Back in the old days we'd get ten or twenty new members every day. Now we might get two. Are we doing something wrong, or is this the way it should be?

It seems like for every 2 new members 3 members leave. That's not a good trend. Does anyone know the criteria for being considered an active member? How much inactivity does it take to no longer be considered an active member? I pray that this site becomes a vibrant growing community of believers.

I think the problem is trolls, and if not trolls then .... eh.... people with too strong opinions :p
people get tired of it (whether it is here or elsewhere online)

Perhaps more and more people are just opting to remain a guest rather than joining as a member. All one need do is go into the Bible Discussion Forum or Christian News Forum to find plenty of reason not to wanna join. It's like Fight Club in there most days. :p

Even in a real life conversation with fellow Christians, people have those "this is just how it is" opinion. Even though they may not be biblically sound. I mean its just pride, people can't let go of their "great" ideas because they don't want to humble them selves to gods word, then your just left with an opinionated jerk.

Sometimes I have to take a deep breath before I start reading the responses to my posts.

I used to love internet forums but after a while I just found it became less appealing. I still visit a few forums now and then including this one but I stick to those topics that are clearly not debate threads. It's just not worth it. I gain nothing from it except frustration and resentment towards people I do not even really know. . I chiefly look for friendly conversation and to learn more about others. I would always rather look for peace rather than fight so I have learned to withdraw when such fights occur. I don't know if that is how other might be feeling and why they are leaving or why there are fewer new members. I can only say that is what makes me hesitate to come.

Debating theology is an interesting pastime. It is nerve-racking, yet I find myself drawn to it. I'm about to proceed to the Bible Discussion Forum. Who know what awaits me there?

Good question, been wondering that for a while myself. I think I noticed the decline in numbers begin after they introduced only paying members being able to PM. I think that's a big part of it. After all, it's supposed to be a chat site, so if you have to pay to chat, that's going to hit numbers. That's one factor.
Another is, as others have mentioned, the Bible Discussion Forum. It can be a miserable place at times where one can find plenty things, but not much Christianity. And I have to say, if I was a non-Christian coming in there to try to find out more about Christianity and the Bible I would run away and probably conclude that Christianity is nuts.
Thirdly is trolls. Enough said.

This is not a very welcoming site. There are two specific forums here that are a big turn-off to a lot of people because of the way "discussions" are conducted. I wrestled with the decision to join for months and only did so after I had a nice long talk with myself and told myself I wasn't going to let the membership drag me down into their bickering. Besides, what good does it do for anyone here to know where I stand politically or what theological folds I curl up with? None. It just invites trouble from people who think "I can correct them because they are wrong and I am right", and most of the time, that is NOT true.

It would be nice if the BDF and the Political forums were hidden by default. They are little more than viper dens anyhow.

It's not hip anymore I think. It's not only with this forum. Dutch forums 10 years ago would be thriving. Now there's just a few people. Don't know what people do now instead. Facebook is used a lot for evangelising and ministries, contact between christians, well, for the oldies. The young ones left and went to Twitter or something.

Facebook, twitter, messaging on cell phones and the like have probably all taken a bite out of chat sites memberships, not just this one. Also, more diversions then ever, like Netflix, etc. And after the Snowden reveal, maybe people are more wary of the govt watching every single thing online.

I hadn't thought of the government watching us. I would think they'd get very bored, though. There's a mountain of dialogue that takes place here.
