Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 - July 4, 1826) considered the Declaration of Independence his greatest achievement. It marked the beginning of self- government in America, kindling a flame that he believed would eventually light the world. But the Declaration was a personal achievement for Jefferson as well, a masterpiece of eloquence that still inspires us today.

Near the end of his life, Jefferson explained his goal in writing the Declaration of Independence. In a letter to Henry Lee, May 8, 1825 he stated:

"This was the object of the Declaration of Independence. Not to find out new principles, or new arguments never before thought of, not merely to say things which had never been said before; but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject, in terms so plain and firm as to command their assent, and to justify ourselves in the independent stand we are compelled to take. Neither aiming at originality of principle or sentiment, nor yet copied from any particular or previous writing, it was intended to be an expression of the American mind, and to give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion. All of its authority rests then on the harmonizing sentiments of the day . . .",

The last letter that Mr. Jefferson ever wrote was in acknowledgment of an invitation from the city of Washington, to take part in a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In this, the wisdom that comes with death guided him into a singularly happy formulation, the clearest and most forceful that he ever made, of his lifelong contention "that the mass of mankind was NOT born with saddles on their backs, nor a favoured few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God".

Then, almost at once, his last illness came upon him. As he grew weaker, it became evident that his mind was being much revisited by events of half a century before. On the night of the third of July, he sat up in bed, went through the motions of writing, and said some words, only partly intelligible, about the Revolutionary Committee of Safety. He seemed to wish to live until the Fourth, and when told at last that it was, he appeared satisfied. He died painlessly at one o'clock in the afternoon, July 4, 1826, about five hours before his old friend and fellow, his partner in the writing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, another great defender of liberty, signer of the Declaration, and our 2nd president .

It is the "tone and spirit" of Jefferson's writing that make the Declaration of Independence something more than a statement of political principles. Jefferson was the apostle of a society that constantly responds to changes in the world, a society open to new possibilities, reminding us not so much of what we are as Americans but of what we can be.

The Declaration of Independence is TIMELESS in the statement of the inherent rights of all mankind.

This is THE TIME in history when the Declaration of Independence should again be shared with all, especially with our youth, as if it were a new presentation of self-evident truths. This reading and the message is exceptionally appropriate today in these troubled tyrannous times.

"We were given instincts to help us survive in life. However, when our abundant instincts or desires far exceed their intended purpose, and motivate us to act blindly, or make us willfully demand that we be supplied with more satisfactions than are possible or due, they then become character defects."

"Please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our troops in all our services, ground troops, sailors, airmen, wherever they may be."

"God, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen."

Of all the gifts we could give them, prayer, our respect and our support, are the very best ones.

Lest we forget!!

'Most humans are so lacking in common sense and self-determination that overcoming the obstacles seems almost impossible. For years we have spoken with persons who have volunteered to try to overcome some of these problems and prevent the coming chaos and disaster. Hundreds of thousands of humans here on earth carry an extra 'spiritual' component that could be termed 'alien' to this planet. Whether they know it or not, they have entered into an agreement with the Creator and volunteered to be His Teachers. Many of these 'volunteers' are only partially aware of what they have volunteered to do, others are not. Those who are not, remain 'clouded' for their own safety. In a domination-based society, major changes against the system are dangerous. Thousands of persons who differed enough have wound up getting themselves eliminated in one way or another. The ironic part of all this is probably the fact that the many 'elite' power wielders and even religious groups who only 'think' they are smart enough to escape this problem are so myopic in their projections. They cannot see their own danger, for what they give must return.'

Expect miracles of change in people's lives. Do not be held back by unbelief. People can be changed and they are often ready and waiting to be changed. Never believe that human nature cannot be changed. We see changed people every day. Do you have the faith to make those changes possible? Modern miracles happen every day in the lives of people. All miracles are in the realm of personalities. Human nature can be changed and is always being changed. But we must have enough faith so that we can be channels for God's strength into the lives of others.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may have the faith to expect miracles. I pray that I may be used by God to help change the lives of others.

"Spirituality shall be defined as a sense of connection that gives meaning and purpose to a
person's life. Spirituality is unique to each individual, and refers to the deepest part of you.
Your spirit provides you with the revealing sense of who you are, why you are here and what

your purpose for living is."

'There are no political or theological solutions to spiritual problems.
The ONLY solution is the TRUTH.
Remember, If the Creator put it there, it is in the right place. The soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears.
I know that All must be brought into the Sacred Hoop for it to be mended. I often wonder how we will bring those who do not see even the simplest of Circles into the greatest Circle of all.
Then I remember it is a thing that has been promised by Spirit.
That is how I know it will come to be.'

"When you mix politics and religion, you run the risk of looking like complete hypocrites.
Our current political climate is a perfect example of this.
God made us who we are so we could make known who He is. Our identity is for the sake
of making known His identity.
At the heart of Christian meaning is to receive a new identity. In Christ
we do not lose our true selves, but we become our true selves, only in Him.
We cannot experience anything greater than the fullness of union
with Christ. Nothing reaches higher or is more spiritually comprehensive.
Christ in our life, not only the promise of it in heaven, but the
down payment of it by the Spirit now, as He lives in us. His joy becomes
our joy, His love, our love, His peace, our peace, and His strength, our strength.
'Praise God'

"Our sensitivities were given us out of the Creator's love, to protect us in danger, to brighten and enhance our lives, to give us the feelings that we call emotions, to be able to sense the pains, the joys, the thoughts, the emotions and feelings of our brothers and sisters everywhere, to share with us the beauty of his total creation, to let us experience His great love for us.......
Sometimes we don't appreciate our gifts, misconstruing, manipulating, misapplying the message which the Creator has sent us through our senses to give us happiness and joy and knowingness and freedom in life."
'Praise God'
