(Jeremiah 31:33 KJV)

Same law. Written deeper. Not on external tablets of stone but on transformed hearts by the Holy Spirit. The New Covenant does not abolish what was written on stone. It internalises it. It takes the same commandments that produced condemnation when placed alongside a sinful unchanged heart and writes them on a heart that has been genuinely transformed by the Spirit of God. The result is no longer condemnation but life. Not because the standard changed but because the heart changed.

And Ezekiel confirmed exactly what the Holy Spirit does in a transformed heart under the New Covenant:

I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgments and do them.(Ezekiel 36:27 KJV)

The Spirit causes you to walk in God's statutes and keep His judgments. The Spirit does not lead you away from the commandments. He leads you into genuine heartfelt obedience to them for the first time. That is the ministry of the Spirit that Paul is celebrating in 2 Corinthians 3. Not the abolishment of the commandments but the supernatural transformation of the heart that makes genuine obedience to them finally possible.

The Letter That Kills

The phrase the letter kills but the Spirit gives life is perhaps the most misunderstood phrase in the entire passage. Most people read it as meaning the written commandments are dead and the Spirit replaces them entirely. But that is not what Paul is saying.

The letter he is referring to is external written law applied to an unchanged heart without the transforming power of the Spirit. When any law, however good and holy, is applied to a person who has not been genuinely transformed from within it produces only condemnation and ultimately death because that person cannot meet the standard in their own strength. That is the letter that kills. External law without internal transformation.

The Spirit gives life because the Spirit transforms the heart from within so that obedience becomes natural and genuine rather than forced and external. The Spirit does not replace the commandments. The Spirit makes it possible to keep them from love rather than fear, from genuine desire rather than external compulsion. That is the life the Spirit gives.

Jesus described this same reality when He talked about the vine and the branches. A branch that is genuinely connected to the vine produces fruit naturally and abundantly. Not by straining and striving but by staying connected to the source of life. The fruit is the same fruit the law always required. Love, honesty, faithfulness, purity, rest in God. But it comes from within through the Spirit rather than being imposed from without through external law. That is the difference between the letter and the Spirit. Not two different moral standards but two different sources of the same holy fruit.

What Jesus Said That Settles This Completely

Now here is the thing that closes this discussion completely. If 2 Corinthians 3 truly meant that the Ten Commandments were abolished and replaced by something entirely different under the New Covenant then Jesus would have said so. He had every opportunity. He addressed the law repeatedly and directly throughout His ministry. He never once said the commandments were being replaced. He said the exact opposite:

For verily I say unto you till heaven and earth pass away one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18 KJV)

And He tied love for Him directly and inseparably to keeping His commandments on the very night He established the New Covenant with His own blood:

If ye love me keep my commandments. (John 14:15 KJV)

The New Covenant was established at the Last Supper. And in the same conversation Jesus said keep my commandments. The New Covenant and the commandments are not opposites in the mind of Jesus. They are inseparable realities that exist together in perfect harmony.

The Honest Conclusion

So here is what 2 Corinthians 3 is actually saying when read carefully in its full context and measured against the words of Jesus and the prophets.

The Ten Commandments written on stone were and are glorious. So glorious that Moses face shone with reflected glory after receiving them. But applied externally to an unchanged sinful heart they produce only condemnation because no sinful person can meet God's holy standard in their own strength. That is the ministry of condemnation. Not because the commandments are wrong but because the human heart without the Spirit cannot genuinely keep them from love.

The New Covenant is more glorious still because the Holy Spirit transforms the heart from within and writes those same commandments on a transformed heart enabling genuine heartfelt obedience for the first time. The letter that kills becomes the law of love that gives life because the same standard that once condemned is now written on a heart that genuinely desires to walk in it.

The New Covenant does not replace the Ten Commandments. It fulfills them in the deepest and most glorious way possible. By writing them on hearts that love God and making obedience to them the natural fruit of genuine relationship with Christ rather than the impossible demand of external law applied to an unchanged heart.

That is what Paul is saying. That is what Jesus confirmed. And that is what Jeremiah and Ezekiel prophesied centuries before either of them wrote a single word. The law and the Spirit were never meant to be in competition. They were always meant to work together in exactly this way. The Spirit producing in a transformed heart what the law alone could never produce in an unchanged one.

The Substance is screaming at you, "I’M STANDING RIGHT HERE," but you are still staring at His shadow. You keep quoting Hebrews 8:10 to prove the Ten Commandments are written on your heart, but you conveniently skip verse 9 where God says the New Covenant is NOT LIKE the one He made at Sinai. If it’s not like the old one, why are you insisting on the same old rules? God writes the Law of Love on our hearts through the Spirit, not a 3,000-year-old checklist that Paul calls the ministry of death. His shadow can’t save you. You can’t have a relationship with a shadow. Hear His voice and turn away from His shadow.

If we take your logic and James 2:10 together, you are living under the death penalty unless you are 100% sinless. If you’ve ever had a single unloving thought or failed at one point, your own foundation condemns you to death. Why stay under a ministry of condemnation when the King is standing right there offering you a life that the shadow could never provide?

I haven't skipped the verse, I am looking at all of the context.....

God clearly said He would not alter the words of the covenant Psa89:34 which are the Ten Commandments Deut4:13 Exo34:28 not a jot or tittle. Mat5:18

So the words did not change, what did change? Lets let the Scripture interpret Scripture because it is a new covenant and not the same.

Heb8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

What was wrong with the first covenant? The promises. The people promised to keep the covenant, but they failed their promise Exo19:8

Otherwise God would have never changed the covenant- because that was never the issue, the issue was the people broke their promise and did not continue in it.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD:

So the New Covenant is not based on new words as God promised but on better promises of what HE DOES...

I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

It still has God's Laws but now established on the better promise of what He will do. Man on their own trying to keep God's laws will fail every time. Man with the power of the Holy Spirit can overcome sin. John14:15-18 The New Covenant is no longer external but internal and Jesus showed and example of this right from the Ten Commandments- He came to magnify His laws Isa42:21- place them in our hearts and minds, showing us that if our inside is changed- it would reflect the outside. If our heart is changed from thoughts of anger and contempt towards our neighbor thou shalt not murder would automatically be kept - remove the temptation of lustful thoughts thou shalt not commit adultery would automatically be kept, because our heart is changed right where God placed His laws - refusing to accept the law of God in our hearts Rom8:7-8 we are still walking in sin and Jesus plainly taught breaking or teaching others to break the least of these commandments quoting from the Ten Commandments is the path that leads to sin and Judgement Mat5:18-30 laying aside the commandment of God for mans traditions makes ones heart far from Him Mat15:3-14 because it rejected the New Covenant promise of God's laws transforming us from the inside out.

For verily I say unto you till heaven and earth pass away one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18 KJV)
Exactly. That closes the discussion out. Till all be fulfilled. He fulfilled it. He said Himself “IT IS FINISHED”. Are you calling Him a liar? The debt is paid, the contract was satisfied. Furthermore if the stone tablets were still to be the foundation, do you honestly believe that God would not have preserved them so that we could still have them today? He allowed the shadows to vanish because the SUBSTANCE is here.

He related it to heaven and earth, not the Cross. It is finished is about the earthy temple veil tearing and being done because Jesus ministers from a heavenly Temple not made with human hands. Heb8:1-5 Heb9:23-25

Not all is fulfilled and there are two conditions in Mat5:18- heaven and earth will pass- its still here- therefore not a jot or tittle can pass from God's holy law and ALL, not some is fulfilled, which Jesus plainly said He did not come to destroy the law or Prophets which would include all the prophecies of His Second Coming yet to be fulfilled. We have not been judged yet James2:11-12 Mat12:48 Rev11:18-19 Ecc12:13-14 therefore not a jot or tittle can pass. Removing the law doesn't remove it, it just covers our sin which is not a good spot to be in come Judgement day Pro28:13 Exo20:6 Heb10:26-30

Nor does man have the power to change what God deemed as unchangeable. Psa89:34 Mat5:18-19

Once God Blesses, its forever 1 Chron17:27 and man cannot take away God's Blessing Num23:20 God blessed the Sabbath day Exo20:11 and blesses the man who keeps it Isa56:2. We can't take away God's blessing, we can only forfeit our own, which I would not advise

Psa 37:22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,
But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

Yes, but again you interpret Matt. 5:18-19/NT in light of Psa. 89:34/OT.
If you would do the reverse you would arrive at God's change from the OC to the Gospel.
Going forward using your hermeneutic arrives at heresy akin to the Judaizers referred to by Paul in Gal. 1:6-12 & 5:1-12.

Hebrews 8:13. Quit trying to make the new covenant an addendum to the old one. Your argument is that the new is not like the old actually means the new is exactly like the old but with some additions. God didnt simply give the old covenant a fresh coat of paint, HE REPLACED IT. A shadow is the absence of light. The shadows are no longer because the Light is here.

God already explained it, if you think the NC is not God's laws in our hearts and we can worship other gods or murder our neighbor or break the least of these commandments the opposite of what Jesus said and this is God's will for His children, I pray that works out for you.

Yes, or rather moved forward from it to the Gospel after having fulfilled the OC

The everlasting gospel is to still worship our Creator. The God who made and rested from His works on the seventh day Sabbath,

Rev 14:6 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people—7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

No wonder why God said Remember- because the majority has replaced worship to God with another as we were warned Dan7:25- God personally called everyone to worship and serve Him Isa56:6 the LORD of the Sabbath Mat2:28 because whoever we obey is who we serve Rom6:16

I guess it will be sorted out soon enough. Today we have time to change our minds- once Jesus returns our decisions final Rev22:11

It’s like a mortgage: the bank says 'not one penny of this debt will disappear until the house burns down or the loan is paid.' Jesus didn't wait for the house to burn down; He stepped up and paid the entire balance. When He said 'It is finished,' He was handing us the deed. You’re still sending checks to a bank that already closed the account. The It is Finished is the word Tetelestai which means paid in full. Jesus didn’t give a down payment. He paid it all. You’re acting like he said “it is started” instead of “it is finished”. Jesus also doesn’t say that the law remains until heaven and earth pass away AND all is fulfilled.

@GWH
I meant to add this idea that there are two gospels one in the OT one in the NT is not Biblical

Gal 1:6-9 says there is only ONE Gospel
Gal 3:8 says "The GOSPEL was preached to Abraham'"
Heb 4:1-2 says "The GOSPEL was preached to US JUST as it was to THEM also"

Maybe that’s your problem. You have to hang on to rules because you don’t understand love. Where do you get worshipping other gods and murder out of a heart of love? You also like to just throw that “God’s commandments” phrase around to avoid distinguishing between the old law and covenant being the Father’s commandments and the new law and covenant being the Son’s commandments.

I want to love God how He asks Exo20:6 John14:15 1John5:3 John15:10 instead of depending on my own heart which will deceive us every time. Jer17:9

People try to remove God on what He said is love to Him and our fellowman and make it about what we "feel" instead. Its like being married and doing everything for your spouse because you have love for them instead of what they ask. Its a selfish love.

You're trying to connect two different things that God didn't. its fine if you wish to believe God ended the commandments to only worship Him and not murder our brother or break the least of these commandments despite clear Scripture saying otherwise- Mat5:18-19 James2:10-12 Mat15:3-14 Mark7:7-13 Mat19:17-19 1John3:4 Heb10:26-30 Rev11:18-19 I guess we shall all find out soon enough Rev22:11, I would sure hate to be wrong about this.
Did you not have anything to say to the paid in full? Do you still claim that only some is paid?

You mention Jeremiah 17:9 to say your heart is deceitful, but you’re ignoring the New Covenant promise in Ezekiel 36:26 where God says He will take away your heart of stone and give you a new heart. If you still have a heart that wants to murder and worship idols unless a stone tablet stops you, then you haven't actually experienced the transformation of the King.

Its just another misunderstanding. Jesus paid the debt in full, many will never receive it because they refuse to have their hearts transformed by God and subject themselves to the terms of God promised New Covenant and they never enter it Eze 36:26 Heb8:10 by faith Gal3:26-29 Heb4:2- they are too focused on self Rom8:7-8 John3:19-21 Mat7:21-23 instead of God's will Psa40:8 God tells us how we love, serve and join ourselves to the LORD Isa56:6 but people want His blessings on their terms, not His Isa56:2, to serve them on their terms not His Isa56:6. God won't force us to join Him- He asks, we have to do our part. We can fall in the same example of disobedience Heb3:7-19 Eze 20:15-16 just as those did before us Heb4:11

Its time for me to move along- I wish you well.
