My understanding is that the laws perfectly met the needs of the people at that time -- sure and understandable ways to prosperity, in all that means.

Nowadays the regulations are a refuge for someone losing their sanity, by reading them a person comes to face a perfect, ordered mind. There are other presentday applications.
