By the way, what happens when a Grown-Up Jock meets a Grown-Up Nerd? I found out last week.
I work with a guy my age who was the complete opposite of me in high school (we didn't grow up together, we just talk about a lot of parallel time frames in our life)--he was the popular jock who hung out with the "in" crowd, and I, of course, was the nerd. Fortunately for me, he's also very easy-going and has a good sense of humor.
A few nights ago we were sorting a huge load of merchandise, and he was about to put a box of baking supplies in with the "Electronics" stack.
"Derek," I said (not his real name), "I'm pretty sure that box goes under 'Kitchen'..."
"Ok, I'll check", he replied, and began to cut the box open.
In the middle of this process, I tried to stop him by saying, "But Derek, you don't have to bother cutting it open (*RRRIIIIPPP!!!* as he tore into it with a blade) because... it says, 'Baking Foil Cups' right on the side of the box!"
He finally LOOKED at the side of the box... and shook his head.
I told him, "Well you see, while you were out winning world championships, I was at the library practicing a little skill called, 'Reading.' I know it probably didn't seem very useful at the time..." And I gave him a big *grin*.
Thank goodness he saw the humor of the situation!! Here I was, the Grown-Up Nerd (reading), and he, being the Grown-Up Jock took to the task in the most physical way possible (cutting it open.)
No worries, though. He eventually got me back, because the next week I was making so many clumsy mistakes that our boss asked, while laughing, "Kim!! Have you been smoking (drugs)???!"
Heh heh heh. Good old high school references.
