I have something to confess. I'm a 21 year old Christian male, and I'm doing something that many would consider "not waiting for God's timing"... I have an account on a Christian dating site.

Maybe it's because I wasn't raised in a Christian household, or because I wasn't told about "waiting on God's timing" as a youngster, but I just don't understand the whole "wait on God" mentality I often see in the Christian Singles section. Allow me to explain what I mean.

From what I've gathered, it's common to tell teens and young adults in the church to wait before getting involved in dating. When a person is a teenager, that's certainly credible. Let's face it, teen relationships just don't last all that long. Some do, but it's an exception and not the rule. Plus, during that age range a lot of drama and sex-related issues can occur. Having stayed single for most of my teen years, I avoided a whole lot of headaches that my peers who were in and out of relationships went through. Yet this seems to have turned into a sort of passivity among young Christians. "I'm not interested in dating," I read people say. Then in the same breath they add, "I'm waiting for God to bring the right man/woman into my life." And this, I think, is where the problem comes in. Young Christians are being told not to date, and to see the opposite gender as "brothers and sisters" in Christ. The result seems to be a paradoxial disinterest in finding a mate. Then they wonder why the years go by and they remain single.

Pardon my ignorance, but I must ask. I've noticed there are a lot of 30 and 40-somethings that are single. Perhaps they've had previous marriages that I'm not aware of. If you are of that age range, is it because you've never married and are still "waiting"? I respect your decision, of course, but I have trouble understanding it.

As the title goes, what exactly are you waiting for? The Perfect Mate to walk into your life? The notion that God will maneuver your life events to bring one special person to be your mate is nowhere to be found in the Bible. I'd also daresay it's borderline Calvinist, so I'd be surprised if anyone who isn't, say, Baptist or Presbyterian, believed it. Indeed, it seems that people who commit themselves to being inactive about finding a spouse will simply find themselves... without a spouse. That, and, I have a hard time believing there is such thing as that "one special perfect person" for me. Does God know who I will marry? Of course. Does he decide who I will marry? I'm not a Calvinist, so no. And what about when you do meet that "special someone"? Do you suddenly start get interested in dating? What if that "special someone" turns out to not be so special?

My belief is that God doesn't necessarily want us to sit around and twiddle our thumbs. Rather, we need to take the initiative. But it feels like I'm in the minority. And I'd like to get input from the opposite group. Wait are you waiting for? Why should I wait until the "right person" is in my life? How do I know it's the "right person"? Things of that nature.

(PS if I sound harsh, I apologize. I don't mean to, I just want to be direct about what's on my mind. I've wanted to post this for a long time, but haven't found the right words to express my thoughts.)

Shawn, I'm going to try and not write a book here, but this is one thing I am pretty passionate about; one thing that I have a fairly unique view of too it seems. :)

I spent several years waiting for God to show me His will through my teen years. He brought myself and another young woman from my church together. I spent a long time waiting for God to show me His will. Spent time alone in the woods with just God and finally got an answer. I dated her for about 4 years, I would have married her too.

Since then I ended up in another relationship, one in which I certainly was not seeking God's will. It taught me a lot, being able to compare the two relationships. So, I have done the 'waiting on God' and seen real results. It's not just an empty act.

Really, this was just background. Currently I am waiting on God, talking to God often, about what His will is for my life. I am happy single, I don't feel like I need a woman in my life. But there has been a girl in my life for several years now who I've been talking to God about. She's really special to me, but God has repeatedly told me 'no'. So, when I say that I'm waiting on God, I'm not waiting for Him to bring someone into my life, I'm not waiting on Him to tell me who I should marry. I'm waiting for God to show me what His will is for my life, whether it be with or without a woman. For now, the financial freedom and freedom to witness, that come with the single life, seems to be God's will for me. I am able to give both time and money freely to support those in need. So I am certainly waiting, but I am far from sitting around dreaming.

I have been up close and personal with this subject and I'm also young so I'm sure my answer will be much different than someone who is older than me. I didn't even have my first boyfriend until after I was graduated from high school. Not that I was against dating anyone but it was a small town and there were only a couple of christian guys and I didn't feel a connection with either of them. So after I got out of high school I went looking for someone to date but at the time I didn't want to wait for God to send the one he made for me I just didn't want to be single anymore. So obviously that didn't work out :) Honestly what has helped me with this and some of my friends also is asking yourself the question are you ready for the one God made for you? Maybe this is the reason you haven't met them yet. Maybe you or they need to go through some things before you meet each other. He has everything planned so it really isn't a matter of waiting for me it's a matter of getting ready and becoming the person God wants you to be so that whenever you do meet each other you are ready so spend the rest of your lives with each other. (or at least that's what I keep telling myself lol) Does this help? :)

LightningClap0002 and Robbinette bring up good points: You must be sure to continually seek God and also perhaps God wants you to learn a certain lesson (as a single person) before you get into a relationship with someone with the intent to marry.

I've simply never dated because there haven't been eligible people and also because I've never been asked. My high school had less than 150 people in it and there were literally no Christian guys in it. Oh, there were "Christian" guys, but none were serious about their faith. It was more of "Oh, yeah I believe in God. So when's the next party? I'll bring the kegs!" *facepalm*. Anyway. When I went to college, it was a private Christian university. It happened that most of my guy friends were already in relationships (and they were guys I wouldn't date anyway, though I love them as brothers and still do) or the ones that were single and I did like did not like me back in the way, not that I was that close with those ones. I tell you what though, I felt pretty hopeless after graduating and still having never been on a date since I just went for four years to a school with hundreds of Christian males!

Since I've graduated and moved and I'm attending a church that is being planted/brand new (I'm helping my parents and more on the team do this) and I'm the youngest there by 30 years, and also since I don't go out to bars, it's hard to meet Christian guys my age. I recently started going to a young adult Bible study that I just found out about, though my intention of going isn't to find a boyfriend but rather to make friends my own age while studying God's Word.

So when I say I'm waiting on God's timing, what I mean is that I'm waiting for God to bring eligible men into my life. Ha! I kid. Sort of. :P

That being said, I do agree with you. I don't believe in "the perfect one", or "soul mates". Out of the millions of Christian guys in a reasonable age range in the world, I can assure you that there is more than one that I'd be compatible with and click with in regards to dating and marriage. You're right, we can't just twiddle our thumbs and wait for our damsel in distress or Prince Charming. God wants us to follow Him in everything, in that the people we invest in for a relationship of that type should also be following Him, but I think He gave us brains and initiative for a reason. He is in control but He's not going to do everything for us!

I also don't intend to "wait out my days until I'm not single". I want to embrace all that I can now, learn all that I can now, no matter what! I find it almost degrading to think that I'm just "waiting" until I can "not be single anymore". I dunno.

Hopefully that all made sense. :)

Call me the master of cognitive dissonance, but I agree with Shawntc, but am operatively different.

Logic dictates that you are more likely to achieve something if you actively seek it.

That said, I have tried to ask many women out and simply don't find myself ready for it or accustomed to it.

I really can't say what I'm waiting for. As LightningClap said, it depends on what God wants for my life on certain periods of my life. I don't believe God throws people down from the sky to then send them to your door, ready to recite their vows. God is completely in control, even when I lose all control of my life and my decisions. But that doesn't mean I will stop all that I'm doing and just passively wait for someone to show up and say '' I wanna marry you''.

Finding a husband doesn't depend solely on my efforts, just like everything else, but God wants us actively working, actively searching, actively gettin involved in this life in all aspects (money, relationships, health, etc). Our job is to submit everything we are doing to Him, and he will make our paths straight. If what you're doing is done without God's approval, you are doing too much; and if you're not doing anything at all, you're doing too little.

“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:6

Hm, if I'm following your description right, you want to achieve marriage, so are actively seeking women?

This sounds a bit like Adam and Eve to me. The greatest sin you can commit is to seek your own desire (the apple, the marriage) above seeking God/God's will. Adam and Eve fell because they let Satan convince them that they knew better than God. Now if your 'activity' is seeking God, I would say that you are far less likely to achieve the goal of marriage, though certainly not impossible, but what good is marriage in the first place if it's sin? Following your own desires may end up lining up with God's, but is it worth risking that when God has demonstrated that He will make His will clear to us if we wait on Him?

Now Ritter, a lot of what I said above wasn't directed at you personally, but I do hope you consider it if you haven't already. It's what bothers me most about the attitude that someone must find a[the] person they are going to marry. Few of them ever really waited for God to tell them that His will is for them to get married. And of the few that have, many of them stopped seeking God's will in the matter after receiving the answer. Certainly there are people who God actively tells to marry, but in my experience they are rare.

Interesting perspectives here. I don't necessarily agree with some of them (call me stubborn), but it's refreshing to hear from other stances.
