though I'm not interested in observing it, there is great wisdom to be found in the law. I'll start from the end of the pentateuch and work backwards, maybe we'll meet somewhere in the middle.

if you are moses, you shall not pass over into the land.

Deut 34:4b "Thou hast seen it with thy eyes, and shalt not pass over to it."

Most translations say something similar to:

"So your enemies will cringe before you,
And you will tread upon their high places."

but I don't know... am I interpreting too much? wasn't all the law given to Israel?

maybe it should just be

you shall dwell in confidence alone on the land of Jacob.
and
your sandal shall be iron and brass.

I think you're interpreting too much on the 2nd one. One the 1st part, Israel was told to destroy every nation in the promised land. If they did, they would live securely. If not, they wouldn't be safe.

And on the 2nd one, no, I don't think God is telling them what their shoes were to be made of. It's a picture of security. And this isn't one of God's commands either. It's one of the blessings to Israel.

84 Exodus 30:32 - Anoint none with special oil except Cohen Gadol (High Priest) and King.

I was following the guide of not using man-made rules, just going by what the bible said...

in your view, how does one decide if a Thou Shall or Shalt Not is a command or a blessing?

isn't all of Torah a blessing?

Deuteronomy 33 is Moses' blessing over the individual tribes, so it's not considered one of the "laws," even though it's part of the Torah. This kind of blessing is different than the blessings/rewards that come from obedience to the laws themselves.

not considered one of the "laws," by who?

does each Torah-reader get to decide for themselves which Thou Shalts are laws?
