The issue of burial is deeply rooted in the belief that their old body of flesh will be resurrected would naturally resist cremation, and as scriptures represent, the practice of burial was the predominate practice, at least among the Jewish by the references to the tombs. However, the issue of the resurrection was apparently debated before the time of Jesus or it at least appears as such considering the passage in Acts 23:8
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
Since the OT contains passage regarding the resurrection of the dead it would be difficult to argue that the Pharisees hadn't aready had a belief in the resurrection before the period of Jesus in the NT.
Personally, I consider that once a person dies, they awaken in a new body on the new earth, so how better to dispose of the corpse than to cremate.
But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.Matt 8:22
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 1 Cor 13:3
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. Rev 21:5
