What is sin?

Sin first began in the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit.

Why did God choose to have a tree in the garden that they were able to eat from, and knew it would lead them to sin?

Everyone sins - no one is perfect.
In each of our lives we have our own garden of Eden, our own tree.

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[d] of it you shall surely die.”

4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be for[f] your husband,
and he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.

Satan lied to Adam and Eve by adding ONE word - "You will NOT surely die"

How does Satan lie to you in your life?

Sin is:

1: Sin is transgression of the law, 1John 3:4
This sin does not apply to Christians as we're not under the law (Rom 8:2, Rom 10:4, Gal 3:25, Gal 5:18, 1Tim 1:9).
Whatever the law says, it says to those under it, Rom 3:19.

2: Unrighteousness is sin, 1John 5:17.
This sin does not apply to Christians as our faith is counted for righteousness, Rom 4:5.

3: Unbelief in Jesus is the sin the world is convicted of, John 16:9.
Christians do not commit this sin.

4: Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, Matt 12:31.
Christians do not commit this sin.

I believe the definition of sin can also be reworded in the following manner without contradicting scripture.

The actions, attitudes, thoughts, and words responsible for evil.

The basic meaning of sin is to miss the mark and as applied unto the nature and character of God means to fall way short on our part......It is interesting to ponder why God placed the tree in the in Garden and knowing that God knows everything...He knew that man would eat of the tree, sin and fall......To me it seems obvious that this was the plan from the beginning......

The spirit that God gives unto man returns unto God upon the death........me personally, I believe this grand experiment under the sun was brought about so as to give every spirit in God's kingdom a chance to choose between Satan's fallen Kingdom and the Kingdom of God.....EVEN the very Son of God had to be robed in flesh, walk the earth, choose who to serve, live, die and ascend back unto the Father.............

From beginning to end for every human being it comes down to choice....

Chose you this day whom you will serve.........!

From the earliest we can read in the Scriptures, sin seems to have a power of dominion over people. It desires to have control over people. Cain apparently "did not do well," which seems to be connected to the offering he brought, God "not looking favorably" upon it, and his countenance falling. If Cain "does not do well," then sin is crouching at the doorway to have him. This seems to be intimately connected to what it means to "do well" versus "not do well," which I believe is revealed throughout the rest of Scripture.

Abel became a shepherd of flocks while Cain became a worker of the ground. So it happened after some time that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to Adonai, while Abel—he also brought of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. Now Adonai looked favorably upon Abel and his offering, but upon Cain and his offering He did not look favorably. Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. Then Adonai said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, it will lift. But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the doorway. Its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Cain spoke to Abel his brother. While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. -- Gen. 4:2a-8 (TLV)

Someone once described sin as high treason against God. Pretty good analogy!

Any and all sin would separate us from God if it were not for Jesus.
Sin is anything God is not!

"Sin is the transgression of the law". Indeed we are no longer under the law, but that doesn't mean that we don't keep the law anymore.
Keeping the law shouldn't be confused with being under the law.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LAW
The law was like the alphabet, vowels and consonants of which we couldn't make sense out of it.
That alphabet was composed into sentences, phrases, clauses that brought us the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The law was like an X-ray machine. Could point out our disease, but couldn't cure us.
The Gospel both points out and provides the cure for our disease.
The law is spiritual therefore the carnal mind cannot obey it.

Sin is the missing of the mark, a failing to be what God intended man to be.
The tree in the garden was a test.
God is like a manufacturer. When a product is manufactured, it needs to be tested to get God's seal of approval.
When Adam was freshly made, God tested his IQ, brought all the animals to him.
Not God telling him what to call them, "but to see what he would call them"
When the woman was made, she was tested and horribly failed, and the man failed, and the whole human race was rejected, like an order, job getting rejected, failed God's quality control.

PLAN B
God's thoughts is higher than our thoughts, His ways is not man's ways.
God had Plan B ready even before Plan A could fail.
Adam in Plan A was going to fail the test, and being rejected. Christ in Plan B was going to Pass the Test and receiving God's seal of approval.
Whether its a Business, Church, Bible Study group we start, God have a Plan B ready for us, should Plan A fails.

THE MYSTERY OF SIN
Sin is powerful, turned the most intelligent beautiful cherub into something horrible.
Sin made Satan into what he is today therefore the power of sin should not be undermined.

MASTER, SERVANT RELATIONSHIP
Nowhere in Scripture do we read of Sin being the father of the sinners, but rather a master, servant relationship with man.

FATHER, CHILDREN RELATIONSHIP
Nowhere in Scripture do we read of Satan being the master of the sinner, but rather a father, child relationship with man.

WAGES OF SIN
Nowhere in Scripture do we read of the wages of Satan is death, but rather the wages of sin is death.
The devil himself, just like the sinner is going to be rewarded with the same payment in his packet, death.
Both father, children is working for the same slave master, sin.

5 LEVELS IN LIFE
1st LEVEL Elohimic Level, God's Level, the Most High Level in life.
2nd LEVEL Angelic Level, just below God
3rd LEVEL Adamic Level, just below the angels (Thou has made him a little lower than the angels)
4th LEVEL Satanic Level, Satan's Level below man
5th LEVEL Harmatanoic Level, Sin, the lowest level in life (Sin made the devil into what he is today)

He came down to our level when we couldn't get up to His. But there's a mystery, He became even lower than the lowest in life, He was made sin for us, also typified by a serpent Moses held up on a pole in the desert.

DCon is right. In the Hebrew, sin means missing the mark. So anything that misses the mark of God is sin.

Another definition is that sin is anything that separates us from God. That is why we do need to follow close to Christ, obey him and love God and others. Because those things don't keep us from God, but draw us closer.

Satan uses the tv novels here on Brazil a lot to convince people to sin, they "preach" that everything is allowed to do in our lives... since homossexuality, betrayal, corruption, killing etc... etc... etc... The next novel title is Babylon, one of the central stories is about to old homossexual ladies. It's getting worse each day.
