I love to underline and make notes in the margins. Because of that, my kids sort of fight over who gets the old bible (with notes and underlined parts) when I get a new one. It will be passed down in generations.

And if not my kids, I have a whole group of women that I've taught that are always asking me if they can have my "written in" old bibles. And I am always getting a new bible because of the SMELL of leather ones. Ah!

So, I really don't have the problem - it pays to have a lot of kids and friends I guess.
Doing that has served (me) to check how my understanding (or misunderstandings) have evolved.

Thanks for that reminder, Joy

My family had a lot of problems when one of my ancestors did that. He was friends with Joseph Smith, before Joe decided to go out west. So, when Joe left, he gave my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather the very first version of his new-and-improved Bible. It got past down through the generations, but occasionally someone from the Mormons would try to steal it. (Apparently, Joseph Smith's "revelations" from God changed through the years, so it's not good to have proof of that.) Got to be a hassle after a while, so my great grandfather donated it to a library. Now the library has it in a safe, and, on occasion, has break ins too.

If you're going to pass down an old Bible, make sure it's a real Bible and don't get famous. lol

I made the mistake of telling one of our salespeople (for a factory I worked for) from Utah that story. Apparently, I shocked her and she wouldn't believe me. I'm thinking that church doesn't like to tell people Joe changed his... whoops, I mean god change his revelation for Joe.
Haha, I worked with a couple JWS and they had kind of the same thing going on. When I discussed with them I used a copy of one of their "bibles" to "prove" things too them. My copy was a bit older and they refused to read mine as they had changed some things in their "new" copies.

exactly WHAT VERSIONS do JWS use? There are so many "versions" I really don't know which are "sect" bibles anymore and am wondering please?

As has been shared already, it is just a book and is only temporary because the Spirit of God is what teaches us, not a book. That being said, if it were in pretty bad shape,

I would have no problem with someone simply throwing it away.

My grandson asked me this question today. I had no answer for it.
Just tell him that it is not the paper, binding, and ink that are "sacred" or "holy." It is the Word of God that is holy, not the material it is printed on. Throwing away a Bible would have to be the absolute last resort, at least in my opinion. Many old Bibles, if rebound, would be "as good as new" and could then continue to be used or given to someone else to use. Even an old/tattered Bible, given to someone who does not have a Bible, can be a tremendous blessing.

And by the way, a well-worn Bible is a sure sign that the owner is not.

(Pretty sure I'm not the first one that said that on this thread, but not sure since I didn't bother to read the in-between posts. The line is, after all, an oldie but a goodie.)

should we think that maybe it would be a 'sweet-smelling savor' to The Saviour,
if it was burned metaphorically, on the Altar?

Yes sir! A heavy piece of leather from Tandy leather and some Dap Weldwood original Contact Cement put mine in fine shape for several more years. I like it better now than before.

I hate breaking in a new Bible. With an old Bible I know exactly where on the page a particular verse is.

They use a translation called "The New World" translation. You can only get it from one of the kingdom halls and only after you have been there a couple times and after they "question" you on their messed up beliefs. I happened to find mine at a half price book store. I wanted to be able to understand where they get their beliefs from. It for sure is not one we can use as a study guide as they change certain passages to their own belief. For example they do not believe Jesus is God but a creation of God. They believe Jesus is God's son in a human sense as son. But every so often they change their translation to conform to their belief. They used to use the American Standard but seeing how it proves the divinity of Jesus they stopped using it. Actually you can prove the divinity of Christ in their NWT but they will still deny it.

Those times I see Jews holding or kissing the Torah... I also have thought like you!

Topic to read? Someone wrote this: "[h=1]Torah for Women at the Kotel[/h] Women all over the world have access to Torah scrolls. It is only at the Kotel in Jerusalem that women are forbidden from holding the Torah, kissing the Torah and reading from the Torah."

Conversely?

sometimes people have a beautiful bible where everyone that comes by can see it but they never read that bible and BTW don't dare putting your coffee cup on it.

Just a self reminder:

I´m not afraid to say that many of us have made the Bible something bigger than the ONE who inspired men to write it down..." A. T.

I'm a huge fan of the Torah scrolls (our church has a very old and special one), but I'm not a fan of elevating it as anything more than a very special and important symbol. It definitely shouldn't be elevated to the point of worshiping it.

Agreed with you, my brother!

The ONE we need to worship is GOD, and He is SPIRIT.

Amen... on the hate breaking a new one in. lol

My favorite -- my third out of four -- had to be put on the shelf when the layers of masking tape simply didn't work any more, and Romans was falling out. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why an OT book (I think it was a minor prophet book, but it's been so long since I looked at it to remember) was falling out too. Then I learned the pages are really one sheet for four pages sewn in, and not entirely connected to the same books. Once the pages start going, there is no amount of glue (or masking tape) that helps. :(

All the NWs I've seen were in boxes of books at flea markets. They aren't that hard to find, if you're into cheap shopping. lol

Brilliant! One of the reasons I gave up reading printed versions is because I'm not near a desk. I have a table next to me, but it's for my soda, glasses, and thingamajigs I need often enough not to want to find them in a drawer all the time. But I have no place to put a book if I'm trying to take notes too. (My Bible is E-Sword, so my notes are done on the computer now, in assorted ways.) So, that's just brilliant! I'd like that for more than a Bible. :D

Donate them to Goodwill Industries, the Salvation Army, etc... which all started as non-profit Christian ministry organizations and are run as such today. They have a procedure for retiring old bibles.

The same way you dispose of any other worn out book. There is nothing magical or sacred about leather, paper, and inked letters put into certain orders to form words. It is the meaning of God's words that is sacred- not the physical book containing them. So as long as you have resource to many more copies of it, and as long as you don't destroy it as a symbol of disrespect- like evil men who burn the American flag in the streets, it's ok. It's actually against the law to fly an American flag that is badly worn and torn, so what do you do? You throw it away and replace it with a new one. But personally I think a worn bible is the sign that someone's been using it- which is a very good thing. But if you have to break into a new bible you shouldn't feel guilty about throwing the old one away, just the opposite- "I've used this bible so much that I need a new one!" Awesome!
