As a new member I have a question that has been bothering me- I am curious about Christianity. Did Adam and Eve's children have children with each other? This is a question I have had problems with considering Christianity.
I would appreciate some enlightening on this topic.

Many thanks,

Charlie

Yes, they had children with each other. But why do you have a problem with that? It's just how it is. This is how humans reproduced back then.

Hi Charlie. Welcome to CC!

Yes, Adam and Eve had three (named) children. They had Cain first, then Abel (very close together). Cain killed Abel when they were mature adults. Adam and Eve had Seth to replace Abel. We're told that Adam had other sons and daughters. And as Adam and Eve were the only humans alive at the time and then later, their children, this means their children had to marry and have children with each other. It was necessary that early on to 'be fruitful and multiply'. As sin had only cursed Creation for a short time, Adam and Eve and their children's children would likely have had near perfect DNA, none to very few mutations. It was only by the time of Moses that relatives couldn't marry close relatives. This is because there were far more mutations in people's bloodlines by that time, leading to birth defects etc. and also because there were plenty of other people to choose from among the tribes of Israel. Also, God wanted to set His people apart from their pagan neighbours. I hope this helps to answer your question. I can provide you with an article or two if you'd like more information.

Yes.
Was it wrong? No. God knew obedience to His command "be fruitful and multiply" to Adam and Eve would eventually lead to such a situation.

The time and conditions back then were not as they are today.

The Law forbids sister and brother unions, but as you know Adam and Eve were before the law.

We wonder how could that be? I can't phantom it. Again, different day and time. Eventually the need for close relatives to have such a union would diminish. Relatively quickly. Remember, we all descend from Adam and Eve. Relationship there.

And last of all, the union of brother and sister was to procreate and not perverted.

The first brother and sister union back then would be in the setting of only siblings. No other persons. That's the only girl. She only sees her brothers. No one else. Not a feeling of choice. Just natural like.

Today, Nope. Nope. Nope.

Hi Charlie. Please go to Genesis chapter 2 and find verses 23 and 24:

23The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

24That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Once you figure out what the word "flesh" means in both verses you will probably find the answer to your question.

Thank you for the comments, they are helpful. It is difficult to appreciate the fact that brother and sister slept with one another and that this was ok then and not any more, since the bible claims to represent morals for today based on sayings thousands of years ago.
the DNA case by Tintin is interesting, but then why is this not explicit in Genesis? DNA is not mentioned at all, and it seems so important. Also, I was reading Genesis and in chapter 19 Lot was seduced by his daughters, and his line was successful with no response from God to punish him. Tintin I would appreciate some articles to read.

Yes, the DNA case isn't stated in the biblical text, but it can certainly be inferred with what we know about DNA mutations. Also, Adam and Eve and their children were much closer in time, to the perfect Creation and as such, would've been far less affected by the consequences of the Fall (at least from a biological perspective) than those living post-Flood and even now. We have to remember the huge life-spans they had. All of this factors into it. And you're right about Lot and his daughters. But did you notice his daughters' offspring became sworn enemies of God's people, Israel?

Here are several articles to help you in your understanding. God bless. :)

I've never understood why evolutionists get so angry when you call them a monkey's uncle. Isn't that just being consistent with what they believe?

Well Lynn incest is against the law (both secular and religious), against progress of civilization, and would surely not be accepted by any right minded person of any religion.
And if Christianity claims morality as its domain and the Bible as the only guide, any contradictions should be explored before anyone considers your religion.
And finally, it seems almost clumsy to make two people without thought of the future of the species other than incest. Why not make many people at once rather than cause so much obvious confusion and discussion?
Thank you for your reply

Well as I understand it it would be like an evolutionist saying why do Christians get angry when they are compared with fundamentalists? I am playing Devil's advocate- forgive the expression

Those links I posted give you the reasons why. Incest is wrong now and has been every since the time of Moses (around 1,450BC). Every person on this earth (past, present, future) must be descended from Adam. Because as descendants of Adam we all sin, and by Jesus Christ we can all be saved, if only we believe on and trust in Him. For God's grace to save all humanity, we must come from Adam, as he was the first man. Think about it. Christ is 100% God and 100% man (He was never good at Maths) and has been fully God and fully man ever since He came to earth as a baby boy. Only one who is both God and man and perfect in all His ways can be the sacrifice needed to save humanity, once and for all time. Therefore, Jesus is our Kinsman-Redeemer.

Yes, sure. We need to empty ourselves of all preconceived ideas and approach these two verses to gain understanding. New vessels are needed for new wine as the Lord has taught us. And in Isaiah 6:9 as in many other places we read,

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

Understanding does not simply come by reading. A Christian believes in Jesus Christ and therefore must have an advantage in understanding over a person who does not believe in our Lord. We have the resource of the New Testament which unlocks many of the mysteries of the Old Testament. As an example, if it were not for Paul teaching us that the rock in the wilderness that provided water was Christ, no one would have dared entertain the thought by a simple reading of the account in Exodus.

1 Corinthians 10:4

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Now let us see how FLESH is used in the New Testament, how NUDE is used in the New Testament, how SHAME is used in the New Testament and .... Once you have that knowledge, apply it to these two verses in Genesis.

I don't see the correlation. Christians don't believe they come from fundamentalists. Evolutionists absolutely do believe that they're descended from the common ancestor of a monkey. And common ancestor of a monkey or just a monkey, there's very little difference. It's all semantics. They don't know what they believe and why, they just do. Blind faith, that's what it is. Blind faith.

GOD created Adam and Eve to produce mankind. Adam and Eve had both sons and daughters. GOD gave them a command be fruitful and multiply. Now in order for mankind to multiply they had to have relationship. As time went on there were enough people to not have relationship with close relatives.

When we think of this it seems strange to have relationships with siblings and or close relatives as it should be. But in those times it was not, for they were the only ones there to have relations with.

As time went on in order for the Hebrews/Israelites to remain pure GOD would have them have relations with only that of the same ethnicity in order to not confuse Godly principles, commandments, lifestyle and most important the Coming Messiah!

Now think on this, We know that all mankind started with Adam and Eve. So we all are family stemming from the same two people GOD commanded to multiply.

Blessings!!!!!!!

Myometrium,

Your question was okay. She's an angry person. Very much so. I pray for her.

Okay, now just think if you and your brothers and a couple of sisters are the only children.

You go hunting and fishing with your father. You don't really know your sisters as sisters. They are just there. Kinda like. They don't have cooties, but you don't have any thoughts.

You and brothers have seen your sisters from time to time, bathing, etc. Why? Because you all are living together. You grew up not so modestly. No big deal. Plus there is no pornography, no Hollywood, no makeup. No ugly. No beauty. No perversion.

Any sex between the sibling will probably be much different than say between today's husband and wife.

You mention brother and sister sleeping together.
I don't think it was so much like that. Easiest way for me to describe it, kinda like breeding. Nothing more.

Incest no. That came later.

Have you stopped to wonder why the writer of Genesis didn't write or cover for himself concerning the sibling offspring?

The bible is unlike any other book. It is credible.
