I liked what you said in brown above and it is so true. We are all at different places in our walk with the Lord.
What happens to some of us is that a teacher could believe something we were not taught in our church upbringing or that is not "traditional". What is "traditional" to some may not be to others.
So, if a teacher is saying something that they don't believe - then that teacher is a heretic. Sometimes people have been hurt by others that believe a certain teaching and thus malice and bitterness sets in against the teacher of that truth because of the bad behavior of others towards them.
Take "speaking in tongues" - there are Greek scholars who believe it is for today and others believe that it isn't for today. Both are Greek scholars so whether one is a Greek scholar in real life has no bearing on the revelation of the scriptures. Unfortunately some do try to "Lord it over other people's faith" by belittling them with their "superior knowledge".
There are those in the body of Chris that believe that those that speak in tongues are of the devil and of course they are "heretics". There are those that believe God wants His children well and will protect them - others don't believe in that - so of course those that do believe are "heretics" to those that don't. This can apply to any belief in Christ's work on the cross - including the forgiveness of sins.
Martin Luther was a heretic to the established church of his day when he said "The just shall live by faith". Their argument was for the last 1300 years we have believed in our way of believing - which was the catholic church's way at the time. Luther was going against 1300 years of traditional thoughts and beliefs and thus he was a heretic because what he said "conflicted" with their religious beliefs.
Personally I don't believe in everything any teacher says. I hope to repent and believe things differently then I do now in 2 years as I see more of the beauty and love and grace of our loving father towards us in Christ.

it's fine to study greek etc, but even scripture states that the word kills, but the Spirit gives life
guess that one is up for interpretation too
I get the impression that if certain people do not jump up and down and yell heretic we are all going to hell
there are things I certainly disagree with...like that thread started by someone regarding the book/movie the shack.
that movie represents God as a woman and apparently, you are religious if you disagree
well I disagree because scripture is very firm in the way God is portrayed and it is not a woman
