What are all of your thoughts on video games, as a Christian?

I remember from my earliest moments in life, we had a Nintendo, then a Super Nintendo. Video games were a huge part of my early life. I even told my first grade teacher that I wanted to be a video game programmer when I grow up.

For the longest time in my adult life, video games and I didn’t really have the same type of relationship that we had as a child or a student.

I found myself slowly gravitating to video games again and I’m kinda excited to get back into them but I’m also wondering if this season is going to be too good to be true.

What are your thoughts? Are Nintendo games harmless? Is it just another form of entertainment and stories? Can it lead to anything extremely unhealthy? Is it a way of escaping reality? Can a man be in a marriage and be someone who plays video games? What are your thoughts on Christians in the video game industry and creating Christian based video games?

Just thought this would be a fun thread to talk about.

As for me, I have nothing wrong with video games in general. I play for the story, not the gameplay.

Where I tip out is when the story starts pushing things I don't agree with, like trying to assert that homosexuality is okay.

Shooting down WW2 Nazi's or the WW1 "dreaded Hun" on combat flight simulator occupied a lot of my time long ago, no more, didn't do a thing for ministry.

My childhood was defined by my love for Pokémon. Later, when I watched friends play World of Warcraft and then I stopped playing video games myself between 4th and 6th grade I realized how much time I had wasted---entire days wasted just playing a game that would give me nothing back. Instead, my mom started bringing home audiobooks, and we spent a couple hours in the evenings listening to Tarzan, Princess of Mars and other books like Acorna series, The Talents universe series, together which was way more inspiring for the mind then playing video games. later those series turned into classics like jane Eyre and there eyes were watching God then into Christian classics like CS Lewis

No wonder you turned out awesome, your mom poured His love into you not plugging you into an "electronic babysitter".

On this, and many other related issues, there is a very fine line between healthy MOMENTARY distraction and something more perverse. A round of golf is a great source of healthy distraction, it can revitalize and refresh our spirit; allowing us to get back into the real challenges with renewed vigor. It can also become yet another form of idolatry, allowing something to come more important than God. (Fishing was mine).

"Healthy" video games are neither good or bad, it's how we use them. A great topic or prayer.

I remember playing the Nintendo and Super, but the games were pretty tame. Then seeing Zelda becoming a gorefest of destruction, made me glad I quit. If I ever get a place, I'd buy the old games and enjoy Link once again.
 
I have played a few games over the years , morrowind , oblivion , Skyrim , civilization , heroes of might and magic . I enjoyed them all very much but lately I'm starting to feel my age , very tired at the end of the day . I love to read , especially my Bible but other stuff to and I'm finding as I get older that I need to prioritize what I do with my spare time , so games have taken a back seat for the last few years . They did help me get through lock down during the pandemic for sure .
I need time with my God and my Saviour more than anything else these last couple of years .

Only video game I ever played was Pong. From a biblical perspective I don't see playing these games as being sinful.

A Christian would take it to Him. He would never guide a person to a practice that is idolatrous or harmful, this advice is what an outward form of godliness type person might.
