Well *I* appreciated the story.

*sigh*

I suppose that's about all I should say, since I don't want to set off some huge debate on how we should treat or interact with those who believe differently than us.

Yeah, some people are just lost causes, so caught up in their own unwarranted self righteousness.

I didnt see anyone speak of their own righteousness. Re-read the posts. As a rule I'm sure you will find that Christians dont focus on their own ability to earn their own salvation its all in Christ... so Christ Righteousness would have been more aptly put. so i will revise your post to state "Yeah, some people are assured of their salvation and caught up in Christ's righteousness" God Bless you as you seek Him.

I probably am slightly self-righteous (I wouldn't know since I guess being self-righteous isn't something one can be aware of), but I don't think that means me not being tolerant and willing to experience other religions makes me any more self-righteous than I already am.

Like Still_waters said, God didn't want His children partaking in pagan rituals, so why should we? I am willing to acknowledge that there are other religions, and I am willing to allow them the freedom to practice those religions. However, that does not mean I am going to partake in any of their rituals or practices. Sure, I might research their beliefs or go to one of their meetings if invited (much like I went to seminary with my Mormon friend for a few weeks), but partaking in pagan rituals is where I draw the line. I do not think it is necessary to immerse myself in a religion different than mine in order to understand it.

The pejorative connotations associated with the word Pagan make me furious.

to be honest, I was using the words secular and pagan interchangeably, because both were mentioned in the thread so I wasn't sure which term to use.

If it would make you less furious, replace pagan with secular. It really isn't that big a deal.

I'm sorry you feel upset with the distinction drawn between Christians and non-Christians, but the Bible is full of those distinctions. Yes it is offensive to some.

I agree we need to share our faith with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

But as the verse also says, in our hearts we have to honor Christ as Lord. That means not buying in to false religions and participating in their practices.

I sense that you truly wish for all to get along. That's why you found such beauty in this spiritual experience. People of different faiths were just experiencing 'God' without all the divisive distinction making.

But the thing is, according to our Bible, God does make distinctions. In his mind there is NO fellowship between HIS followers and followers of other gods. This doesn't mean we can't befriend them and show them love. It doesn't mean we fail to show them respect.

It does mean though that we can't fail to view ours as the true way and their faith as the wrong way.

The only reason that I get so upset about it is because of the air of superiority said distinctions are often spoken with.

Being Christian does not make you a better person or more worthy than a non-Christian in and of itself.

Exactly.

I'm better than everyone else because I am.

I don't think anyone is using an air of superiority here. The Christian faith is exclusive. It says there is only one name under heaven by which all shall be saved. It says there is only one mediator between God and man.

Those statements are often interpreted as arrogant, but that's just the truth of the Christian faith.

Jesus has always been a stumbling block for many. For our generation he's a stumbling block because he doesn't give way to the desire to have all roads lead to God.

Since he's so exclusive, people in our culture go around calling it arrogance and it simply isn't arrogance. It's just the truth.

Cup-of-Ruin, thank you for kindly volunteering as a prime example of the greatest qualm so many hold with Christianity.

Honestly, the 'all roads lead homers' usually talk about Christians with an air of superiority too. They talk down to us for thinking Jesus is distinct and the only way. They speak of their 'tolerance' with much superiority.

We're scorned for thinking our faith is the only way But no one ever calls the all roads lead homers on their intolerance and arrogance.

There are many paths to accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour.

Last night I had the opportunity to participate in an almost forgotten religious ceremony.

The Yurok tribe put on a little get together not far from here, everyone of every faith and background was invited to attend.

I had the honor of being a part of a 'Sweat Lodge.'

It was a very flattering invitation, because to my knowledge very few outsiders are brought in on things like that. The experience as a whole was a very moving and physical one, spending a considerable amount of time in a make-shift buffalo hide sauna, listening to the beautiful sounds of the Yurok's traditional song and prayer.

The most incredible part of the entire experience? They did not try to convert anyone, or preach their doctrine. They believe in a God, called 'Grandfather' or 'Creator' by them. As far as they seem to be concerned, 'Creator' is the very essence of every other god in existence, so to them a Christian worships and loves 'Grandfather' just as much as a Hindi does. I was absolutely blown away by how accepting they were of everyone, there was no fear or shunning of people based on their religion.

I highly suggest that anyone who has a deep-seated fear of other religion at the very least take the time to experience them, and see that Christianity is not the only religion that holds a doctrine centered on love and compassion.
I am so glad you had such a beautiful expeariance. It is a rare privilage to be apart of such a cerimony. I want to caution you, not against this group as I dont know there full beliefs. But there are many faiths out there that speak well of God yet reject his most important premis. That You must accept Jesus into your heart. I have a few friends that were so moved by such groups and now their faith is so corrupt that I fear for them. We are in a time where evil wants so much to rob you of Gods gift. Always know that Jesus is your savior. That is your true guard against satan. I have always been so greatful that Our Father gave us such a pure and simple way to dissern against evil. His son Jesus. Evil can be so very beautiful and betraying. I hope you get to have many more wonderful expeariances. Just keep your eyes on Jesus.

We are to love. We are also to know there is one God. His name is not grandfather. Any god besides the one true God is the devil. Satan has decevied many people. Don't fall into his trap. If anyone says there is any other gods beside the one true God you are to know they are blinded by satan and pray for them. You are not to mingle and go in and help them worship satan. This is not some faiy tale game we are in. This is a world full of satan. We are in a war to bring souls to Christ. The devil is doing a good job of turning the souls to hell. Don't help satan. Help Jesus. We are here to help Jesus. God bless you, love
