lots of people think tongues of angels means angelic languages. but if that were true it would mean that tongues of men would mean human languages. But angels all speak God language. So,tongues of angels means angels speaking tongues. I've seen this.
the context of the word ' Tongues ," Unknown tongues," tongues of Angels ' has to be and kept in context as the passage presents it. the word in every verse in the New testament is if kept in context = organ in the mouth or langues . the context for 1cor 13:1 in ref: Angels is langues

You say you believe “the perfect” is the completion of Scripture. Would the Corinthians have understood this though? Was there any mention of a collection of New Testament books or a New Testament canon anywhere in the context of 1 Corinthians 13? This idea is completely foreign to the context. If there had been, and if Paul made it clear that the last book of the canon would be written in AD90, would it have been persuasive to argue: “We know that love will never end because it will last more than 35 years”?

It is rather clear from other parts of the epistle that this interpretation of 'the perfect' is wrong. In the first chapter, Paul writes, "So that ye come behind in no spiritual gift, waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." During the time they are waiting for Jesus to come back, Paul doesn't expect them to lack any spiritual gift.

Also, Paul has 'long thoughts' going through his epistles. He'll refer to later themes earlier in the epistle. Consider some topics raised in I Corinthians 13 compared with the subject matter in chapters 14 through 15.

I Corinthians 13 I Corinthians 14-15
Tongues and prophecy------------------------------>Tongues and prophecy
The coming of the perfect-------------------------->The state of believers in the resurrection

The context requires us to understand that the perfect is the age to come. You wanted us to consider the views of the Reformers. When considering the “completed canon” argument, Calvin wrote in his commentary on 1 Corinthians, “It is stupid [sorry Wolf, his word, not mine] of people to make the whole of this discussion apply to the intervening time.”

The time before either the return of Christ or the believer's death in Calvin's thinking. I don't see why he'd mention death. That sounds like RCC traditional influence.

Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones writes of another difficulty with your view: “It means that you and I, who have the Scriptures open before us, know much more than the apostle Paul of God’s truth. It means that we are altogether superior even to the apostles themselves, including the apostle Paul! It means that we are now in a position in which ‘we know, even as also we are known’ by God. Indeed, there is only one word to describe such a view, it is nonsense.”

Very great point. Before the perfect come, Paul's speech, thoughts, and understanding were like a child's. After it comes, he will be like an adult. So if we have the perfect, Paul's knowledge when he wrote the epistle was like a child compared to our much superior spiritual understanding. We don't become perfect in our adult understanding by reading kindergarten books about Jack and Jill. The idea that the Bible is 'the perfect' spoken of in this particular passage is rather insulting to the Bible if you think about it.

And yes, we dont have the experience and knowledge as Paul had. But he revealed what he should reveal. I dont know he knew about that what God revealed to John in revelations, but since we have the canon we have the full will from God to us.

If Paul's knowledge is childish in comparison to ours, since we have scripture, then we should all fully understand all the mysteries he understood. And if he were the man caught up into the third heaven, we should know what he saw, too.

The fact of the matter is that individual believers, as we read Paul's writings, can gain deeper and deeper insight into what he was saying all the time, progressively gaining a better understanding of what he knew. I'm sure many other posters have experienced this reading Paul's writings and other books of the Bible. This is inconsistent with the idea that his understanding was childish in comparison with ours.

Some Pentecostal groups going so far to say, that without speaking in tongues a Christian has not the Holy Spirit, means is not a Christian.

That is a very small minority, generally those who are from the Oneness movement that deny the Trinity. The

Well what we can see, is that speaking in tongues has ceased after a while. It was not used from the official church. But we found it in different groups like the Montanists (in minor Asia and Northafrica).

That's not totally accurate either. Ireneaus lived around 200 AD, and he was certainly seen as a champion of orthodoxy, writing against the various heresies. He wrote of brethren who spoke in tongues, raised the dead, prophesied, had foreknowledge, cast out demons, etc. He even considered rejecting the use of the gift of prophecy as one of the characteristics of the heresies.

And when we found speaking in tongues ore prophecie in church history after the early church record, it was always connectet with sects, groups with non biblical teachings, and in the Mystik f.e..

If you do a bit of reading, there are occasional references to it among more mainstream church men. Btw, I read a blog that recorded that one of Calvin's friends wrote of Calvin praying in some language he was not familiar with. He was concerned that he may have been praying in a pagan language, a Canaanite language, perhaps. As far as earlier history goes, if church liturgy did not make room for tongues and interpretation or for the operation of the gift of prophecy, it makes sense that it would be pushed to the fringes, and seldom recorded.

In the newer church history we found it by the early Quakers(Edward Burrough), among Mormons; Irvingians (New apostolic church; Church of Jesus Christ of latter - day saints;

I recall reading in The New Charismatics II of speaking in tongues in a Methodist revival in either 1801 or 1802 near the University of Georgia. Aside from beliefs about apostleship, Irving and the Catholic Apostolic Church's beliefs were probably fairly mainstream. Their beliefs about apostles was the main point of contention others had with them, probably, that and perhaps their eschatology. There were also 'gift people' in Maine who were reported to have spoken in tongues and exercised other gifts in their churches in the 1870's.

Also we find speaking in tongues as esoteric speech in greco-roman literature (sometimes called as angelic divine language)
"According to Dale B. Martin, glossolalia accorded high status in the ancient world due to its association with the divine. Alexander of Abonoteichus may have exhibited glossolalia during his episodes of prophetic ecstasy.[SUP][15][/SUP] Neoplatonist philosopher Iamblichus linked glossolalia to prophecy, writing that prophecy was divine spirit possession that "emits words which are not understood by those that utter them; for they pronounce them, as it is said, with an insane mouth (mainomenό stomati) and are wholly subservient, and entirely yield themselves to the energy of the predominating God."

This seems rather tenuous at best. Is there any evidence they called this glossalalia? The oracle at Delphi was supposed to have muttered something only the person that received the message could have understood in some myths. At certain times, the oracle may have been huffing volcanic gases that seeped up into the shrine there.

'Glossalalia' has been redefined by academics, too, to refer to some kind of incoherent speech that doesn't mean anything. In the Bible, languages understood by the listeners were also called 'glossalalia'. Nowadays, some academics would call that xenoglossia. There is no reason to think that the glossalalia of the apostles was the same thing as the utterance of pagans in ecstacies.

Also you find speaking in tongues in paganism and shamanism, in spiritistic groups; in Hinduism (India), in voodoo(Haiti);

Again, there is no reason to think this is the same thing. I've heard people try to compare it to Buddhist throat singing, but it isn't the same, and different parts of the brain go off, I've read.

What then was the source of speaking in tongues in Montanism? A very big group, believing in Jesus Christ with strange teachings and false Prophets? probably exist from 170 till 4th ore 5th century. Was it the Holy Spirit who gave them the gifts of prophecy and speaking in tongues?

I don't know. It could be the whole group was way off. It could be that the movement in the east led to some interest and seeking God for genuine manifestations in the west. The movement did not split from the mainstream church in all parts of the west like it did in the east. We should be open to the idea that Montanus could have also gotten a bad rap and that some of his sayings were distorted. Tertullian became a Montanist at some point. I found his arguments against widows and widowers being allowed to marry based on supposed Montanist revelations to be concerning.

But we should also be aware that if one actually reads the writings of Montanist's critics, repeatedly they affirmed the contemporary gift of prophecy. This is certainly true based on the writings compiled by Eusebius' in his Ecclesiastical History. They would affirm prophecy, give examples of recent prophets, and then argue that Montanus was prophesying by the wrong spirit, not according to church tradition.

Eusebius recorded a debate from much later, after Montanus, Maximilla and Priscilla had died. A man from the Montanist group argued that the gift of prophecy ceased with Montanus. The man from the main, regular church argued that the apostle taught that prophecy would continue until the Lord returned. Maybe he's referring to I Corinthians 1:6 or interpreting I Corinthians 13.

Apparently, the Montanists were the first to argue for cessationism based on I Corinthians 13, seeing Montanus or the revelations that he ushered in as 'the perfect'. The orthodox believers believed that prophecy continued until the Lord returned. Some of Irenaeus comments may refer to Montanism, accusing someone of the irremissible sin for calling a man the paraklete, for example. But Irenaeus considered rejecting the gift of prophecy in his day and age to be a trait of the heretics.

Whats with the denominations ( i speak from germany) which prooved this in 1907-09 and came to the conclusion its an different spirit. Where there all wrong?

This was a sad declaration. But look at the state of the German state church since? Has it been a powerhouse of orthodoxy and spirituality? The irony is that some Germans cessationism wanted to cast out the Pentecostal spirit. But Jesus identified casting out demons as a miracle. And performing miracles is contrary to cessationism.

I believe it is biblical to pray for people to receive that gift as indicated in the book of Acts

however, pounding on folks and telling them to just start making sounds is not a good route to follow

I was by myself when I received that gift, after reading a book about a couple who had been introduced to the possibility of the the gifts of the spirit still being in operation, and so they sought God and received

Pretty much the same in my case...I was raised in a church that denied all of it...said it had ceased and died with the Apostles..however, for some strange reason, LOL!...God kept baptizing folks in that church and sending speakers who testified to the reality of the Holy Spirit still operating in dispensing the gifts

You have to ask questions, IMO, when you see such conflicts and ask yourself why and above all else, seek God who does not hand out stones when someone asks Him for bread...

Hi ember., good post. I was raised in a church that denied all of it too. They believed the "perfect" was the Bible finished/completed. And yet like today., how do people explain the Scriptures saying otherwise and the believers who speak in tongues, who believe in healing and see healing, who see the Holy Spirit move mountains in their lives? It cannot be explained away.

Like you, I believe it's Biblical to pray to receive this gift and to also pray for others. It's a step of faith for Christians like me to even pray for such a gift. We were told all our Christian lives this is of the devil and those "christians" who say they have this gift are deceived and blind and looking for signs and being led down the path of destruction as it says in the last days ....itching ears.....turning towards fables...... etc... etc.... using those verses and applying them to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible insists we study and read and experience and study and read and experience. Taking the verses and comparing them with one another and HOLDING to the FACT of God's love for us In Christ. The Holy Spirit in us working and showing us those rivers of living water flowing continually from our inner most being.

One thing I've learned and decided to hold to is God is holding me personally responsible for my faith. If I don't step out and receive what He has for me., He will not force it on me. So today I have much more faith than before and He is taking care of me much more than I ever dreamed. Money is not a worry nor is retirement or health or housing. These are things that were my main focus most of my life and now I see them as provisions God has for all of us when we allow Him to provide.

These are things the unsaved worry about. Sickness and old age and insurance, job security. What shall we eat what shall we drink what shall we wear. I'm finding if I want to take those worries on, He will let me and I will sink. But His Word tells me to trust in Him with all my heart and do not lean unto my own understanding. To acknowledge Him in all my ways in life, for all those things in life that everyone is concerned about. To Jesus take care of them and lead me beside the still waters and He will also keep restoring my soul and my peace while I'm learning.

It can't matter what other believers think of you or what your family thinks of you when you have decided to follow Jesus. It's truly calling those things that cannot be seen as if they are really seen.
That is the walk of the believer. Until I was willing to do this., not much more happened in my relationship with Jesus. The Holy Spirit was there but I was not willing.,and He never forced me. I had to step out in faith first.

Please study the verse you have quoted. It does not say any gift has ceased, but the gifts will cease when there no longer is need for them leaving only the eternal gifts of faith, hope and love..........

Tongues will no longer be necessary, for we will have a pure tongue, Zeph.

Prophesy will cease for all will have been met.

Healing will cease becase we will all live forever.

The gift of knowledge will not be necessary for we will all understand.

Faith, hope and love will always be, for we will never be without the need of having faith and hope in our Father, after all, He is God, not we. Of course love is everlasting and most important.

God bless you and keep you close always...........amen.

Prophesies have ceased. Is there any Moses or Elijah around? No, why? Because God's word is now complete from Genesis to Revelation, and we no longer need a prophet to tell us what God says. We need ministers to tell us what the bible says, but we have the complete Word from God, therefore what was in part (prophesies) have ceased. Tongues have ceased. Miracles have ceased (though we still have prayer).

If you read further it says faith, hope, and love remain. In order for something to remain, something else had to have been taken away. So what was taken away? Where there are prophesies they will cease, where there are tongues they will be still. For we know in part, and prophesy in part, but when completion (of God's Word) comes, what was only in part will disappear.

Completion has come, what was in part has disappeared.

I forgot to mention...

The reason we know this is not speaking about after the judgement day, is because after these things are taken away, faith, hope, and love remain. Who needs to believe while in heaven? Who needs to hope for heaven when they are already in heaven? This shows its talking about the timeframe of living on earth.

You are repeating back to me in part what I have posted, as though I did not already indicate he same.
Perhaps you need to reread my post on your misunderstanding of what the verse upi jave coted ,eams-

Also reread the text in the Bible, what comes before it and afdter it...........

Is there any language that God can't understand? No, He can read our thoughts. Is there any reason we need to speak in a tongue to make it a heavenly language for angels to understand? No.
If i speak in a language and no one in the room can understand it, than only the angels and God hear me and that is useless for any people around me. Angels can understand any language and God reads the heart so speaking in tongues is a Gift to help us communicate with other people.
1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Co 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Is there any reason to doubt God is the same yesterday, today and forever?

I have been given such nonsense here as tongues are no longer because people speak so many languages adn God understands all of them. Have there not been many languages since Babel? Tongues was given and is for the edification of the souls. If you read with understanding you will find that tongues, though not understood by the speaker is for self-edification.

Even a sigh while in prayer is taken as the mind not having the words to utter so the Holy Spirit takes over with a sigh or a groan coming from the soul. Do not dismiss this, nor make light of it. That would be scoffing.

Someone has posted that "prophesy is completed." Now how foolish is that? There are many levels of prophesy. It is not simply sitting down and predicting events to come, it is also praising God, and the Spirit of prophesy is the confession of Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior and God Almighty............all of which may be learned by reading the Word, studying the Word.

God bless all who are in Jesus Christ,,,,,,,,amen.

Well...it looks like we all still need prophecy in our lives while on this earth as the scripture below tells us what this prophecy does for us. This foolishness that we don't need any of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit because we have the bible is complete nonsense. The bible is not God. It's a book with many writers inspired by the Holy Spirit that leads us to Christ and testifies of Him.

Tongues have ceased. 1 Corinthians 13:8

no they have not and neither have the other gifts

that is anti Holy Spirit teaching and at your age, you have obviously been taught what you state

I would urge you to study the scriptures...and pray with a sincere heart to the Lord that He lead you by His Spirit

frankly, I fear for those who reject the gifts and reject what is plainly written in favor of the teaching of men which is basically anti-supernatural (remember we are talking about God and EVERYTHING about Him is what we consider supernatural in our fallen state)

no one can say Jesus is Lord without the power of the Holy Spirit making that real in their life...we are past words in the 21st C...it's time to put on Jesus Christ and get real with God before the deception in the world overtakes the church more than it already has

I am not personally referencing anything about you here other than addressing your comment and the general state of unbelievers who call themselves Christian

Then you do not believe 1 Cor 13:8 the three sign gifts ceased the rest of the gifts continue but the sign gifts ended with the completion if the NT cannon of scripture.

Hi ember., good post.

personally, I think if you don't accept the work of the Holy Spirit, you are, by default, believing a lie presented by seducing spirits who want a powerless church and a bride of Christ wearing used clothes and army boots...you can quote me LOL! I say army boots, cause it's all about their own efforts and they believe the lie that satan is a toothless lion instead of the devouring, rampaging, flesh eating dragon that he actually is. BTW, I am only addressing you here, so I hope no one takes offense....I don't care if someone else reads it, but I am talking to you...cause I think that's ok.

Like you, I believe it's Biblical to pray to receive this gift and to also pray for others. It's a step of faith for Christians like me to even pray for such a gift. We were told all our Christian lives this is of the devil and those "christians" who say they have this gift are deceived and blind and looking for signs and being led down the path of destruction as it says in the last days ....itching ears.....turning towards fables...... etc... etc.... using those verses and applying them to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

yeah exactly...so ask yourself what spirit would encourage that kind of thinking and understand why I say what I say...I have certain gifts...we all do....however, I do believe that speaking in tongues is for everyone...but I do not believe you are not saved if you do not speak in tongues...there is so much wrong teaching out there...including by Pentecostals and charismatics...that people do not know what to believe anymore

The Bible insists we study and read and experience and study and read and experience. Taking the verses and comparing them with one another and HOLDING to the FACT of God's love for us In Christ. The Holy Spirit in us working and showing us those rivers of living water flowing continually from our inner most being.

yes...and prophesied about in the OT as well and evidenced in this C ... we are living proof...I honestly do not know how people make it from day to day without the Spirit of God and the keeping power of God...seems the flesh is very strong in some folks LOL!...me? I am an accident waiting to happen LOL!

One thing I've learned and decided to hold to is God is holding me personally responsible for my faith. If I don't step out and receive what He has for me., He will not force it on me. These are things that were my main focus most of my life and now I see them as provisions God has for all of us when we allow Him to provide.

I can agree...you don't know how God does what He does...but he does and provides. and he sure enough has a way of getting your attention and taking your face in His hands and saying....'hey..I'm over here...stop looking over there'

These are things the unsaved worry about. Sickness and old age and insurance, job security. What shall we eat what shall we drink what shall we wear. I'm finding if I want to take those worries on, He will let me and I will sink.

absolutely..Peter had no idea what a great illustration he was providing when he took his eyes off Jesus on the stormy waters...so we have stormy waters in our lives...and Jesus holds out His hand and it's up to us to take it

23rd Psalm and I don't know if you know this or not, but eastern shepherds actually walk in front of their sheep...they don't drive them...or at least that is how they used to do it

It can't matter what other believers think of you or what your family thinks of you when you have decided to follow Jesus. It's truly calling those things that cannot be seen as if they are really seen.

faith is not the easy substance nor is it the end focus as some try to make it...faith leads to a reality that we cannot create

That is the walk of the believer. Until I was willing to do this., not much more happened in my relationship with Jesus. The Holy Spirit was there but I was not willing.,and He never forced me. I had to step out in faith first.

I was always afraid of being asked to do some bizarre thing to 'prove' myself...but I think for the most part that is just coming from the other side as if I can't create enough doubt all on my own haha

it's really and truly all about keeping our eyes on Jesus

Dear Presidente, no doubt the spirituell situation in germany is more then poor! it´s said that today only 3% of germans believing in Jesus Christ as the bible says! (I belongend 25 years of my life to those who not believed in Him)
But´s no answer to my question. I am also not saying that the Lord is not working today through miracles ore healings, ore special revelation of himself in mission situations.

Which pentecostal spirit you mean? from 1906? The Holy Spirit every beliver in Jesus Christ receives since Pentecost.

That would of necessity produce a homologous understanding of the scriptures. One Holy Spirit, one Savior Christ and one revealed word of God.
