Isn't it remarkable how we got from 613 laws (Torah) to Three (Micah 6:8) to Two (Matt 22:37-39). All other religions start simple and grow complex - as humans are naturally compelled to do. Also remarkable that the two laws Jesus mentioned are not the ones explicitly stated as essential to salvation. This suggests to me that law keeping and salvation are not necessarily identical ends.

You are so right !
The 'commandments 'contained in ordinances/works are NOT the same as the '10 Commandments which are spiritual.

The 'works being temporal were abolished on the cross - Eph 2v15
the 10 Commandments being spiritual are eternal !

All the OT law/works can do now is help our 'spiritual understanding....keeping them 'according to the 'letter is no longer required.

Is it possible that the "handwriting of ordinances that were against us" that Paul mentions could be those laws written by Moses' hand (and placed ON THE SIDE of the Ark) and NOT the ten written with the finger of God that were SPOKEN to the people and were INSIDE the Ark?

Exactly my friend, and this is what most people 'don't differentiate !
They insist they are 'one and the same law and thus 'abolish all. What a grave mistake they are making !

I have a tough enough time with the Ten Commandments, same as most people. 613 laws of the mitzvot is asking entirely too much.
It is like someone else mentioned break one be found guilty of the whole.

With myself I believe the whole bible is the law of God .It contains no philosophical theories of men . Every law must be believed when and if he give us his faith to make it possible to believe. This is if we are to walk with Christ as two walking in agreement . I would consider the first law as it is written below.

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Refuse to believe that law as James says and any person will be found guilty of violating the whole perfect law of God.

For by and through that law we can see all the work he does so that we can seek after him who has no form. So its not only what the law says but how it works in those who do believe to the salvation of their soul, No law, no salvation. Just a philosophical theory of men called a private interpretation.

In Philippians 2 as a law not subject to change we are informed that it is Christ who works in us to both will and do his good purpose .

He does that work that he appoints to us according to His perfect law. By it ,according to its workings "we are delivered from the eternal wage of sin."

The law of the LORD is perfect, "converting the soul": the testimony of the LORD is sure, "making wise the simple".
The statutes of the LORD are right, "rejoicing the heart": the commandment of the LORD is pure, "enlightening the eyes".
The fear of the LORD is clean, "enduring for ever": the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
"More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb".
Moreover by them "is thy servant warned:" and in keeping of them "there is great reward".Psa 19:7
