Thinking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and wondering about which would all believers have. Looked into it (research) and realized that there appears to be some debate as to how many gifts there are........ One Site says 7 (Catholic Church), another says 9......and......

The 7 Gifts listed are: Wisdom, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Understanding, Piety, Fear of the Lord.....their Source is Isaiah 11:2-3

The 9 Gifts listed are: the word of Wisdom, the word of Knowledge, Faith, the gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, divers kind of tongues, the interpretation of tongues.......the Source is 1 Corinthians 12:8,9,10

SIDEBAR:

[i also see that the "fruits" and the "gifts" of the Holy Spirit differ, and that some consider the "fruits" to be more important than the "gifts." But, that is for another Thread mayhaps.........]

Now is where it gets confusing/multiplied, because certain Scriptures identify certain gifts, and, when you add them all up, there is more than 9!

(excerpt)

nswer: There are actually three biblical lists of the “gifts of the Spirit,” also known as spiritual gifts. The three main passages describing the spiritual gifts are Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:4–11; and 1 Corinthians 12:28. We could also include Ephesians 4:11, but that is a list of offices within the church, not spiritual gifts, per se. The spiritual gifts identified in Romans 12 are prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, and mercy. The list in 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 includes the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues. The list in 1 Corinthians 12:28 includes healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. A brief description of each gift follows:

Miraculous Powers

If we accept these as the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, how many would you think all believers would/should have?

My thoughts are:

Serving, Encouraging, Giving, Mercy, Faith, Helps

We should all be able to SERVE the Church in some capacity, and to SERVE the people around us (world) as well. We should all be able to ENCOURAGE fellow believers, our family, and co-workers. We should all be able to GIVE something.......time, talents, finances. We should all show MERCY to fellow believers and to the lost. We should all have some degree of FAITH, and striving to have our FAITH grow. We should all have HELPS, but, now that I look at it, possibly HELPS and SERVING one in the same............so, maybe we need to edit the List to 15? Does anyone see a difference between HELPS and SERVING?

Anyway, how many of these gifts do you think all believers would/should have?

God bless

A Prophetic word unto you... The Gift that all BELIEVERS have been given, is the FREE WILL TO CHOOSE WHO YOU WILL SERVE, either the GOD of this WORLD through his son, or YOUR CREATOR, in whom we call ABBA, which means FATHER through his SON, who I AM, saith YAHOSHUA, who is the Christ meaning the ANOINTED ONE, unto YOU, who are of the GENTILE NATIONS/NATIONALITIES of the WORLD, called MANKIND, and unto the ANCESTORS of the JEWS, that did not RECEIVE ME, when I CAME unto them, I AM, MESSIAH, but who I AM NOT is JESUS/YESHUA, in whom they had REPLACED MY SAVING NAME WITH, throughout My FATHER’S Holy Scribes/Scriptures, when I LEFT YOUR WORLD AGE. Which was also when your FREE WILL TEST, had BEGUN, have you not READ? Saith YAHOSHUA, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. YOSHUA/OSHUA/Joshua 24:13-15 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat. Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Now I have come unto you to tell you that your Free will test is almost come to and END, and you are not PASSING your TEST, and as a loving TEACHER, that I AM, I have sent not only My Prophetess unto you, but also My BRIDE, for she knows her HUSBANDS NAME, DO YOU, I ASK? Saith YAHOSHUA, who is Christ unto YOU, who are of the GENTILE NATIONS/NATIONALITIES of the WORLD called MANKIND, and unto the JEWS, I AM, MESSIAH, but who I AM NOT is JESUS/YESHUA, in whom they had REPLACED MY SAVING NAME WITH, throughout My FATHER’S Holy Scribes/Scriptures, when I LEFT YOUR WORLD AGE. Just as they had done unto YOU. When the “ADDED” the Title of GOD, then DECEIVED this WORLD into WORSHIPING A “GOD” through the Title of GOD, INSTEAD OF YOUR CREATOR, in whom we call ABBA, and not GOD, but ABBA, which means FATHER, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures... Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, the FATHER hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “ABBA", Father. Mark 14:36 And he said, “ABBA", Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. Roman 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “ABBA", Father.

I warned you about this when I told John the PUNISHMENT that I would bring unto those who had done this to you, have you not READ? Saith YAHOSHUA, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures... Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, the FATHER shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, the FATHER shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

And this is what I AM sending My BRIDE to TESTIFY of these things to the CHURCHES, BUT ARE YOU LISTENING??? This is why I SAID NOT TO TRUST IN MAN, because I WAS SENDING A WOMAN, who is My BRIDE to prepare My true Church in whom I will come to MARRY, Saith YAHOSHUA, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. Revelation 22:16-17 I YAHOSHUA HAVE SENT MINE “ANGEL", [which means a messenger] TO TESTIFY UNTO YOU THESE THINGS IN THE “CHURCHES”. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. AND THE “SPIRIT”, [who I AM, saith YAHOSHUA] and the “BRIDE” [who she is, who is speaking to you now] SAY COME. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

And I will also send My TWO WITNESSES unto ISRAEL, who will be Moses and ENOCH, to TESTIFY of what My BRIDE is SAYING WHO I AM, saith YAHOSHUA, who is Christ unto the GENTILE NATIONS/NATIONALITIES and unto the JEWS, I AM, MESSIAH, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. Jude 1:9-10 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.Jude 1:14-17 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are unfatherly among them of all their unfatherly deeds which they have unfatherly committed, and of all their hard speeches which unfatherly sinners have spoken against him.

And if you have RECEIVE what My Bride is saying Elais has come unto you ALREADY, saith YAHOSHUA, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. Matthew 17:11-12 And YAHOSHUA answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

I appreciate the thought you've put into this subject. I don't agree with your list of gifts that all believers have though.

Personally, I don't have the "gift" of encouragement, that I'm aware. I'll notice what is wrong or needing improvement long before I notice what is right. I know some people are generous givers while others aren't. Some see a need and rise to help, others are annoyingly oblivious. Some believe for great things, others struggle with worry and doubt.

Paul's rhetorical questions in 1 Corinthians 12 make it clear that not all believers have a particular gift (of the nine listed there). There are some gifts that all believers have: life in Christ Jesus, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the promise of the resurrection. :)

Now is where it gets confusing/multiplied, because certain Scriptures identify certain gifts, and, when you add them all up, there is more than 9!
Of course there are more than 9. Twenty would be closer to the total. And if you wish to focus on the ones that are for believers today, leave out the sign gifts and those associated with divine revelations.

That still leaves plenty. And don't waste time on Catholic sites for answers. You have the Bible.

Great list .

I would say as many as the Spirit works in a person to both will and do his good pleasure dividing to every man individually as he wills.

He makes it possible when we do not harden our hearts. In that way every person has the potential to be moved by his loving will.

Some that think for instance think they do not have the gift of encouragement. They might be used as a good encouragement to another.

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man "severally" as he will.1 Corinthians 12:11

I kinda encouraged folks to disagree, sooooooooo, that's cool! I was looking for what gifts they believed all believers have/should have...... Those highlighted, are they gifts or fruits?

We should all be able to GIVE something.......time, talents, finances. We should all show MERCY to fellow believers and to the lost. We should all have some degree of FAITH, and striving to have our FAITH grow. We should all have HELPS, but, now that I look at it, possibly HELPS and SERVING one in the same............so, maybe we need to edit the List to 15? Does anyone see a difference between HELPS and SERVING?

Anyway, how many of these gifts do you think all believers would/should have?

God bless

I don't agree with your definition of service at all. I think it was called "helps" in the KJV, which is closer to the truth If I have the gift of preaching, for example, technically, according to your definition means it is service. But, it is not helps or service, but the gift of exhortation, and preaching is covered that way.

Service or helps is more doing the behind the scenes things that need to be done, but no one sees. Like making coffee before a service, or cleaning up a room in the church, because it needs to be done.

My husband has this gift. When we renovated our church, he was there with a few other guys and one woman, every day for months, donating their labour and expertise, saving money for the church, because they didn't have to hire trades people. My husband helped with drywalling. He would do an hour round trip, to town, just to do 10 minutes of puttying, so it would be ready the next day. I don't think hardly anyone knew what they were doing, until at the grand opening of the new kitchen, my husband and another man were introduced for their work, and the time they put in. And both of them were so happy doing the job, but didn't want anyone to know. Yes, they were helping the church, but not in an outward way.

I don't have the gift of helps, and now that I am so disabled, I have given up even pretending! lol He also has the gift of giving, which I don't have either. I guess that we both compliment each other in the gifts, making up for each other's weak areas of gifting.

If I may, it is been my experience that gifts are whatever our Hevenly Father decides the vessel is to be used for. Each miracle is a different gift..

If I come off as boasting it is of the Father not of me. Once, according to others witnessing to me, and the Holy Spirit confirming it, while I was sleeping in the Holy Spirit, I was seen carrying my blue Bible (Oxford study Bible) and speaking of the Holy Spirit while walking up a mountain, Long's Peak to be exact.

Of the thirty to forty people who saw me was an aquaintance of mine to whom I had been witnessing for some time. He and his wife had been separated but afte a timethey came back together. At any rate, all of the people including my frined has comped out over night on the way to th peack due to a sudden rain storm. My friend asked people if they had seen a person with "yellow" hair, and they al said eys going up the mountain with a blud book. He was talking about God and the Holy Spirit.

When my friend told me, I asked when it happened, and when he told me, I recalled i WAS IN MY SLEEPING BAG sleeping and feeling as though I was being bathed in the Holy Spirit.

That was a gift from above, for I had not power to "do" this, but because of the very strong Presence of Gos as I slept I believed my friend's story. Oh, when the people conituned up the mountain, they did not see that peron with the blud book, and at the top there e was no way to go down the mountain other than a sherr drop down a cliiff.

There have been other gifts that perhaps others would not accept as gifts of teh Holy Spirit, but anything done through me was always of God, never me, just me following orders with no words.

I thought I had defined service/helps that way...........hmm, will have to look to see.

Also, when typing the OP, I wondered why the Article did not include Evangelists and Preachers in the gifts of the Spirit.............figured they classified them in some way...... :)

Lemme see if it was my definition, or the definition used in the Article.......

I said:

Isn't that pretty much what you said?

I think you do not give yourself enough credit when it comes to giving........You give time do you not? That counts......you give love and support to those in need, but, that might fall under encouragement........shoot, there's lots of ways one can give.......betcha you give more than you GIVE yourself credit for. :)

I kinda encouraged folks to disagree, sooooooooo, that's cool! I was looking for what gifts they believed all believers have/should have...... Those highlighted, are they gifts or fruits?
I'd call them gifts, not fruit. Fruit are listed in Galatians 5... love, joy, peace, etc. The three you highlighted aren't "borne" by believers; they are received. :)

Those highlighted, are they gifts or fruits?
The spiritual gifts must not be confused with the fruits of the Spirit. So here are the twelve gifts that are still applicable to Christians (excluding the sign gifts, the gifts connected to divine revelation, and apostles and prophets):

1 COR 12
1 The word of wisdom
2. The word of knowledge
3. Faith (extraordinary faith)
4. Teachers (also in Ephesians 4)
5. Helps
6. Governments (ruling as per Romans 12)

1 COR 13
7. Agape love

ROMANS 12
8. Ministry (probably as applicable to the ministry of the Word, secondarily Christian service in general)
9. Exhortation (as applicable to the ministry of the Word)
10. Giving (as applicable to Christian giving or liberality)

EPHESIANS 4
11. Evangelists
12. Pastors

Every believer has the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is through the ministry of the Holy Spirit that the other gifts are brought to fruition. How many we have is directly related to how much we submit ourselves to Gods leading.

The Holy Spirit is how we receive eternal life and a heart to serve and worship God.

1 Thessalonians 5:11) Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

......and, BTW Dino, I have been reading comments from you since you joined, and your words have encouraged me on several occasions...... as have the words of my Brother Posthuman and garee........ just saying
Great verse .Reminded me of the faith of Christ that comes from hearing God as that which mutual works in us to teach and guide, as it (faith)works to comforts both or many .

It would seem two are needed to establish one spiritual gift. One used to prophecy and the other gift the interpterion to both. Both mutually blessed by Christ who works to both will and do His good pleasure in all

For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
That is, that I may be "comforted together" with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.Roman1:11-12

Together with not.... separate from.

Eternal faith (Christ's) is the gift that mutually works in us all.

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

On what basis do you exclude the others (added in strikethrough bold text)?

Had you read my post properly, you would haven noted that ministry (service), teaching (teachers) and leadership (ruling) were not excluded but connected to those already listed. And mercy would be an expression of agape love as described in 1 Cor 13 (which is listed).

As to the others, they were limited to the Apostolic Age. Modern tongues are not the same as Bible tongues. As for healing, James has given us the passage on the prayer of faith.

Please explain the ‘why’ for these three assertions, and how it is demonstrated that the gifts are no longer given.
