There are various meanings for the word 'convict' and one of those meanings is..

: to convince of error or sinfulness

Thats according to Merriam-Webster. So the only definition of convict is not condemnation. It is not satans job to make us aware of our sinfulness or mistakes. You're insisting on adhering to only one definition, when there is, in fact, more than one definition. As has been shown twice.
If we are born of God , we do not sin, ug. So why do we , who are His sheep, ever need to be convinced of our error? We already know, it is a question of His own resisting temptation and fleeing from the Devil, as Peter says, and, yes, indeed, Satan is the Father of lies and He will tell you that you are guilty when you give in to temptation while simultaneously God will help you from the wiles of the Devil IF you resist the Devil. :)

This can apply to music as we can be thinking of another and not God through music we listen to, and, depending on its words/lyrics can be drawn in and that is exactly when Satan tries to tempt us . The Spirit's power in us gives us ability completely to.resist the Devil. , not easy but if you are living/walking in Him you will. :)

15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Julieannie, you read my mind, milady, the Lord leads, but that was the exact scripture I was going to post next, Paul's wavering Romans' words, that are really unwavering with understanding of 'sin's' place in our life, which is nowhere, for Christ kicked it at The Cross, gone, we are free indeedIF we walk with Him and live in Him, a Spirit-fillled life. Well done :)

Biblically, we are told (paraphrasing here) to seek God in all things. I believe Mr Green's point was along these lines too. That as a christian, if we are following this command, then we probably should be listening only to things that are focused on God, or help us focus on God.

The way I see it, it's not a question of legalism or if it's sinful, but is something that should be adopted by anyone that is earnestly trying to seek God in all things in their life.

It's definitely not a question of legalism, lightnin', just music is , hmmm, how does one say it, how about DC Talk, just between you and Me :)

Well when christian artists step up and start making music I enjoy, ill probably listen to it. But there really aren't many good options for my styles of music. I mean the number of christian groups i can say ive enjoyed are easy counted on one hand... Skillet, For Today, We Came as Romans...and thats about it.

So if we should be listening to christian music, which i wont say we shouldnt be, you could be absolutely right, but if we should, then they need to apeal to a broader audience.

There MUST be more than this, naut, keep discovering, Christ bro. :) And, Christ peeps, what groups can yoy give naut that may not be mainstream Christian but mimic the sound and lyrical messages of For Today, We Came As Romans, Skillet?

You have heard Reliant K, naut ?

I hate these discussions. There's always at least one person trying to dictate to others what is and isn't appropriate, what people should and should not be listening to.
Reality is, what you choose to listen to is between you and God. Outside of that it's really no ones right to call it into question unless you can see an obvious negative influence coming as a direct, obvious result of bad music. And even then all we can really do is talk to the person and hope to let them see it and then allow them to make their own choice.

Also, i don't listen to music for one reason only. Sometimes i listen to music to have fun, be entertained, rock out. Sometimes its just background noise while i do other things. Sometimes its worship. Sometimes its spiritual growth. And even sometimes it helps me vent things out. Music is not just some one sided concept.

I listen to little secular music. And i don't listen to much mainstream or pop cultural styles. Out of the 1700+ albums i've owned, probably 90-95% of it has never made it to mainstream radio or TV.

Yes, ug, well said, 'between you and God, but, problem is, a kot of people who listen to secular music KNOW their paricular choices are against God and so they are seperating themselves from God because of this.
Bottom line: IF you are His (and you are if you accepted Him :)) , then your music should make you develop your relationship further with Him, so your faith grows and you can follow His plan for you. :)
========
Lightnin', I didn't bring up another good quote of yours but, yes, music is to be enjoyed as naut said, but, btruly, for those following Him, it can only be enjoyed if it's speaking, ultimately, of His way of empowering us to doing more goodness, reaching for more righteousness (no, this in no ways means being 'self--righteous), and His truth. All these THREE fruits of our life CAN and will be influenced as not only we are what we eat, we also are what we listen to :)

I think my brain just exploded :D

Mine, too :D:)

It's got to be some of the most profound talk of Paul of all his words said , in fact, this just might be the most profound thinking of man vs evil and the equus battle within of self, of all human nature things said in scripture . :)

God has told us "guard your gates". Our eyes and ears are gates that lead to either worldly thoughts if they are poured in. Or Godly thoughts we choose to allow in... be watchful and sober minded... What pours in can distract our focus ...

This verse has really been coming up every time I read this post.

1 Corinthians 10:12
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

God is our guard, protector, we MUST ask for it though, it is going to keep you content in all situations, 'it' is 'The Blood Of Christ.' Pray for it whenever a situation deems it fit, the Lord hears our prayers, and, loves when we call on Him for help in this way. per Proverbs 46:1 God is an ever-present help in our times of trouble. Ever present . What an AMAZING God we serve, who Loves us and wants us to succeed and shadows us through the literal dark directions we walk. He is the Light, great light to light up our l8ves, to make us whole, to carry us on to glory to glory :)

Scripture states that 'pride comes before the fall,' we MUST understand the power of 'does not sin' and do not use it in whatsoever a naive or ignorant context lest we risk death, for those ARE the wages of sin, but for God, walking in His light usurps all darkness and power authority of The Enemy.

Here is powerful scripture that leads into 'born of God, one does not sin' a couple chapters later...

I John 1:5-10
'This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. if we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in the darkness, we live and do not practice truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of jesus christ his son cleanses ass from all sin. if we say that we have no say in we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in the us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. if we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.'

$o,, are we being richly ble$$ed in a good way, that feels good in a emotional way or does the music we listen to feel good in a spirutual way. That emotional-spiritual contrast may lie in it a distinction of our chosen music filtering through our ears, brain, heart, soul.

oopsie daisy, I dictated into my MyTouch 4G , of course, John does not swear so, anyway, my bad not catching that but.....

...at least I did catch it. I'm not liking swearing in any way, shape or, form and TRY to ler the Lord keep my tongue,in check. I pray you do, too, and, again, not judging but choosing music, no matter how much uou LIKE the beat, will not benefit your thinking being kept 'focused on God,' as lightnin' said, is something important and that I think the word he used was 'strive for,' ok, two words :D

_________
Yeah, heavy words, oncefell, but the power of Romans 7, listed by julieannie, to me, anyway, is so excellent in how Paul tells us to live our lives free of being lived in sin . Through deliverance of sin, not to mention, death, scripture says too, by the redeeming power of Christ having died on the cross, and, the important part is 3 days after that, He arose, signification Truth of sin and death defeated, forevermore ! :)

Edit: * ....choosing vulgar, sexually explicit lyrics, no matter how much you LIKE the beat, will not benefit you because, like it or not, your mind WON'T be able to focus on God.

Exceptions are to every rule, you DO what God has you do, pray often if in tough environmens, and IF you have friends listening to bad songs but if you're the type that swear words Teflon off you of then you're n THAT situation of darkness to be a light.

That is what a Christian song sings about to, 'Learning to be the light.' :)

Ok, too bad that has nothing to do with my post. Which is on more than one definition of the word 'convict'.

First, please don't call me 'ug', i hate that. Ugly is only 4 letters, not too hard.
And actually the bottom line is still, its between that person and God, and not for anyone else to tell people how to choose. Even if they are making a wrong choice. And you personally don't know what God is speaking to any one person, so you really have no right to say what people should and shouldn't be listening to. So whether they make the right or wrong decision, its still personal and no one should be declaring whats right and wrong for anyone else.

Romans 14 does come to mind, though. If we think that listening to a particular song is a sin, then for us, it is. But we don't answer to each other, we answer to God, so HE'S the One we should be checking in with.

And, yes, the CONVICTION (NOT condemnation) of spirit that we feel when God shows us what the right thing to do is should be our guide in the matter.

Now, Mr. Green, if you try to give me a lecture about the definition of "conviction", I will have no choice but to respond to you in Julianna's "switcheroo" thread, by changing your screen-name to GreenNstubborn. You have been warned...........:p

Thats according to Merriam-Webster. So the only definition of convict is not condemnation. It is not satans job to make us aware of our sinfulness or mistakes. You're insisting on adhering to only one definition, when there is, in fact, more than one definition. As has been shown twice.

Convincing (ugly)/to show(pop!click!) someone of a wrong in some respect (p.c.) /someone of error or sinfulness (ugly).

Both these definitions do not convict you, guys, they 'show' you of your wrong, like God does do, AND they 'convince' you of your error.

Neither of these definitions PROVES you guilty . My Christ peeps, YOU were forgiven at the cross, and, the only remotely close (and you do not get 'there') way to get to being a 'con'-vict in God's eyes is by changing the word to conviction but this definition too, Bible-defined, should show and convince you that how I see it in scripture and feel God's discipline and correction and, with it ALWAYS, Love, is 'conviction,' deep-seated within me from He who is within me. I pray He is living in you too :) God, since I chose Him at altar, redecicated my life to Him, have NOT ever felt convicted, just the Devil that DOES convict me, and, I put that snake behind me in the name of Jesus, as, the Lord leads me. :)

Actually, this is something I'd have to respectfully disagree with. God does convict His people, for sure. He's convicted me of things I've done, and I've also heard many people give testimonies on what the Lord has convicted them of.

I can see why you say what you're saying, though.

The English definition of conviction is to be found guilty.

And, well, we are found guilty of sinning against God. AND usually, conviction comes with a sentence. And that sentence for us was condemnation to a place no one wants to go.

BUT,

Good News!! :) Jesus died and rose again! We are no longer condemned!! God is good!!

BUT, God will still, out of love, show us where we are still guilty of a sin. Because unfortunately, sin separates. I know that one from experience. Sin holds us up from getting closer to God. Big-time. And so, that's why God DOES convict us of our sins, so we can give that sin over to Him, and take out of our lives what is separating us from getting closer to Him. :) (btw, nooot promoting sinless perfection or any kind of legalism over here, just to make that clear. I believe fully in the grace of God. And God loves us where we are...but...food for thought over here...does God want us to stay stuck where we are?)

Sorry! I feel like this is a post that belongs in the Bible Study Forum >.< but sometimes you can't have one thing without having the other...and that's what it lead to in this!

God shows us our sin/convinces us of our sin, but always He shows us out of Love, His Love the necessary means of correction to get us on the right path again.

God does not need to convict His own sheep. Convict=to be found guilty, not to be shown guilty. When we came to understand God and accept Him in that precipice of time that gave us His gift of eternal life, that time preceding our acceptance of Him as our forever Lord God and Saviour, was the time YOU (and I) were CONVICTED of our sins, and, we were convicted many times of our 'world' ways because we knew what we were doing was wrong. God convicts the worldly, unsaved person, over and over, so, they can see that all it takes is 'I do accept your death on the cross, Lord, thank you, Jesus, for dying for me, for freeing me from ALL my sin and guilt.'

I pray this ALL can be music to your ears, and, if not, that's fine OK, the Lord leads. He will lead us ALL to His perfect for us in His time :)

Ok, that first line made no sense to me whatsoever, and the rest just proved my point. Thanks.

ugly, the Lord leads, and, He leads out of Love, we respond out of conviction of our faith in having believed in Him through His Word and events that drew us unto Him, not always, but typically an event happened excruciatingly, or,, distinctly, 'God.' You saw Him, and, it changed your direction and thinking of following Christ. :)

Yes, this is absolutely the Truth, the 'conviction' sentence, as I never foumd the scripture in Rom. 14 for if to one it is a sin then it is, which is so true a statement, and, scripture, too, if you prove me where you found it. I would search it out but figure that snackers won't mind, he's a pretty smart boy looks like to me, and, if not, don't forget to often let Him no he's 'handsome,' milady, as I'm certain that kind of compliment will be music to his ears :)
