What does it mean to "abide" in Christ? (John 15:1-8)

YES! He is where fruit of the Spirit comes from. Fruit of the Spirit is what we can expect when we abide (continue) in Christ.

One other thing I almost forgot. In you first response to me, you stated it was not possible for there to be Apostles today. I would be doing a disservice to the members here, and the guests who may read your comment, to let it stand unchallenged as if it were Biblical Truth. It is not. With God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

Now, I can part ways and do so in peace,

There are requirements to apostleship, none of which man can meet today. They must have witnessed Jesus in that day or they are ineligible. Look it up. I would for you but you are boring me with you attitude.
 
The Greek word for "abide" is "meno" which means to remain, tarry, not to depart, continue to be present.

This is what you said RobbyEarl. But "dwell" is not the best word for the context of the passage, and "live" is not even included. "Remain, continue" are probably the best choices for the passage context.

How can you remain or continue if you do not dwell?

so I asked you, for clarification, how the work of the cross translates into our abiding..

I know what work Jesus accomplished on the cross and do not have a clue why you think I don't...

I think I understand you to say you believe Jesus accomplished salvation for us and we cannot add to it

Correct, but it's not just salvation as valuable as that is, but also Justification, and sanctification all provided by the cross.
 
I am not sure what is causing it, but it seems to me there is some confusing posting in this thread due to misunderstandings

I thought it was a pretty straight forward topic

guess not :)

Robby the problem with this word "dwell" is that it suggests permanence. Actually so does remain. This is the kind of 'abiding" that is done by the Holy Spirit, while our abiding is more temporal, and therefore "continue" probably works better in John 15.

I asked you to clairfy because I did not know what your point was NOT becauseI don't know what the work Jesus accomplished on the cross is

Some only see this passage as a "positional" passage. The are either blind or refuse to recognize that this has nothing to do with salvation.

that would be a frozen abiding then I guess

There is mans abiding, and there is Gods abiding (Holy Spirit). Gods is permanent and unchanging (salvation), mans is ever changing (sanctification).

The word "abide" "abode" may mean not only "continue" as in John 15:9 or "remain" as in John 15:11; 16 but also "dwell" as in John 1:39. This is actually one way to refute lost salvationist crowd on their proof text of John 15:6. So that "to abide" or that "dwells" is not necessarily to mean a part of the body.

John 15: 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

1 John 4:13 - By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
