Hey Everyone,

For anyone who might get a rise out of the title, no, I am not actually going to steal a yellow dog, or, for that matter, a dog of ANY color. Rather, I'm currently with a friend I've known since I was 5 years old, trying to help her family with some things where I can.

The family dog is a yellow lab mix who looks something like this:

1781195679558.png

and is most definitely my friend's dog (she is his absolute favorite human.) "Woovy" follows my friend "Chloe" around where ever she goes, and even if he's lying near someone else, he will get up and zoom off the minute he thinks she is going somewhere or has come home. (For the sake of both my friend's privacy AND the dog's privacy, all names in this story have been changed!) (Woovy is a family nickname for said dog, but not the dog's actual name!)

With the family's permission, I have been regularly sharing my food with Woovy, leading him to hang around my place at the table often, and so I keep joking with Chloe that I am going to steal her dog (or at least, his affections.) The other day when she had to leave, he came downstairs and plopped himself right down next to me right away (which had never happened before!) He's come looking for me at other times, but never right away, and he rarely goes downstairs (usually only if Chloe is going there, too.)

I was thrilled, and sent Chloe a picture of him chilling next to me saying, "I have stolen your yellow dog!"

She texted back, "You DO know you're the only person in the house at this moment, right?"

WHY did she have to steal my thunder like that?!!

I told her that didn't count!! :oops::cool::ROFL:

I don't have much time left with them, but I am still working on "stealing the yellow dog," or at least, climbing the ranks to becoming Woovy's 2nd favorite human in the household!!

So... What do you think my chances are here?! (Please cut me some slack -- I'm very inexperienced with dogs and am learning as I go!!) :D

I would also like to know what your experience has been like with your own pets or those of your friends, family, significant other, etc., such as:

* In your household, which human did the family pet favor most, and why?

* If you weren't the favorite, did you ever wish to be? Was there ever a time when you were able to claw your way to the top spot in your furry friend's little heart? What were the reasons that your pet went from favoring one human to another?

* Have you ever become the favorite human of someone else's pet? (Such as a significant other's pet who wound up liking you more?) What happened if the friendship, relationship, etc. wound up not working out? Were you ever able to see that pet again? (I've known of some cases where the pet was given to the other person.)

* Were you ever tired of not being the favorite human of a pet (whether yours or someone else's,) and so you adopted another one hoping it would bond to you? What happened?

* What are your best tips for bonding with a pet? (Give me some hope here -- maybe I can sneak in a few of these moves at the last minute!) :p

I am also going to post a poll asking what my chances are of winning Woovy's heart! Be sure to come back and post your answers in the thread (and please make them as funny and/or heartwarming as possible, as I'm sure my Chloe will also find the answers to be quite entertaining!) :D

This is just meant to be a lighthearted, fun-to-read thread (although serious answers of pet/human bonding is most welcome!) Just for fun, answers will be multiple choice and publicly visible so we can see what others have to say! :)

But alas...

I must now to back to the very serious business of wooing Woovy's 4-footed little heart.

You give treats, but do you throw sticks?

You need to take Woovy for a walk and go to a stick library and get him to fetch sticks. If your friend Chloe lets you take him for walkies. Does he have a lead? Is there a park nearby?

Back in the day we had a border collie mix girl. My Uncle who lives next door got a girl dog who looked like a cross between a rat terrier and a box of lemons.

So we wound up with two dogs and Uncle Fred wound up with none. Naturally.

Excellent idea, thank you!

Woovy actually prefers carrying around his plush friends and is not into carrying around sticks or fetching.

However, he is extremely gentle with his little buddies. The last time I was able to visit was 6 years ago and he still has all the same plushies (intact!) -- some of which I think he's had even since he was a puppy!

He's 12 years old but you'd never know it, as he still goes up and down stairs like a champ!

Ok which one is his favourite? Have the favourite plushy always with you and Woovy will follow you around. Don't mention to your friend you are stealing it, you are just borrowing it and playing with it.

OOOHHH, Lanolin, you are sharing some pro-level tips here!! Thank you!! :D

Woovy has 4 or 5 plush pals that he seems to favor...

I wonder if anyone will notice if they "go on holiday" for a bit.

Come to think of it, I can't remember seeing any of the family members... Woovy seems to prefer to choose them himself.

Goodness!! He's definitely a very independent dog.

Trying to win over Woovy is starting to sound like even more work than trying to win over a date!

Well, for the most recent pets:
* In your household, which human did the family pet favor most, and why?
Well, I guess she wasn't a 'family pet'. I set out with the intent of having her be a family pet, you know so the kids could learn and have a little more responsibility (and so I wouldn't have to do all the care and clean up but could reap the love :p ) but from the day we brought her home and she was snuggled in my arms, my husband looked at us together and very firmly said "This is Mommy's bunny" and even though she loved other family members (and tolerated the rest), it was very obvious that she was my girl right up to the end.

What were the reasons that your pet went from favoring one human to another?
Well, with my husband his beard was her favorite place to snuggle up to when he held her, we always assumed that she probably felt like she was snuggled up to another rabbit there. And whenever I wasn't around to give treats and loves during the day, daddy was.

But then there were times my daughter was the preferred human. She has tiny little fingers with nice sharp nails. Perfect for scratching the top of her bunny head between those floppy ears.

Were you ever tired of not being the favorite human of a pet (whether yours or someone else's,)
Yes/no. When we got my daughters rabbit, I wanted to try and bond with her. Maybe not be her favorite human since after all she was for my daughter, but certainly wanted in on some of that special bonding... that rabbit wasn't having it (though we have a better relationship now).
and so you adopted another one hoping it would bond to you? What happened?
Well, we adopted another one (my girl) hoping it would bond with the first rabbit... yeaaaah... noooooo. That did not go over well. They ended up having to live in separate pens. But being that she was 'Mommy's bunny', she became very bonded to me.

Any 90s kids remember the dog from The Goosebumps intro?

Who else, but @seoulsearch, could make innocuous mention of a yellow dog and cause a grown man to hide behind his sofa! 🫣

YIKES!!!

I've always been a bit afraid of dogs because the ones I was around, such as the many dogs I encountered while having a childhood newspaper route, were the kind that barked ferociously, jumped on you (often gashing my legs or arms,) and came close to biting, but the owners thought it was cute and quirky without ever considering how terrifying it might be to a small girl.

The past few years, I've been around some very calm, sweet, often older dogs, and though I am allergic and don't want any pets for myself, it's made my visits with other people's pets a whole lot more enjoyable.

I will, however, take a hard pass on meeting the dog in @Kainos's post!!

I never watched or read Goosebumps, but a dog like that would DEFINITELY reactivate all my childhood fears!

I loved reading this, especially the part about the bunny snuggling safely in your husband's beard!!! How adorable!

This post made my day!

Thank you so much for sharing. :)

My friend Chloe was fascinated by the Dog Stick Library!!!

Are these common in the parks there? We don't have them here.

In some areas, people set Free Little Libraries in their yards for people to take and leave books, but unfortunately, we have never seen a Doggy Stick Library.

Update:

Last night Chloe and I were up late talking and Woovy came downstairs and laid on the floor between us.

I looked down and said, "HA!! I have stolen your yellow dog!! CLEARLY he's favoring me -- VICTORY is MINE!!"

Now technically, Woovy's lower body was right in the middle of us... but he had laid down his head DIRECTLY towards my side!!!

That MOST DEFINITELY counts as a win... Doesn't it??? Doesn't it?!

(C'mon, somebody throw me a bone here!) 🐶🦴😁

Dogs are incredibly loyal. I heard a story where a dog recognised his first owner years after last seeing him - he turned from fierce guard dog defending his current owner's property to rejoicing servant at seeing his old master again in an instant. Depending on the dog, your friend might always be number one in her eyes, but you might become number two. Food and kindness. ;-)

Not a chance. Every time we visited my in-laws, their poodle would follow me everywhere. When I sat down, she would plant her head in my lap. When we left, she would jump in the car and wait for me to pull off. As soon as I started to pull off, she jumped out the window and ran to her mama. As my FIL would say "close but no cigar."
