Magenta, I have to disagree with you about Trudeau 1.0. The first time I saw him was during the Liberal party convention when he was elected head of the party. I was so stunned by him, I decided I would never vote Liberal and I never have. (I wasn't old enough to vote for another 5 years!).
In the west, he stole our oil, gave all the advantages to eastern Canada, from rail rates to cost of oil. Alberta could have sold its oil for 2 to 3 times as much in the 70's to the US, but he forced the provincial government to send it at bargain basement rates, and charged us for the shipping. He was the first prime minister to start a debt, and almost drove the country into the ground forever. It took decades before Liberal governments were able to steer the country back to economic prosperity - they greatly resented Trudeau.
Then there was our "repatriated" constitution. We now have a situation, where our elected representatives in Parliament or the provincial legislatures can pass a law, with 100% in favour, from all parties, and a constitutional challenge can result in that law being struck down.
When Trudeau 2.0 was voted in as the head of the Liberal Party, I saw nothing but trouble coming. The last year, since the federal election, Trudeau has vindicated my fear, proving that he is actually worse than version 1.0.
As for Margeret Trudeau, a very troubled woman, no doubt about it! Sigh!
What would be the purpose of that,but of course there would be a purpose to some,for controlled conflict brings about controlled change,and if there is a massive amount of illegal immigrants,what is the solution,tear down the borders allowing Mexico,United States,and Canada,as one super nation,which is going to happen anyway eventually,for the 10 horn kingdom to come is the world split in to ten sections with a leader in each section,and chaos is what will drive the world together.

Addressing the question in the Title of the OP:
If properly constructed and monitored, a "wall" would accomplish quite a lot. I say "wall" because some stretches of our Southern Border would not allow an actual wall to be constructed. At best, some type of security fence, and, possibly, not even that, but electric monitoring would be required.
One example of this would be the stretch of Border that runs through the Big Bend National Park. You can search it and look for pictures to better understand. As well, in my opinion, some adjustments in a "wall" must be made to accommodate the wild life that migrates from the U.S. to Mexico and vise versa. Big Horn Sheep and Black Bears and other wildlife as well. To prevent their migrations might well lead to their extinction, and I do not think anyone would want that. It would be easy enough to accommodate these creatures and still maintain a level of Security.
As for what it would accomplish:
1) Illegal entry into our Nation by peoples we do not know, nor do we know their intentions or what health issues (diseases) they may have and would pass on to our citizens.
2) Illegal drug smuggling.
3) Illegal weapons smuggling.
4) Illegal slave trade, which is an actual problem along our Southern Border.
5) Other illegal trades such as the transportation of stolen property from the U.S. to Mexico, such as Automobiles, Electronics and other items.
6) Enhance our National Security by establishing one more barrier terrorists would have to overcome to enter the U.S.
7) Saving lives. The last report I saw said that over 200 people died in our Southern deserts trying to reach a City that was too far from their point of entry for them to walk.
8) Environmental habitat damage would be reduced. There is a huge amount of trash scattered across our Southern lands left there by the illegals and drug smugglers.
These are some I can think of with little effort.
Building the "wall" has many, many more advantages other than stopping illegals from crossing to "pick fruit" or some such. Proponents of such a wall have failed miserably to properly argue the necessity for such a wall.

Come to Banff National Park in Alberta. You can learn how to build animal bridges. These ones go over a 4 lane divided highway. A variety of animals, including deer, elk, bears, big horn sheep and mountain goats use it.
Accommodating animal traffic should be the least of your problems! Of course, guards will have to be stationed in either end, to prevent humans from using these bridges!

Your zeal is admirable and I agree with you 100%.
Unfortunately, even though many are ignorant by choice or fate, this is not news really.
There Is something about Trump that attracts us to post furiously and some take a discussion about Trump so seriously that the discussion becomes personal and devolves Into personal attack which Is an Indication of extreme frustration because of an inability to focus and communicate on a mature level.
Healthcare is not a federal issue, immigration and national defense is.
You seem to have overlooked the most important fact of all....
Those monies don't NEED to go to healthcare, because Obama and the congressional stooges forced Obamacare on us.... our healthcare issues have been solved. Now, EVERYONE has affordable health care.

Time has already told. The ship has sailed. The dog has hunted. The toilet has flushed.
Building a wall will not to much as it does not address the underlying problem of hopelessness due to poverty, persecution, lack of opportunity and freedom. If it reduces the influx of bad people trying to enter this country that would be a good thing but besides that all it does is isolate and alienate those that are less fortunate. It certainly will have little effect in improving the lives of the average American. I do believe that this country must have control of its borders so it's not altogether a bad thing.
