They all did Ricke. Every Christian apostle and early church father understood and taught God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as three persons sharing the same essence as one God fulfilling different functional roles. Isn't it wonderful the scripture reveals who God is in all His fullness and person. It wasn't until the third century that someone began to use their best thinking over God's revelation and even came up with modalism and found themselves on the outside looking in as a result.

Here we go around the mountain again once more because Ricke doesn't get it.

David
You once again are perverting the Truth. No Apostle of Jesus in The first century Church ever taught or preached Trinity. Scriptures David give us Scriptures...I Am ready...

"How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will." Hebrews 2:3-4

Notice that God also bears witness after the Lord has spoken. Also notice how the Holy Spirit submits to the will of the Father.

Writer unknown, but the book made the grade.

Next up: Jude.

"But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life."

Author: Jude, probably not the apostle, but maybe.

That's all the human authors save one. Now don't you think that God would have put some clarification into the New Testament rather than leave all these references to three persons? I do.

The theology of the nature of the Godhead came about because of the preaching and teaching of the New Testament. If you approach scripture with faith but no presuppositions you would start by understanding the unity of the Godhead, then be puzzled by the relationship of Jesus to the Father, then settle on some sort of trinitarianism. That is what happened in the first century church and what would happen now.

thanks for this charisenexcelcis!

i write this to you directly in appreciation.

for me, your post takes the whole thing back to the naked core - no one can even begin to understand anything whatsoever unless they are first CALLED.

approaching the scriptures with faith does lead to a simple understanding of the GodHead.

would it be fair to say that we can not even approach the scriptures until we have been drawn to them?...

that, as Jesus said, for those who have BEEN BORN AGAIN OF THE SPIRIT it is like the wind - they don't know where it came from or where it is going.

i agree with your very clean and simple description.

it reminds me of what happened when i suddenly became aware that i had been drawn, or more precisely in my case, dragged to Calvary....i understood that a Holy and Righteous God Who must punish sin had provided the only means for my redemption, JESUS, my Saviour.

it was only AFTER receiving the gift of FAITH i was even able to READ the bible, let alone grow and learn to study.

thanks again Char. a reminder for me to remain settled in the simplicity of the faith i RECEIVED (not learned or earned, but received from Him Who loved me before the world began).

love zone.

John 12:32
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

For those who will listen to the Holy Spirit, all study and education leads them deeper. To those who will not listen to Him, all study and education is fruitless.
