In Mark Ch. 5,
we are told of Jesus casting out an unclean spirit (Legion) out of a mad man who lived in tombs. There is much to be said here and learned. My own personal opinion is this was a show of force by God after Jesus had been tempted by the Devil; Jesus had already healed people and done some miraculous things , but this was different.
First off, the death of over 2000 animals of a herd or flock of any kind would have traveled like wildfire! 'Oh my God, what did they die of, do i need to protect my animals? These things would have traveled like a flash mob, and later the fuller story would be known. Second, a mad man who could not be restrained by man or chains was mad whole and sent home to his friends and family to testify of this glorious thing. Thirdly, this would have cost the owner of the swine a fortune! Maybe speaking here of the price to be paid.
Was this a sign to those of Old Covenant Israel, of things to come to this perverse and unclean generation? They thought the Gentiles (Nations), were less than dogs compared to them, had they now became as Swine in God's eyes?
I don't believe that the swine were there by chance in the Word of God. Swine were unclean and neither their blood nor meat were accepted by God in the Tabernacle or Temple worship.
When the swine died were the unclean spirits trapped in bondage until the time of their judgement, or were the loosed to roam in dry places?
The thing that i find most interesting, is the symbolic imagery of the unclean being cast into the unclean! Is this symbolic of the death of those who die unclean not covered and cleansed by the blood of Jesus; to either those back then or to us now?
Once several years ago I was called upon by my mentor to cast a demon(s) out of a schizophrenic and I did as my mentor asked and the man was healed and had to quit taking the psychotic medicine he had taken for much of his life. Because now it made him deathly sick when he took it. The next week his testimony was that he had never heard the birds sing because there had always been voices in his head as long as he could recall. He was amazed and so thankful, from then on as far as I know, him and his wife got up every morning, had coffee and would set and listen to the birds sing before they would do anything else. This man and wife never left my mentors ministry where ever they went; so I can see why this man Jesus freed was so grateful and wanted to follow Him.
But why the unclean cast into the unclean?
