What is "the law of liberty" in James 2:12? - Biblical Hermeneutics Stack Exchange

James 2

1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Love, Walter And Debbie

What the Scriptures say: A term used in the bible to refer to the 10 commandments.
I would strongly recommend that you check the passage in some other translations. The context does not support your conclusion.

What the Scriptures say: A term used in the bible to refer to the 10 commandments.
How you can get the ten commandments from law of liberty is simply mind boggling. I think perhaps I may have overestimated you.

What the Scriptures say: A term used in the bible to refer to the 10 commandments.
the law of liberty is the law of mercy

“So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”
‭‭James‬ ‭2:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

remember Jesus taught this

“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:35-38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

He’s saying we need to live by the law of mercy towards others the freedom we find in the gospel like Jesus judgement there in luke chapter 6

This part James is explaining the problem with the law of Moses

“If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
‭‭James‬ ‭2:8-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

See if I tell a lie I’m guilty of breaking Gods whole law if I keep every command but violate one command one time I’ve. Broken tbat covenant it’s the same thing paul is saying here

“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:10-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I could be a good person and sin once and the law says in a guilty sinner condemned to death because I’ve broken Gods law paul warns again here

“For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

But the gospel is not about the old law it’s about the word of God in Christ he gave us his law when he came forth as he had promised.

The law of liberty is the law Jesus imparted think of the difference in being judged like this

“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭18:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

and this

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:37-38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That is the only way for us to be saved because we have all sinned and been condemned to death for it now Jesus has taken that condemnation and offered a new life with a brand new law that is far better one that saves sinners through the principle of mercy and truth together

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:15-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The phrases 'royal law' and 'law of liberty' are only found in the book of James, and represent two entirely different things.
The Royal Law is the Law of Christ - which is the 'love God and your neighbor' commandments.

The Law of Liberty is the concept and precept of having a privilege with an associated responsibility.

In James 1:25, "looketh into the perfect law of liberty" means understanding the privilege and accepting the responsibility.

The phrase "and continueth therein" is referring to a sincere committed "living out" of a proper use of the privilege to carry out the responsponsibility.
This is the Law of Liberty - that we have liberty in Christ - and, that we should stand in that liberty for the cause of Christ.

The Law of Liberty is the freedom from the yoke of the Mosaic Law ------

Freedom from the dominion of corrupt desires of the soul so we can do what the will of God requires which is right living ----

Freedom from the restraints and miseries of earthly weakness ----

Freedom to live as we should not as we please -------

Amen Paul’s simply referencing this law that sets men free of bondage

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

it goes back to when he was promising to come and speak his word

“Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭51:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
‭‭John‬ ‭18:37‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It is acknowledging the truth that sets us free from satans dominion over us

“in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:25-26‬

thats what we need set free from the captivity of the law of sin within us this part

“I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. ( knowledge of good and evil )

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

This is why we sin we were corrupted long ago in our mind and heart with the forbidden knowledge it is the truth that saves us the true and correct knowledge of Jesus Christ because it cleanses our mind and heart of the corruption a

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭

What is "the law of liberty" in James 2:12?
The Law of Liberty is no different than the Royal Law, which is no different than the Law of Christ, which is no different than the Law of Love. Different terms for the same basic Law, which is in fact rooted in the Ten Commandments.

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the Law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the Law. (Rom 13:8-10).

Under the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit regenerates the sinner, and also writes this Law on his heart and mind. Then the Holy Spirit empowers the child of God to apply this Law of Love in his interactions with others. As Paul says "if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". So in fact every commandment is covered under this Law. Christ said that this was the second greatest commandment, the first being love towards God with heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Thanks Nehemiah6. Here's yet another scripture where liberty and love are linked: "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. "
