Walking Blamelessly with God.

Dear Friends, when God Almighty appeared to Abraham, He gave him one simple command: "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be blameless." (Gen 17:1)

The Hebrew word translated "blameless" is somewhat ambiguous. It can
mean, variously: integrity, sincerity, upright, perfect, spotless, and zero
defects.

God set the bar pretty high for Abraham-- but God is God, and it would be
out of character for Him to dumb His standards down, i.e. He cannot require
anything less than excellence; and I think quite a few of us are okay with Him
that way.

Personally, I think that the only way that I can walk blamelessly before God is by realizing that I can't walk blamelessly
before God at all.

Only by faith in Jesus' work in me and His imputed righteousness... that Jesus is my covering... will God look on me and see Jesus.
And thus, consider me blameless.

• Luke 1:5-6 . .There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain

daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both
righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of
the Lord blameless.

The covenant that Moses' people entered into with God per Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy incorporated a very complex
atonement system; which no doubt Zacharius knew all about seeing as how
he was a priest. (Luke 1:8)

So then, "all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord" includes that
complex atonement system; which, though now obsolete, made it possible
for covenanted Jews to associate with God blamelessly.

NOTE: The covenant didn't apply to Abraham because it isn't retroactive.
(Deut 5:2-4, and Gal 3:17)

Well for me Christ already died for the sin of the world. Christ died I died.. Christ rose I rose. So right now I am righteous holy before my Father. I am in right standing (righteousness) not because I never sin or do any good works but because I simple believe in Jesus. Its what He already finished. Its why I can come boldly before Him its why I am right now seated in heavenly places.

Context.. well take James if we keep reading past verse 2 "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. "

Same with Psa 15 "One who walks with integrity, practices righteousness, who speaks truth from/in his heart. He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; "

Gen 17 1 some say "wholehearted" some say " walk in my ways and become blameless" "walk before me and be prefect" "be blameless".

Now me...I can not will not ever take His glory. I can do nothing. I am righteous holy because I believe in Jesus Christ.. as was Abraham because he believed God "And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. "

OT praise God its His word.. Christ came died and rose AMEN! So I can't walk or do anything to be blameless. Christ did it all. I believe in trust in Him. I will never take His glory and say I did anything. He did it all..without Him we cannot live right do right think right speak right. Like Abraham "And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. "

Of course, a big part of our continuing to walk blamelessly before the Lord includes the regular use of God's remedy for our ongoing sins (a point that I believe others have already mentioned above), as it is the means by which we are restored to full fellowship with the Lord (when we fail to walk blamelessly before Him), as well to regain the "joy" of our salvation.

Sinclair Ferguson may well be the greatest voice of the last 40 years. That's pretty good considering, though the visible church of this time has been morally decaying, there have been a fair number of voices still crying in the wilderness.

Thanks, all, for the responses. I think there are two keys to being blameless in the sight of God. (1) periodically asking for forgiveness/confessing our sins to the Lord (2) seriously striving, by the power of His Spirit dwelling in us, to avoid major sins.

Also, Prov 2:7: "He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless."

(1) blessings like success are promised to those walk is blameless
(2) one can still be saved without striving to be blameless, but that will please God less, lead to loss of rewards, and might lead to discipline from the Lord. See 1 Cor 3:13-15.

And finally there is the case of Job. The Word says he was blameless and upright before God. It says he was the greatest man of his time on Earth before God. What did he do right? (1) offered sacrifices for love of God (2) feared the Lord and shunned to do evil.

Job 1:

"IN the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

2 He had seven sons and three daughters,

3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

Well, yes, that goes without saying. The Word says, as we walk in the Light and confess our sins, the Blood of Jesus Christ His Son washes us from them all: "7But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." ( 1 Jn 1)

And yet, in the time of Job, we do not read that others were as approved by God as Job was. He alone was called blameless and upright, though there were surely other believers in God too. And God Himself bears witness of him saying: “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

As Job had his own reward for his faith and his blamelessness, likewise each believer will have it: "13each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." (1 Cor 3:13-15)
