Wives, or traditional wives, often do not start outright having a home, as you say, you rented and then saved for your own home. That was the whole point, saving for a home of your own.

Children aren't raised well if they have to keep moving around all the time, it's not stable and nowhere they can call 'home'.

Nobody likes to be the new kid in school all the time and having to change their address, but the reality is landlords can and do raise their rent thus making it unaffordable to live somewhere and you can't buy a house outright that you rent. Some do rent to own, but the landlord has to be quite generous to allow that.
