I could probably go out and find a lot of this information myself, but thought I'd start here.

Does anyone know the history of many wedding traditions? Being an institution from God, it seems like a lot of the traditions surrounding it should also be (from God).

The rings - I seem to have a faint memory of this coming from a pagan tradition (maybe?)

The stag - If you believe movies, bachelor parties are wild crazy nights of debauchery; not really righteous.

The wedding party - They're mentioned in the Bible, anyone know the history?

The reception - Um... I've got nothing.

Any other traditions anyone can think of? Just curious.

The reception, as we know it today may have it's roots in the wedding custom of biblical times. In Jesus' day, marriages were arranged by a couple's parents years prior to the marriage. Instead of an engagement, there was a betrothal. During this time the community considered the couple as married even though it had yet to be consummated. During the betrothal period the groom to be would be preparing a room for his wedding day. Once the grooms father decided his son was ready, he would send for the bride. There wasn't a wedding ceremony as we know it today, while friends and family were celebrating the union, the groom would take his bride into the room he had prepared to consummate the marriage, and then the couple would re-join the party that was going on. It wasn't a ceremony that made people married, it was the physical joining.

When you look at that tradition in relation to how scripture talks about the church being the bride of Christ it is absolutely beautiful. Christ has gone to prepare a place for us and He is eagerly waiting for the Father to send for His bride to join Him.
