Paul had faith in God to bring His work to completion:

Phil 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

And Paul had the good sense to know that he had to run the race to the end. Contrast that with what I read the other day from one of the grace teachers who said that the race begins at the finish line.

Was Paul "racing" for salvation, or for rewards? Was his prize salvation, or rewards?

Salvation. The crown of righteousness is salvation.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

The crown of righteousness is not salvation, it is one of the rewards for living and working for God.

Salvation is a gift:
Rom 6:
23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Salvation is obtained by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not by works (Rom 10:9-10; Eph 2:8-9).

Rewards are earned, and can be lost.

That's your opinion. A very misinformed one IMO. But it's your life and you will have to live with the consequences.

Mat. 24:13 "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.
That is the error of reading one verse and thinking it speaks volumes.
Context! Is everything in good exegesis.

All of chapter 24 is to be understood in proper context so as to understand what verse 13 is telling us. In short, while we will encounter many false teachers that try to lead us from the truth, those who endure in trusting the promise of God at his word that they are in Christ and assured immortal life in him will find their trust was warranted. Because they are saved after life. Just as The Word promised in His word.
Jesus did the work for us on the cross. We need only faith to be saved. And no man shall take us from that promise.

Galatians 2:16 "Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified."

Galatians 2:21" I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

Galatians 2 Chapter 2
The apostle, in this chapter, continues the relation of his past life and conduct, which he had begun in the former; and, by some further instances of what had passed between him and the other apostles, makes it appear that he was not beholden to them either for his knowledge of the gospel or his authority as an apostle, as his adversaries would insinuate; but, on the contrary, that he was owned and approved even by them, as having an equal commission with them to this office. I. He particularly informs them of another journey which he took to Jerusalem many years after the former, and how he behaved himself at that time (v. 1-10). And, II. Gives them an account of another interview he had with the apostle Peter at Antioch, and how he was obliged to behave himself towards him there. From the subject-matter of that conversation, he proceeds to discourse on the great doctrine of justification by faith in Christ, without the works of the law, which it was the main design of this epistle to establish, and which he enlarges more upon in the two following chapters.

I am more than willing to do so.

And BTW, knowing the difference between salvation and rewards does not mean I'm not doing anything for God.

Did you read the scripture I provided to back up my "opinion"?

And here's a couple about losing rewards:
1 Cor 3:
11) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12) Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13) Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14) If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15) If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Even if a Christian's works are all burned up, he will still be saved.

2 John 1:
8) Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

As will you for your opinion. You can explain to God why you reject grace
