John 14:2 (KJV) In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Are “mansions” large, impressive houses, or are they something else, such as resting places?

My Bible says it differently:

In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? John 14:2 RSV

This is out of context, but I think my interpretation is that there are different groups of people, separate from each other, who serve the Lord. For example: Jews and Christians.

Rooms is the more accurate translation, koine Greek word there is μονή
monē
mon-ay'
From
G3306; a staying, that is, residence (the act or the place): - abode, mansion.
 and its root word is:
μένω

menō

men'-o

A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy): - abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.

this describes a place of residence, not a mansion as most may think , this word occurs 2 times in the NT and is also found in John 14:23 and is rendered "abode" in the KJV.

as for the spiritual application to this verse: suffice it to say that our Beloved Savior has provided everything we need now and abundantly provided for all in the new earth as well.

Rev 21:1
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Why did Jesus say "many" rooms, instead of "just one" big room for all?

Have you ever heard Christians say before, "I have a mansion in the sky"?

Friend, that is not what "mansions" is talking about here, however, it is even more beautiful than those thoughts of a large house in the sky. Let's take the word "mansions" as written in the Greek text. "Mansions" is "mone", # 3438 in the Strong's Greek dictionary, and pronounced, "mon-ay' ".

It means a place to rest and abide where there is no trouble.
This resting place is in Christ and the Father, the only place you'll find true rest and peace.

Exactly the resting place mansion in the sky :)

Here's just a amusing fictional thought each galaxy out there is a room a mansion within the big house the big mansion.

The Greek word there means 'abodes'. Because so many brethren refuse to study the OT Books, they don't know what those mansions are, and wrongly think they are in Heaven.

The New Jerusalem comes to earth, and Ezekiel 40 forward shows the temple complex layout for the time of Christ's future 1,000 years reign. The abodes of the priests are mentioned, and all of that layout is on earth for that time, in the area of the holy land. The tree of life and the River of the waters of life is also shown manifested there on earth in that time too.

That is what our Lord Jesus is preparing for those His faithful elect that will reign with Him over the nations in the near future when He returns to this earth to gather His elect.

The only problem you have with this is you are describing ONE place.........the resting place in Christ......yet Scripture/Jesus clearly stated MANY!

just saying

Thought it would get around to this........... :) Hey, you wanna be here on this new earth thing? Fine with me, I'm gonna be with Him in His Kingdom and it is NOT OF THIS WORLD.

:)

Hope you guys at least have a Taco Bell or Burger King or something

the New Jerusalem in Revelation is not a city for us to dwell in.
it is us.

there is no temple in the city because the city is a temple -- the temple in Ezekiel is figurative, though it may blasphemously be built one day on earth, it is not spoken of blasphemously in Ezekiel. it is us, again.

please have a look at 1 Peter 2:5 and Ephesians 2:22 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, meditate & pray for 3 hours, and then read Revelation 21 again.

do you really think that Jesus Christ will reign on earth in Jerusalem for 1,000 years with a temple in the same city offering up abominable, blasphemous sacrifices that spit on the one perfect atoning sacrifice of His own blood and body that He already made?

How about the next world?

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
(2Pe 3:13)

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. (Rev 3:12)

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
(Rev 21:2)

...at least a 'Star'bucks? LOL

As stated , many of the things illustrated in the scriptures [Old and New testaments] are figurative and must be properly discerned to gain the right understanding being conveyed by the Holy Spirit.
Such is the case in the use of the word "Mon-ay" or "Mansion's" in John 14:2 by the Lord.
What one must ask themselves is why would Gods creatures [The Holy Angels] need a house, for they are creatures whose life is within them [self sustaining] and have no need to eat or drink [physically speaking] and who never get tired or sleep or get sick or anything negative like flesh man has to endure.
Then if angels do not need houses, then what could the use of the illustration of "Mansions" represent.
One thing we all need is a body whether it be physical or spiritual, and as explained by the apostle Paul in 1Cor 15, we shall adorn a body in the eternity as determined by the Lord with one being of this and another being of that [figure of speech], so hope that the one you have is a Mansion.

God Bless

John 14:2 (KJV) In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Are “mansions” large, impressive houses, or are they something else, such as resting places?

House

oikia
oy-kee'-ah
From G3624; properly residence (abstractly), but usually (concretely) an abode (literally or figuratively); by implication a family (especially domestics): - home, house (-hold).

oikos
oy'-kos
Of uncertain affinity; a dwelling (more or less extensive, literally or figuratively); by implication a family (more or less related, literally or figuratively): - home, house (-hold), temple.

Mansion

monē
mon-ay'
From G3306; a staying, that is, residence (the act or the place): - abode, mansion.

menō
men'-o
A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy): - abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.

Like a family unit on earth, that dwells in a house,or whatever they dwell in,where they are all together, but have their individual rooms, and stay in one spot,it appears that is what is meant by what Jesus said, that they all abide in one house,as a family unit, which the Concordance states they stay in one spot.

But I do not believe that there is actually a house, with many mansions, and each saint gets their own mansion, for they have no need for such, but it is a reference that God's kingdom,His house,is a family unit, that is all together in one spot, and does not move here,or there, but all stay in the same place as a loving family unit.

I never really thought about it,but why does saints need individual rooms, for I do not see how that can apply, but Jesus pointing out that it is a family unit, and we are all together in God's kingdom, and a loving family, and not scattered here, and there, like a family with children, are not scattered here, and there,at least they should not be.

Rev 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
Rev 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Rev 7:15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

Here these saints are before the throne of God,and serve Him night and day in His temple, not going to an individual room, for what,to chill out,and relax, from a hard day of worshipping God,when they do not get tired, and they need privacy, when they are holy, and can never sin,for what do they need privacy for,and a room, when what does a room mean when it does matter about a possession there.

Marcello pointed this out,Why did Jesus say "many" rooms, instead of "just one" big room for all?

Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

I believe this could be a reference, not to an actual house with many different rooms, but that God's house,is a very big house, that has room enough for all,and never runs out of room,no matter how many people are in heaven, whether millions, whether billions, whether trillions, whether quadrillions,no matter the number of people,God's house has room enough for all people that want to be there.

It is like on earth,a family will usually but a house to suit their family size, and when the family extends to such a large size, they might have to buy a house that is bigger,to accommodate the extra people, and have room for that larger family,or anything on earth, such as school, business, and such, where the people expand, that have to acquire a bigger building,or perhaps moving the people to another location, and sometime people might be ousted from being a part of that group,to go to another location, for there is no room where they were originally at,and maybe ousted out of the group entirely no matter where they are at,or how many locations.

But with God's house it is not such, for it never has to move location, never has to be made bigger, but it can house everybody that is a part of it,no matter the size of the people, for in God's house, there are many mansions, and never runs out of room, even if it expands for a trillion miles.

The Norwegian translations says mange rom (many rooms)

I always imagine it as a long corridor with hotel rooms (but cosier)...
That being said, I sort of struggle to imagine being in heavens living room, yawning and saying "that's it guys, I'm going to bed" :p

the resting place sounds like a more plausible theory

When Jesus said His Kingdom was not of this... world, He meant this present world of today. In the 'world to come', there won't be a world like today anymore.

Christ's future Kingdom as written will be on this earth. Ezekiel 47-48; Revelation 21-22.

Something you obviously have not been taught from God's Word, is that the heavenly dimension is going to be revealed right here, on this earth, as God's new earth is where He said He is going to dwell with His servants. Even Ezekiel 47 shows God's River of the waters of life and the tree of life manifested in the holy land on earth (where is En-gedi?).

When Jesus spoke of The Father's "House", that is the layout in Ezekiel 40 forward which is on this earth. It is there called God's House.
