Can Religion Help?
John Blanchard

“Supporting scripture for this thread is: Isaiah 64: 6”

Encyclopedia's of the world of religion and ethics list hundreds and hundreds of ways in which men and women have tried to satisfy their religious longings and feelings. They have worshiped the Sun, Moon, Stars; earth, fire, and water; idols of wood, metal and stone; animals from fish, birds, cows, rams and other animals which they think is sacred. They have worshiped countless of gods and spirits which have been the produce of their own perverted imagination.

Others have attempted to worship the true God through a vast variety of sacrifices, ceremonies, sacrament and services. But ‘religion’ however sincere, can never solve man or woman’s sin problem, for at least 3 reasons I can think of.

1. Religion can never satisfy God. Religion is man’s attempt to make himself right with God, but any such attempt is futile because even man’s best efforts are flawed and so are unacceptable to God. The bible could not be clearer; all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. God demands perfection; religion fails to meet that demand from God.

2. Religion can never remove sin. Your virtues can never cancel out your vices. Good deeds can never remove bad ones. If a person gets right with God; it is not by works, so that no one can boast. No religion efforts or experiences; christening, confirmations, baptisms, holy communions, church going, prayers, gifts sacrifices of time and effort, bible reading or anything else can cancel out a single sin.

3. Religion can never change man’s sinful nature. A person’s behavior is not the problem, only the symptom. The heart of mans’ problem is the problem of man’s heart, and by nature man’s heart is corrupt and depraved. Going to church and taking part in religious ceremonies may make you feel good, but they cannot make you good. Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!

Some of the religious activities mentioned above are obviously ‘good’ in themselves. For example, it is right to go to church, to read the bible and to pray, because God tells us to do these things. But you dare not to rely on them to make you right with God. Not only are they powerless to do so; trusting in them actually adds to your sin and to your condemnation.

I always looked at religion as man saying, Hey God, Look at me and all I have done.. Don't ya just love me..

what the world perceive as 'religion' and what God perceives as 'religion' is as far
as the east is from the west..

JAMES 1:27.
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows
in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

there are several thousand denomination in our present, evil, world - if they are all going
according to James, then they are doing fine, but, we know the truth, they are 'false religions'
masquerading as the TRUE....this is so very grievous!!!!

I think religion helps... the lost see the effects of changed lives, of charitable works, see our devotion to our faith... religion, even if false, points to there being a God, and keeps ever present the reality that there is very likely something of great import missing in the lives of those who do not know God. That has to count for something :) Seek and you shall find!

Religion is man's attempt to control God. People want to be in charge of their lives. They want a god who does what they demand.

Are lost people more religious than saved people?

I find it harder to witness to religious people than to non religious or non churched people.

More and more of our youth have no knowledge of religion especially in relation to the bible.

For the cause of Christ

I would say most lost are religious...Buddhists, Hindus, Islamists,Jews, Pagans, Eco Earthers, and even much of the 'Christian/Catholic religious system. No wonder there's very little knowledge of the Bible amongst the lost.

Aren't these all pretty much saying the same thing?

IMHO - religion tends to be the opposite of relationship.

Amen, PB,

but, I do have a sympathy for those of us who are struggling and seeking -
as I can so relate tp my 'times past'....which led to my times present....

Yes, even though my first churches were 'non religious' ones, He evenually led me through the religious ones (for about 4 years) so I would truly see what I was taking for granite.

The word Religion has two sides to it. One is a pretentious pompous piety; a living of creed instead of a relationship founded simply in Jesus Christ. But Religion can also have a doctrinal aspect to it too. As an example, when we say, "Are you dieting?" What we mean many times assumpively is that is are we trying to lose weight, but the facts could also mean, we are simply eating and this is the list; period. Because everything, and anything we do in way of eating can be concluded as the diet we are currently partaking in. "Diet simply means what we are eating, despite it's optional meanings in it. The same can be said about doctrine. We all have doctrine in our lives it's just what it is as a result of what we do.Doctrine in Religion is not the importance of God but it is in the walk with Jesus. To be Religious usually means to have that pompous piety, but it is also safe to say that our religion is also only the doctrines or creeds found in the walk in faith with the correct foundation in Christ Jesus. In that way, placing the relationship to Him and God first, the other then has value. If it is the other way around, and creed takes the front seat in our walk, it is one of the things Jesus was angry about the most. Misrepresentation of Himself, thru a false reality of righteousness.

we hear you Cross,

even though our first 'churches' were instrumental in our drawing closer to Christ,
through their 'false religion' Christ used them to bring us to Him, for His own purpose,
reason, and thank God, He gave us the sense to follow and to reap....

And God is faithful to us even when we are about religious wrong perspectives. I know people in the wrong churches that God is faithfully loving them out of. I know people in the right churches that have been religious on their own merits in treating Scriptures creeds before the relationship found in real time with God thru His Son. It's that quality in the heart of God that causes Him not to deal with us according to our sins, or wrong choices even, or to retaliate against us according to our iniquities. It is God's faithfulness to us, even when we are not faithful. In fact, it is what love must always be when it meets the unlovely, the weak, the inadequate, the undeserving, and the despicable. God is willing to respond to need without reference to merit. It is unmerited favor.

It is good to fan the flames of godly righteous anger here, and to guard our hearts from becoming religious as we walk out of here as well. That we love beyond the wrongness of such religious improprieties. We must use this conclusion to pray intercessory prayers for the victims of such a grip of Religious fervor. May God grant them the same mercy He has granted me along life's way.
