Why Are So Many Scientists Atheists?

Facts come by observation but

Steven Weinberg is a theoretical physicist, atheist and a nobel prize winner for his work is physics. He puts it quite well. Scientists are so busy with their work that they don't have time to figure out whether they believe in God or not. It does not matter to many of them. He also states that in biology most biologists are atheists due to fighting against religious fundamentalists who challenge evolution. Rarely will a creationist challenge a physicist due to the fact creationists don't know much if anything about the big bang or cosmology.

Cmon. So basically we can assume anyone who believes in God just has loads of free time and nothing to occupy themselves with.

How many actual scientists do you know? Maybe you could do a study with neuroimaging and try to figure out what parts of their brain are so busy they have no time to think about God.

I happen to know a scientist , I asked him in the middle of his work if he believed in God. He responded with "I'm not sure I do actually, but when I am looking at cells I have a really hard time believing they just happened."

Somewhere along the line he must have had time to think.

Give me a few named examples, if any of them are from 'Expelled' I would be happy to show you that Ben Stein lied about almost all the examples he gave.

Not to mention you havn't even put a coherent statement across, first you state they can't say they believe in God or they will be ridiculed then you jump to they can't question evolution. Which is it? Is it both? Because you have completely muddled your point. Why not look at an interview with Nobel prize winner Steven Weinberg who states that he deals with physicists who believe in God all the time, and that they are not 'rediculed'. You're just spouting nonsense to get people to feel sorry for you. Or look at Francis Collins who was in charge of the human genome project and a devout christian, who was friends with very outspoken atheists. Where is the supposed ridicule you are talking about?

Since your statement about scientists 'being rediculed for believing in God' is false, l will wait till you post some examples of people losing their tenure. I also have a strong feeling you will list all the one Ben Stein did, and you did no work to see if they were accurate.

I never said they "can't" say either, most choose not to due to the problems being vocal about their beliefs can bring on their careers. Belief in God and Evolution are conflicting beliefs and obviously both are relevant to the conversation....I don't understand what logical point you are trying to make there. As far as ridicule goes, it's common and obvious.....mix a bunch of atheists in with a few believers and tell me ridicule doesn't happen....please, we've all seen this. It's not something scientists magically don't have to deal with because they are a scientist.

As far as people being discriminated against and/or being denied tenure.....it's common and well documented. If your actually interested in learning about the issue, rather than spouting a bunch of baseless negativity and denying it happens.....check out "Slaughter Of Dissidents" by Dr. Jerry Bergman. It's a good intro and has more than the several documented cases you requested.

Well who's judging? Which Christian? Which denomination? The Christian world calls one another heretics on every possible occasion. Just depends on who's defining that word.

The scientific community as a whole are by and large non-believers and depend on their own thinking of how and why the universe exists. Why is this so?

most of modern science operates under the assumptions of materialistic naturalism...that is the belief that the physical world is all there is and everything that happens is a result of the laws of physics...

What I always found interesting about this is that the laws do not define a cause. The laws are merely an explanation of what's already there. The laws they discover don't -do- anything. I can't understand how people can be so smart and learn all this stuff about creation, but never follow their theories to their logical conclusions. When they do though, they get to the end and can't explain further, so they start making things up like the big bang, and when that's rejected, they start making up multi-verse theory, etc.

They claim that belief in a God causes infinite regress and there is never a point where it begins, which is outrageous because the buck stops with God. Their theories on the other hand -do- cause an infinite regress. Something simply can't be made from nothing so then they develop multi-verse, and I'm sure something else will be thought up after that, etc. They can't explain how something came from nothing without infinite regress. God is and always will be the more logical conclusion, even from a scientific view point.

The scientists I attented the University with were either believers or agnostics.

So your evidence for riducle in an area you don't work in and groups you don't interact in is that 'it just happens'? Firstly I quoted a man in the area who works with other people in that area and his opinion is far more trustworthy than yours. Belief in God and evolution are not contradictory, unless you believe that your God is the only God people are actually capable of believing in. Is that true? In the history of religion and contemporary religion has there been one God in which people believed in? Obviously not your point is inaccurate, in fact your view of christianity is incompatible with evolution. That is your point please make it clearer next time so we don't have to dissect your statements.

Secondly I said they cannot express the belief or they will be reidculed. That is stating that if they say they believe in God and announce it in a scientific community they are subject to redicule. I did not say they physically cannot rstate it nor did I say that you wrote that either. I made the point clear and merely re-iterated your statement.

Again checking that book, I am not paying 20 dollars and more for it, not to mention I could not find any reviews of it apart from creationist websites. I also checked his sources, he quote mines Darwin and takes him out of context. How about providing a specific example of someone losing their tenure, instead of throwing a book into the mix and claiming victory.

i have received the same correction and i am only sharing with you what the Teacher the HOLY SPIRIT say about us continuing in ignorance lacking in the Holy Scriptures in revelations.
When i know the truth about outsiders who are blinded and only GOD judges, i learn not to be busybody anymore about them or discuss about them. Because i have faults highlighted to me by the Holy Scripture by the HOLY SPIRIT the anointing in me.

Is a city really a good comparison to an animal? Do cities reproduce naturally and contain mututations which is benificial for the enviroment are kept and if not are lost? No cities are made by humans and the comparison is off.

It is called a rhetorical flourish. If you need me to spell out the conclusion I drew on, it is scientists are hard working men and women, and the question does God exist is not one which many of them spend a huge deal of time on. My brother is a scientist actually, a microbiologist and he doesn't spend time contemplating this question in the lab. I didn't think I needed to spell out what I meant when I used a rhetorical flourish. If the scientist you talked to said 'they just happened' I have no clue what he is doing working with cells.

I think "scientists" is being confused with "intelligent people". Some people feel comfortable making decisions without referring to a religious book. They know that they should help others, they should share, they shouldn't steal, etc. So religion seems unnecessary to them.
