1 Corinthians 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Today the use of tongues are mostly incorrect as Paul defines its misuse to the church of Corinth. Today it is used as a sign of showing how great and spiritual the person is that manifests the attributes of this gift. If they are using it with no unbelievers around that can understand the message, they are nothing more than a person that's showing off. The gift still exists however. Use it right or not at all.

I agree that it is mostly used wrongly today. There is much less need for this gift now than there was centuries ago, although it is still a valid gift. After a woman I know told me I was basically 'half a Christian' because I didn't speak in tongues or have my own "prayer tongue" my husband and I did a study on the phenomenon and posted it online at Speaking in Tongues

Obviously, we found her allegations to be false. Many people like that outward manifestation today because it makes them think they are greater in the eyes of others because they are so sanctified as to have a 'gift of tongues'. And we all know what God says about that. Others are simply misled because they haven't truly STUDIED.

I know quite a few people who speak in tongues and only a few of them have ever given any impression that they do it to edify themselves. All of the others just do it to worship God. Sometimes the tongues are interpreted and confirmed (or sometimes not confirmed) by several parties. Divine discernment is needed. But most of the time, it's just people praising God and lifting high His name. I'm seen the gift abused, I've been wary of it, but I've also seen tongues used in a biblically-sound manner and have grown to accept it as something that many Christians have been gifted with, although I'm not one of them (I have other God-given gifts and that's okay).

There is more than one mode of tongues, and tongues are for everyone that is born of the spirit. The different modes are by gift of the spirit (1Corinthians), or by intercession (Romans), or upon first receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts). We begin with the book of Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
[8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
[9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
[10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

Tongues and the interpretation takes place within a gathering of believers, usually taking place in church. Being moved by the Holy Spirit, a person stands up, speaks in tongues and sits down. A second person then stands up, speaks in tongues and sits down, and so a third. Then comes the interpretation. This is all done in an orderly fashion. The message is for time and place, and is for the edification of that body of believers.

However, that is not the only mode of tongues, and thereby controversy through misunderstanding. Lets turn to the book of Romans:

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

This speaks of an intercessory mode of tongues. With this we make intercessory prayer, and have confidence that our prayers are in God’s will.

Intercessory tongues isn't a gift, but a mode or operation whereby the spirit moves. For example: Let's say that we walk into the Lord's house and we have a need that must be met. A saint begins to pray for us in tongues (as the Holy Ghost gives the utterance). This saint has never seen us before nor knows our need. But God knows. This is something on a personal level. This is something that meets a personal need.

The amazing thing about tongues, is that the Lord wants us to know it is available to everyone that has, or will have, the Holy Spirit as seen in the book of Acts. Which brings us to speaking in tongues as initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit the Bible way:

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
[2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
[3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Throughout the book of Acts, everyone that received the Holy spirit had received with speaking in tongues as the spirit gave the utterance. Now, within the controversy there are some quick to point out a few scriptures whereby it is simply not recorded either one way or the other. However, they cannot provide a single scripture that says someone failed to speak in tongues. We do have tons of scripture that folks did speak in tongues, but simply a non-statement does NOT mean that anyone has not spoken, it is simply not mentioned.

Here is a scriptural example:
This is an account of the exact same event. Only one account offers more information than the other. See if you can spot it:

Matthew 26:51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

You are correct, it was John that lists the name of the servant who's ear was smote off, AND lists the name of the person that had drew the sword. We have observed that the other scripture did not mention these facts, but where it is not mentioned does not mean that it did not happen.

Lets continue and find out how we can receive what God has offered to us:

Acts 2:12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
[13] Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
[14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
[15] For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
[16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
[18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
[38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
[39] For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

That is what happened on the birth day of the New Testament Church. That is God's plan for salvation, it has not altered, it remains the same.

If we are to obey the gospel, we would have to symbolize the death, burial, and resurrection. And, that is exactly what Peter said to do.

1. Death = Repent
2. Burial = water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins
3. Resurrection = Holy Spirit

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
[5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

I have spoken to people from around the world and find it amazing, those that do not speak in tongues, presume to be the foremost authority on the subject. Please don't let anyone tell you that you cannot receive something, that God himself, has waiting.

God bless!

"The passionate, sometimes rhythmic, language-like patter that pours forth from religious people who “speak in tongues” reflects a state of mental possession, many of them say. Now they have some neuroscience to back them up.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues and found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet, as were..."

I have heard horror stories about misused "tongues" and personally, it scares the daylights out of me to consider some babbling I can't understand myself and direct it toward my Almighty God in any way. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

That statement is totally opposed to this verse and doesn't match at all.

Two stories - one that validates the correct use of tongues and the other...well...like I said "fear of God is the beginning of wisdom."

There was once a girl who went to college and did not know God. She had taken Greek as one of her courses. The college professor instructed all that were in that class to give themselves a Greek name, in that all Greek names tell an attribute about oneself. The name she gave herself was “Anthos” meaning “flower”. During a hard time in her life, she had gone to church one Sunday, and during the service a man stood up and spoke in Greek. This girl understood, and the message straight from God came to her that said “flower I love you and want your heart”. Needless to say, she accepted Christ as her Savior.

Another story unfolds like this. A young man received a gift of tongues and was so excited about it, that he called his sister (who lived in Germany) knowing that she had a faith in God while in times past, he didn’t. He wanted to give her an example of this gift over the phone, and as he commenced, she screamed “STOP-STOP!” I can’t bear the awful things that you are saying about God! He was blaspheming God in the German tongue.

Yes my friend, always, because Gods word is our authority and the Bible says nothing about a language that is completely unknown to us.

Tongues was turned into a "heavely prayer language" by people who don't understand the Bible with respect to the gift of tongues.

Then he was not speaking in tongues by the Spirit of God - Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the holy Spirit. 1 Co. 12:3

if I had a dollar for every time I herd a urban legend about tongues I could retire . 1 cor 12. 13, 14 make it very Clear that Tongues and other Gifts are from the Holy Spirit and disturbed by the Holy Spirit as HE see the need for.

1 cor 12; 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant
So Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit tell the church about the gift of who? verse 4 : Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. "S"
:8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; "S"
:9
:10 etc...

no where in the bible does it ever say the Working of the Holy Spirit or the gifting of the Holy Spirit has stopped. But 1 cor 12. 13, and 14 speak of how they are to be used when to be used and in the Mode of Love when using them.

are there abuses done with the gifting from the Holy Spirit ? yep sure is preach is one Pastoring is another. is there abuses in the gifts of the Spirit yep that is why Paul sent this letter to combat the foolishness does that mean the gift are not for today absolutely Not. the Point should be and focused on these gifts come from the Holy Spirit and we are told not to be uneducated about them and we are told to desire the gifts to for the glory of God. all those this is a great opinionated doctrinal attack on the gift of the Holy Spirit that have no scriptural ref: to the gift being done away with. I too could provide unborn legend on tongues of how it to was used and people who walked in herd it and were blessed. But that still would not be what the Bible says about tongues would it? I thank God for all the gift of HIs Holy Spirit and I thank Him more for my salvation. Praise His Holy name which I will pray in the Spirit and I will pray with my understand too as the holy Spirit has enabled me to do so.

There is no tongues in the Pentecostal churches. If there were any real tongues, Pentecostals wouldn't accept the large quantity of tongues that is seen as false to anyone with any discernment. But, they have nothing real to compare with false tongues. Many Pentecostals are wonderful people and sincere believers, but their preference for emotional experiences leads them to be susceptible to many false doctrines and false teachers.

again Pentecostals do not change the gifting of what the Holy Spirit does as in 1 cor 12, 13, 14. but one thing if for sure the abbreviation you used for tongues is not found in the Bible. that being said if you are a Christian please provide the interpretation for BS?

Tongues was turned into a "heavenly prayer language" by people attempting to justify the use of gibberish that cannot be understood because it has no meaning.

thank you for your wonderful opinion but it is not biblical. the bible is very Clear that the Holy Spirit is the one in control of HIS gifting. Not what you say other have changed into or what you say it is. again you have not a biblical ref to prove your understanding of tongues. Please read 1 cor 12, 13, 14 in context God Bless you
