Are those labeled poor by modern American standards the same as the poor spoken of in the Bible?

Don't think the poor of the bible had cell phones or drove cars or bought junk food.

And you believe the poor of today do? I cannot say that with total certainty. I have experienced dtrue poverty, and true poverty did not allow any such luxury, however my life's poverty long predates cell phones, I do know from experience that any who are truly poor will not have such items.

Widows and orphans, and those upon whom outrageous misfortune has befallen.

Okay...but what about the question.

Are you implying that American "widows and orphans, and those upon whom outrageous misfortune has befallen" are the same as the poor mentioned in the Bible?

Simple question, simple answer requested.

Yes, they are the same. Common sense tells us all that the widows and orphans left with nothing and now one to heop them are the ones needy, then and now.

The vast majority of American poor either own a car or have easy access to one, the rest have the use of subsidized public transportation.

The government hands out free cell phones for the American poor and pays the monthly bill as well.

Obesity is rampant among the American poor not hunger.

It takes little effort to verify these facts.

The thread stated by America's standards.
Every time I go to Walmart I see many who are called poor and receive government aid do have expensive sell phones, drive newer cars than I do and buy junk food that I cannot afford.

“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

for I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:31-40‬ ‭KJV‬‬

there are poor everywhere the ones who everyone just walks by and pretends not to see. Food , clothing , drink , friendship necessaties anyone lacking these things is poor . It doesn’t matter how they arrived at this point when they don’t have the necessaties it’s universal in scripture they are the poor and God has always placed their needs high on his priorities

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.

If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; and if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day: and the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭58:6-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we’re aren’t meant to look at what not to do not killing someone isn’t exactly live exhibiting itself but when you have enough and you see someone who doesn’t this is where the rubber meets the road where love is different from words not lips but deeds

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:16-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

aid we see that person who’s obviously in need and we have plenty it’s easy for us to pass on by like the priests in the parable just look the other way and go on with our “ blessed lives “ but that’s not how God is and not how his children are they see and compassion moves them to act they can’t pass bye and look the other way of they can help because that stranger on the corner is loves by Jesus who lives in thier heart

If Jesus passed by the poor and didn’t help we’d all be lost in damnation forever but he’s not like that he reaches to the poorest and lifts them up and fills them until thier cup runneth over and spills out to others

The poor are those who don’t have what they need and our hands are those working the lords will on earth to reach out to them

So are they really poor?
No, they are just not willing to work, and the govt wants to "break" the middle cleass by wasting and stealing as much money as possible.

There are honest people in need, but that is probably less than 20% of those getting free stuff!!!!!!!... other people worked for....

I am all in on helping the truly needy, and do as often as I can,but the fact is many that get help are less needy than many who are helping. Some are just lazy and know how to work the system.

It is a cold, cold heart that cannot see the abject poverty abounding in front of their eyes. It will only become worse, but there is Someone in charge of it all and all will turn to His glory and riches come the Kingdom..

Obesity in the poor is usually due toa very poor diet, usually due toa lack of means. Lots ofcrbs, littlle valuale proteing. It sounds as if some here see and hear only what they want to hear.

Believe me, there a tens of thousands falling through those so-called welfare systems' cracks.

Amen it’s almost impossible not to see the state of the world the most poverty is found inside man and thier hearts towards others

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we think about Christianity in the mind of “ me “ but it’s meant to change our mindset to “ we “

“And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:30-

Two men were religious and pious , one man a stranger loved someone with the love of God

Jesus said we will always have the poor among us.
I am blessed to live near a small town (1100 people) a long way from big cities and their problems and to my knowledge there is no one in my area that is homeless or hungry. Many of us may be poor by government standards, but none go without what God said he would provide, food shelter and clothing.
I understand that is not true in many areas.

It is not that we do not see it, but we are too poor ourselves to help.
One might think you do not see the many that are just lazy and work the system which takes from the truly needy.
