I believe the error is (and I am only going by what you have written here) you have never truly given your life to God. You have never truly accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. You continue to rely on your own understanding of Scripture, and Gods salvation plan. You will never be able to fully understand Scripture until you surrender your whole body, mind and spirit to God, ask Christ into your life as Lord and Savior, receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, WHO will impart "understanding of all things" to you.
The only thing that stops you from being a Christian is your own disbelief. Just as disbelief stops all who are not Christians from being so. There are only Christians and non Christians. True Christian is not a category in the equation. Either you are, or you are not.
I have to wonder, I pray you are, if you are "truly" seeking to become a Christian? All one has to do is "BELIEVE." Surrender their lives to God, and accept Jesus into their lives as Lord and Savior.
You may need to find a Church, a Pastor, or one or more Christians to join with you in prayer, as you seek to become a believer.
God bless you in your effort if it is sincere, and I will pray you "truly" seek Him. For those that "truly" seek Him, WILL find Him.
Deuteronomy 4:29
Proverbs 8:17
Jeremiah 29:12-14
Matthew 7:7,8
Lamentations 3:25
Isaiah 55:6,7
Psalms 119:10
Matthew 6:33
Hebrews 11:6
James 4:8
Psalms 119:2
If you read these, and "truly" believe, you will find God, for He will find you.
