Don't know how much people now when it comes area, but not long ago I came across a interesting article which indicates that the oldest manuscripts (Papyrus 115) to date have the number of the beast as 616. So if the oldest manuscript has the reference to 616, why do later manuscripts have 666?

What is also interesting in some of the research I have done, the symbols used at the time, looks like to be a reference to the ancient hebrew alphabet (each of the symbols have meanings)

Its also good to know that it is not in arabic numerical system (666 - three sixes), but 600, 60 and 6, in Greek: χξϛ or χιϛ (every character is different), so the hollywood effect of three sixes is a cultural invention.

Oooh! I like Numbers!

"Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying"...

Oh... wait... you meant, like, "numbers"...

Here's a link to a ten-minute video that takes the question of their meaning in a completely different direction. I don't necessarily hold to the interpretation presented, but I will acknowledge that it merits consideration.
