BELIEVERS WHO DIE GO DIRECTLY TO HEAVEN
Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. (2 Cor 5:6-9)
a. What did Paul mean by "absent from the Lord?" He meant absent from the physical presence of Christ who is in Heaven.
b. What did Paul mean by "absent from the body?" He meant that the soul and spirit were separated from the body at death.
c. What did Paul mean by "present with the Lord?" He meant that the soul and spirit would be present in Heaven with the Lord (who is also in Heaven). Example: Stephen when he died went directly to Heaven.
ACTS 7 & 8: THE MATRYDOM OF STEPHEN
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.
59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep [died].
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.
At the Resurrection/Rapture (one event) the souls and spirits of those who died in Christ will be united with their resurrected, immortal, glorified bodies. And those who are alive at that time will be transformed and also receive glorified bodies (1 Cor 15). And all these saints will return to Heaven with Christ for the Marriage of the Lamb.
The reason for the Judgment Seat of Christ is that the works of believers will be judged, and rewards will be given to those whose works are found to be worthy.
