She is a big fan and so am I of shutting down the Department of Education.

Ever since the department of education was established in 1979 the quality of US schools has gone downhill. We had the best education prior to this, now we are a joke. Our scores are quite low, but what really is astounding is how bad the US education system is per $1, we have to be one of the absolute worst school systems worldwide when compared with how much we spend.

Then what really, really shows how bad the return on investment is, don't look at the suburbs where parents are far more involved, simply look at the inner city school system. That has to be the absolute worst return on investment of any school system anywhere on this planet.

If you look at our wealthiest suburbs those schools can compete with the best schools worldwide, but when averaged in with inner city we drop to #38 and that does not take into account how much money is spent. So if instead of letting our wealthy suburbs raise our average, just look at inner city public education as a return on investment and it is one of the absolute lowest in the world if not the lowest. Once you take into account money we are doing worse than countries that spend a third of what we spend on education.

Get rid of the Department of Education.

I would also point out that the Department of Education is unconstitutional. The US constitution is very clear, any authority that was not designated as belonging to the federal government in the constitution belongs to the States. There is nothing that designates authority over education to the Federal government so then it belongs to the States.

This is not theoretical. There were three founding fathers who helped write the US constitution that were themselves very much involved in education. They subscribed to three different theories of education and they started three different Universities. So not mentioning education was not an oversight, it was intentional. They understood there are different theories, there is no "one size fits all" and the last thing they wanted was the Federal bureaucracy taking charge of something so important.

I would add that with ChatGPT education will completely plummet. Teachers, principals and those overseeing the schools are not talking about this because they realize it is an easy way to keep graduation rates high. Many teachers are "encouraged" (coerced would be a better word) that if a student is failing the class simply give them an essay to write to raise the grade to passing. How easy is it to write an essay with ChatGPT. It used to be you could make the criteria of the essay so specific the kid wouldn't be able to simply cut and paste from the internet.

But now you can give the follow instructions to ChatGPT

Give me a 2,250 word essay on the primary factors leading to the Revolutionary war, reference three historical books on the subject and write using a sixth grade vocabulary.

So then you just take whatever criteria the teacher gives you and add "and use a sixth grade vocabulary".

one of the biggest issues with the dept. of education is that is basically run and controlled by the teacher unions.

they will howl with indignation...
