Why has the US Post Office become so inefficient and waste so much money?

An example of what I mean is in my own county.
My county is about 590 square miles in area and has 16,000 residents.
There are 5 small towns in this county and each has a post office.
Two of these cities (one has 1100 residents and the other 500) share a border and their post offices are only one mile apart.
I live 12 miles from the nearest post office but my mail comes from a post office in another county 22 miles from my house.
I have a neighbor 1 mile south that gets his mail from a post office from another county 30 miles from his house.
A third neighbor 1 mile in west gets his mail from the post office 12 miles from my house.
These three deliver drivers literally pass each other as they deliver mail in my area.

If I send a letter to either of these neighbors, that letter has to go 150 miles to a postal center, sorted, sent 150 miles back before it can be delivered to my neighbor. Usually takes 7 to 10 days.

WHY?

One reason is post offices are like government installations and nearly impossible to close due to political influences. Your county could easily get by with just one post office instead of 5. The post office is inefficient because there is no real incentive to be efficient as they depend on the US government to bail them out when they run out of money.

The US postal service is the only faction of the government that takes in money. period. the reason that they loose money is that they charge us next to nothing to mail our letters across the world. Would you rather that they competed with UPS and charged their fees?

The biggest lost to the Postal Service is due to losing money on each Amazon package they ship. Makes absolutely no sense. The taxpayer is actually subsidizing Amazon's shipping costs. They need to raise the cost to reflect the actual cost to ship a package to include also a profit margin. Either that or get out of the shipping business altogether.

The IRS takes in money too. In fact, their sole purpose is to take in money.

This nonsense that corporate is somehow more efficient than government always amuses me. No, corporate is not more efficient. Corporates sole reason for existence is to make a lot of money for shareholders and CEOS etc. You know, those lazy people who sit in front of a computer screen all day gambling on prosperity or lack thereof. Any government organisation only need to break even, no more no less. The cheaper postage/energy/water etc benefits everyone, not some sleazy corporate raider with billions in his bank account already. I thought prosperity theology was debunked already, apparently not.

I know, and not only Amazon. UPS uses the postal service in situations as where they
have deliveries in the middle of no where. It's cheaper to use the post office. I've
had that happen when I was tracking a package. started out with UPS and I received it
from the USPS.
